I just switched bk to a climer its easier faster an in my case lighter then a hang on plus sticks unless your spending 1000 bucks
@TheWaterHopperАй бұрын
Yea I can definitely see that. I found that the main reason I prefer the hang on is the fact that I can setup my cameras and bow and everything. Then climb back down to get in my warm clothes. Or if I hang it in the morning I can come back to it ready to go for the afternoon. I also really like that I can climb any tree. Most of the areas I have started hunting lately don't have straight chute trees. Only a hang on works in there. I'll say this though. Nothing beats the comfort of a climber without a doubt. Also a larger standing platform works great.
@NastyN8thegreat2Ай бұрын
@TheWaterHopper makes sence I use the hang on in Marsh swamp area everywhere else in my area is pretty much hardwood lots of pines which have branches up high so I'm able to use the climber fairly easy both have there perks happy hunting this season

My husband shot a nice buck mid October bow hunting. We tracked it for 2 days with a dog and thought the deer was long gone. 2 weeks later one of the landowners sent trail cam video of the buck. He was limping bad. Opening day gun season the neighbors best friend shot him at 7:30 am. only 150 yds from where my husband shot him. The friend said there wasn't much meat on him and the loins were small. He didn't think it would have survived the winter.

That one buck as you were packing up after the women went through was a real nice 9 or 10 point, assuming he had brow tines. Surprised his antlers were so white, stuck out like a sore thumb going through the woods.
@TheWaterHopper8 ай бұрын
He did indeed have brow tines. Definitely a huge buck. Funniest thing. At the time I thought he was like a skinny 8 or something like that. Boy was I wrong. I guess I should have stayed in the tree that day.
@Diffidentone8 ай бұрын
@@TheWaterHopper I probably would have tried to guess where he was going and tried to head him off and wait in ambush. I've done that successfully a couple times in the past after I've jumped deer but that was with a gun so a bit easier as you do not have to guess within 30 yards and can be off by 50 or 100 yards further. Kind of like doing an accidental drive for yourself.
@TheWaterHopper8 ай бұрын
@Diffidentone right. In retrospect I should have pursued him. He clearly wanted to stay in the area since he came in twice. I was just so annoyed with the women and having to carry the stand up that hill I was just over it. In the future I need to nut up. Hide the stand somewhere and try a stalk
@Diffidentone8 ай бұрын
Yea, sucks but it happens to every hunter. I looked at that footage a lot as well frame by frame and hard to tell where you hit. There was a "fur" spot like high neck I saw appear and then a "fur" spot in the gut area and then kind of looks like a splot of red back by the hind leg as you said, was that just flying blood or a spot on the fur or a kicked up leaf, impossible to say. One thing is for sure that deer had super long hair as it was moving all over the place as it whirled and ran, made everywhere look like a hit spot.
@TheWaterHopper8 ай бұрын
Guess I just had my day sooner than most folks. But I've learned from it for sure. And won't be taking a quartered to shot again for a long long time. So hard to say where it hit with the gopro footage.
@Diffidentone8 ай бұрын
If you could have stopped the doe and he would have been close behind you may have had a chance but them being so far apart that buck was focused on one thing and one thing only. He more than likely never even heard you with his tunnel vision. So close but no cigar on this one. 😁 I see I have 2 more to watch yet so it looks like it gets good from the little sneak peeks you've been giving.
@TheWaterHopper8 ай бұрын
Yea man it was a rough one indeed. In retrospect I should have tried to stop the doe. And I also should not have tried to stop him as early as I did. Maybe louder but not until I jad a good shot angle. Hindsight 2020 I imagine.

Man. It's solid advice for sure. I struggle with that every time I go out. The desire to film vs. Just get after it. I've been toying with the thought of just doing all gopro when I go ground. Always good to at least see something, gives you confidence in your judgement on where to set up. I was just thinking and I'd say end of Oct. beginning of Nov. mornings are always the best time to see bucks. Always see far more deer in the morning during those 3 or 3 1/2 weeks around that time. Any other part of the season I'd say far more deer in the evenings. Looks like this series of videos are going to be very action packed, already off to a good start.

Looks like forgetting the gear affected this hunt and set the tone for this hunt. Nothing wrong with ground bow hunting, I'm 50/50 in the last 2 years. 2 years ago got my doe at 8 yards from the ground in the snow standing against a tree when it was -47 wind chills. Last year got my doe from a ladderstand along a field edge, both of those were public land late season deer, last couple days of the season. Looking forward to the coming videos.
@TheWaterHopper8 ай бұрын
Sounds words of advice. Is it tough getting a ladder stand into public? What state do you hunt?
@Diffidentone8 ай бұрын
@TheWaterHopper Well I used to carry it all put together over my shoulders and it was not too bad as long as it was not too thick of brush. Have to go in way early though as it is kind of noisy walking in with that. If there is 2 guys or one awkwardly someone could take the ladder part apart as most use the fast clips to hold the ladder together and then carry it in in sections. One of the hardest parts is you need to scout a tree out ahead of time as for putting up and also just getting set up branches can be a big hindrance as you need to walk the ladder up the tree of course. Some of the newer ladder stands you can lock/clamp it to the tree from the ground so that makes setup safer and faster for one person to climb up and put the extra ratchet strap on. It's definitely not a convenient setup in Wisconsin here because in the southern part of the state we need to take our treestands out of public land ever night. You can set them up in the morning and leave them all day but can't stay out over night. I just liked the solid feel under my feet the ladder stand gives me being a bigger guy at close to 270 without my gear. I have only been out a few times and ground hunted so far this year as my back and hips have been giving me trouble.
@TheWaterHopper8 ай бұрын
Yea I hear you on wanting the solid setup. I really like my current system. Same for us we can't leave stands overnight. So it's a lot of work especially with all of my camera gear. Setup can take up to an hour from the base of the tree to.totally settled at the top. Southern Wisconsin huh? I'm originally from Kenosha.
@Diffidentone8 ай бұрын
@@TheWaterHopper I hear you on the long setup, takes me an hour to put up a portable or saddle platform and I do not have all that camera gear just a tactacam on my bow. Just north of there, southern Milwaukee county. I did hunt a few times years ago at New Munster which if I am correct is the only public land in Kenosha county.
