@@RobinL-x6j I use very basic floor linoleum, which you can buy in many stores that sell this type of product. Look for stores that sell carpets in your country. The best linoleum is usually the cheapest and most basic - without any patterns. Flat basic stuff. I'm also using very basic oil-based ink for offset printing. Very often used by big printhouses for printing all kind of newspapers, advertising... stuff like that. There is a lot of brands and names - depending on the country. Look for oil-based offset ink. Or there are also brands who make the inks dedicated for artistic printmaking, but I haven't use them yet. I'm using Pfeil carving tools and I'm printing on Fabriano / Ferdigoni papers. But there is a lot of brands who produce a great quality paper. Look for "art papers for printmaking". ...that's it. Linoleum and inks are depending on the country - different countries may have different brands. You can find basic linoleum in some art stores, which - like me, buy the whole big roll and cut them into smaller pieces. A carpet store may not want to sell you a small piece, so you'll have to buy a roll. But they may have some offcuts in the back of the store that they could give you, even for free. Just ask.

Two questions: 1. How do you take impressions of your art on the linoleum surface? I see there's pink background and black foreground (0:23). Can you please explain? 2. Where can I buy the big thick fat roller that you are using (8:00)? Thanks in advance.

@@penmuni3833 1) You can transfer your design onto linoleum by using white spirit. Scan your drawing and print it on a regular laser office printer. Then, put it on the linoleum (print side down) and rub it in with a solvent. Don't use too much because you'll blur the whole thing. That's it. Later I like to draw on that transfer to make the whole thing more solid and clear visible. You can watch hiw I'm doing this in my latest video "The last night of summer". There are also other methods, but I'm using this one. Type "drawing transfer / linocut" on KZbin and you'll see other creators doing it their way. 2) The rollers I use were made by Wojciech Zawadzki, who have his workshop in Poland. He builds printing presses and all kind of equipment for printmakets. You can find him in internet, type: "Wojciech Zawadzki prasy graficzne" or "printing press". He have also English language website and I know he is sending his stuff allover the Europe. Don't know if he sends to US. You can ask him by email. I hope that helps

@penmuni3833 Sorry to hear that. As you probably noticed, I live in Poland and the names of our solvents may vary. I use a solvent called "Nitro" for transfers and it is a solvent for nitrocellulose lacquers and paints (that's why it's named Nitro). I know that some artists in English called it "white spirit" - that's why I gave you that name, but if that name is wrong, you have to find out yourself. Go to a paint and varnish store - I'm talking about paints and varnishes used in construction, not artistic ones - and ask someone there. While writing this I also thought that you could try a nail polish remover. But now I'm just shooting blindly off the top of my head - so I'm not sure about that. You can also visit my Instagram ( thrashead_originals) and watch the short video I posted May 25th 2024. I'm showing there my transfer process and I used nitrocellulose solvent. You know, different countries can use different names, but I believe that the stuff we have the same. If you will still have a trouble, maybe also try other techniques from other printmakers. I know that some people are using glue for transfer. I never tried, but it seems to work as well. Best of luck and keep trying.

In the second one - "The Leading Lights" I tried to do it better, but there are still a few things to improve. I'm slowly collecting material for my third film and I'll try to do some things better. Your care and precision is tops. Superb work! I hope you are able to make lots of these videos. I'm hooked! Really like the meditative music as well. @Thrashead-ns7iw
@Thrashead-ns7iw 11 ай бұрын
Thank you Craig. Exactly, as you noticed - before I started drawing with pens, the illustration had been transferred to linoleum. I used white spirit for this and the drawing itself was originally made on paper. Then I scanned it to my computer, enlarged it, printed it on four sheets of paper (standard office size), and then transferred it to linoleum using white spirit. Unfortunately, during the transfer it happens that I lose a lot of details, some lines get blurry... so I like to correct the whole thing before I start cutting it out. Of course, drawing on linoleum is, in a sense, duplicating my work - I do the same thing twice, but my linocut is strongly based on my drawing and I don't want to make any mistakes while carving. That's why I prefer to spend two extra days on correcting the whole thing - maybe I'll add some lines, maybe I'll change something slightly, but when I pick up the chisels, I want to be sure that all the lines are precisely marked and I won't make any mistakes. If the transfer you make is error-free, all lines will be fine - there will be no need to draw a second time.

@@Thrashead-ns7iw Thanks for additional information! I'm hoping to a lot of block printing soon and am trying to learn as many processes as I can. I was an art major in the mid 80s and everything was manual then. However, I'm now quite habituated to computers and I could go full manual again but there's a part of me resisting. So I keep looking for a way. My drawings are on an iPad now. I've seen a few variations of the print out transfer and it seems to never work 100 percent plus limitation of paper sizes (tho can tile like you did on this one). So I've thought about video projection tho the resolution isn't great... perhaps 4k projection? I've wondered if there's a printer that could print directly on the lino. But at some point it could just be a digital print and one of the things I like about block printing is the physicality of it. I guess I'm tryin to mostly limit the manual processes to drawing (once), cutting and printing. Thanks again!

@@craigduddles5650 To be honest, I'm not against digital art in any form. Computer is a tool, exactly like pen or brush. Plus I've worked as a corporate graphic designer since 2007 and till this day I do some sketches / concepts digitally. I've decidad to start with lino because I am a big fan of old-school - a classic designs and techniques. It wouldn’t be a problem for me to scan my drawing, add a few textures - dirty paper, some misprinting effect, and the final effect would be very similar. But "very similar" doesn't mean "the same". I can appreciate all kind of digital art: 3D modeling, amazing digital paintings, vector art... but I believe that there is still a lot of room for old-school classic techniques. About transfering drawing to big scale lino... I am working with A2 and B2 formats, so they are more or less 4 x office format. If I would need to do a bigger scalle... hmmm... like you said, video projector may work, or maybe I would try to print the whole thing on office printer and then tape the whole thing together. Or skip the transfering and just start drawing dirrectly on the lino? But the last method is a bit sketchy because drawing need to be done in mirror reflection, so that may be an issue.

Thank you for those nice words. I'm glad you like it. So... Yes, I'm using Pfeils and for fine lines I'm using micro U-shape 0,05 mm and V-shape 1 mm. Basicly you can achieve the same results using one of these two. I think the U-shape is a bit more easy to sharp / polish than the V. A few years ago at my beginings I had a little problems with V and I totally damaged two of them during sharpening. So if you can buy only one - I would suggest the "U 0,05".But if you can buy both... then you can test them both and pick your fav one. All the best and good luck with your prints. PS: don't use any stones for sharpening those micro tools. Use leather. It is better and more safe for the tool - but you need to use it a bit often during the day than if you would use the stone.

Thank you for nice comment.I appreciate it. So... combining linocut with watercolors is a quite popular method. There is only one condition - you must use oil ink. Oil does not react with water, so if you start painting with watercolor over the print - as I did, the ink will remain black as it was and the watercolor will only cover the white paper. Would it be possible to put the watercolor first and then print on the top of that? I think so. I sometimes soak the paper before printing, so it doesn't really matter whether the water is clean or contains watercolor. I've never tried it... but I think it would work.

PS: Quick warrning. Because of the montage of this video it may look like I'm painting just right after I printed that. Of course I let it dry first. Thanks for kind comment - I really appreciat it. The fact that I did this print in winter is pure coincidence. I'm constantly drawing something and carving lino - it just so happened that "Psycho" came out in the winter period. Also, this video is my first attempt at filming and video editing and I'm sure I made some mistakes with my camera settings: ISO or "f" - this also affects the image quality and in some shots the video is a bit too dark.
