So it does come with a handle on the tube? In some online shops it seems to and others not. I would imagine it would be an awkward carry if it had no handle, especially if wet with dew

So darn glad I watched this, I was going mental looking for that screw holding the viewfinder🤔. Just bought the 6" from FLO and thought it odd there was one screw but 2 screw holes. Your video helped immensely so I stopped my frantic search. But, how hard is it to clean the mirror? I looked into the tube and saw smearing around the edges.

Pretty cool gadget, but not for me. You are playing with your phone more than anything. But attaching the phone to the scope would be much better so it's right there. 👍 To me, my old Sky Commander DSC with encoders is much easier to use, and without losing your night vision. For the gadget junkies it might be the best thing since sliced bread. 😆 However there is another finder called the PiFinder that uses Plate Solving for incredible accuracy, and is nearly instantaneously in Version 3. It is also a DIY device where people customize it for their own use and 3D print cases, mounts, etc and just buy the electronics "kit". But of course is a bit higher priced. The PiFinder is a stand alone unit without the need for a blinding phone display, plus works on any scope and any mount for push-to use. But overall I think yours is a nice product 👍, although a bit over priced.

If it's as accurate as Starsense Explorer then it's certainly a much easier and neater solution. Assume it won't be so sensitive about which smartphone is used either.

The sensors are in the box so it shouldn't matter what phone you use depending on the minimum requirements of the app.

Hello, I already have this box and I wonder why it must be initialized on stars and not on planets? Because given the weather in my area it would be much easier to spot them, if you had the answer? Thank you

The stars never change position in the sky as the planets do. In the future (maybe tomorrow!), perhaps the built-in in AI guidance system could use date/time and a planetary calendar to allow use of bright stars as alignment targets.

Interesting but feels over complex. I use the brilliant 'ps align pro' apple app. for just $3.99. Fix it to the dob. Select the object you want to find from its database. Select 'Push to' The app then suggests a nearby bright star. Move the dob to that star. Press align on the phone then the app directs you to the object you are looking for. So simple.

Thank you for such a thorough demonstration. It still seems like a lot of setting up for if I only quick view of the sky. This has put me off using finders like sky commander. I think I will stay using my Klein Tools Digital Angle Gauge and the protractor on the base of my Dobsonian and get the coordinates for Stelarium. The setting up is very quick, point the base of the scope north, done.

Doesn’t look like that much of a faff once you’ve done the first calibration. Aligning the base of a big dob to better than 1 degree north must be a bit tricky? Those digital angle gauges aren’t that cheap either. I don’t do much visual work now but if I did I’d be interested in this little device

You sound a lot like me, and I am currently using a Sky Commander on my 18" F/5 Dob. There is a new finder called the PiFinder that is miles ahead of the Sky Commander, and this nice little gadget. The PiFinder does Plate Solving and is very accurate, and fast! as a stand alone unit without the need for a phone, or computer. Although Stellarium can also be used for your Planetarium software as your sky map for hunting down targets or planning a night's session. I'm waiting until Spring to get a PiFinder hoping more improvements are incorporated (it's fantastic now), and the prices will hopefully drop.

@Astrolavista

Hi Vic, a colleague tested the MeMstar with a 16" Dobsonian and reported that it worked well, provided a wide-angle eyepiece was used. Based on my own testing, it seems the device works best with an eyepiece capable of delivering at least around a 2-degree field of view. Larger SCTs or Maksutovs might face some challenges achieving this.
@JeffCounsil-rp4qv
@JeffCounsil-rp4qv Ай бұрын
As you saw in the video, it could probably do "alright" with a longer F/L scope after doing a lot of re-synching over multiple targets to improve accuracy. But you would also be needing to use lower power, wider field eyepieces to acquire the target, then switch eyepieces.

No reason to watch for lackluster equipped SkyWatcher: Dual speed focuser, entry level 2" wide view eyepiece and neck saving RACI finder scope are worth like £200 over SkyWatcher.

Truly great presentation and I (as a newbie) was able to understand everything you said (NOT even close to common on KZbin films), great pedagogical talent!!! I have a questions regarding your statement about that beginner telescopes might not be able to reach focus due to the design. I am planning to get a Sky-Watcher Explorer 200 PDS to be used with a Canon EOS 70D and an HEQ5 Pro mount. Will I be able to get focus on that setup? Many thanks in advance!

Great video Chris! I'm considering getting a Newtonian. I'm concerned about collimation as I'll be using it a a field scope. I hear an f4 system can be a nightmare and I should stick to a more conservative f5 system. Which one have you got and what are your thoughts? Clear skies Mark
