There is no adjustment on the internal gear hub, only way to modify the ratio is to change to rear cogs or the chainring.

Thanks for the info. Agreed, the simplest solution would rvto change the chainring from 52T to 48T. I am considering swopping my LitePro 48T chainring with that of my Week Eight 52T as it would improve the problems of both.

Hey guys i just want to make your aware some changes. As of the 2nd of December 2019 the DHET will no longer verify South African degrees due to FRAUDULENCY. SAQA will now issue verification letters for South Africans who wish to submit their degrees to Dirco for the Authenticating.The Fee for this is R255.00 . Things you would need need do. 1 email VERIFICATIONS@SAQA your id number, full name and you degree info eg B.ed(Senior Phase). They will send you an invoice and once they have received a proof of payment will they issue your verification letter.

Hi Damian Thank you for this thoughtful and in-depth video, honestly this is the most informative source I've found as a South doing research. I am currently finishing my internship for my National Diploma in Chemical Engineering, I'd like to know if I would still be able teach with this or it would have to be a Btech Degree? Thanks
@damianklop533
@damianklop533 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Fundiswa. As to your question. I am not sure. I do know that a Btech degree is recognised as having equal weight as an SA degree at an SA university as long as you completed two years theory and practical. Therefore, SA education department should accept it as a full degree. What I am not sure about is whether China will accept it. My guess is that China will accept it but it depends on what kind of job that you want in China. Do you want to work in a private institution (such as a private academy) or a public institution (such as a public school)? They could say if you are qualified to work there or not. If you want to work in a private institution then I have met a recruiter looking for South Africana qualified to work there and I can pass his details onto you. His company recruits foreigners to work for the schools attached to his.

Damian Klop Hi, thank you for your reply! I think it would be best if I finished my degree as I believe it would better my chances of employment and it would better my remuneration package. However if it is possible to teach with just my diploma while I finish & hopefully pay for my degree long distance then I would definitely be open to the opportunity whether it be private or public, as long as I am able to teach legally in China with a Z visa, I don't want to stress my family out by getting myself deported! My email address is [email protected] if you would like to pass it on to your recruiter friend or if you have any more of your valuable information. All the best overseas!

A critical question to ask is where do you live? If you live in Gauteng then an agent is much cheaper as all the government institutions are close by. If you are in CPT or Durban then the courier fee will be much higher and this is where agents often get a MUCH better courier rate than if you did it yourself.

Hey, thank you for making this video! Its incredibly arduous. I wish I saw this a week before running back and forth for documents and stamps that I didn't have. I am going to start a position in a university teaching oral English. I've taught kids before but I wanted to know if you had any experience with this or could point me in the direction of some resources - there isn't any real guide. Hope you're having a great time abroad. Can't be worse than back home. Cheers Damian!

Hi. I work at a university (Shijiazhuang Tiedao). In terms of Oral English at Universities. The coursework depends on the university. Some universities have a set curriculum that tells you what to teach and when to teach and other universities say they have a curriculum but actually they don't and they expect you to do your own thing. I teach at a university where you do your own thing. When I asked for the curriculum, they plonked two books in front of me which were totally unusable and I had to create my own curriculum for 17 lecturers a semester along with powerpoint which I divided into 13 lectures, a mid-semester test, final exam, and two lecturers for presentations. Each class was around 2 hours long. I would suggest figuring out a class structure that suits you best e.g. warmup, pronunciation, vocabulary, lecture for theory, conversation for practice. As for resources, I first selected 13 lecture topics that interested me (with the first being an introduction class about me followed by my students introducing themselves) and molded them around my preset teaching structure. In terms of sources, I went to some ESL sites and youtube to get relevant exercises but it really depends on the level of your students and IF your university has a set curriculum. Universities will say they do, but likely what they mean is that they have some books somewhere that you choose from and you do your own thing. But not all universities here are the same.

In terms of what to focus on correcting in terms of Oral English, I think it is critical to highlights the common errors that Chinese ESL speakers make caused by the transference of their local language (Chinese) e.g. the pronunciation of the word 'usually'. I plan to have a video of Common Errors made by Chinese ESL speakers soon.

Thanks for getting back to me with all that information. I had a feeling that there wouldn't be a solid teaching plan in place. Atleast it offers us a chance to tailor the information and adjust as necessary. I'm unsure of the English level of the students so I will have to prepare for anything. I'm just afraid they won't be as open to communication as little kids are. Do you plan on staying in China indefinitely by the way? I've subbed, hope to see more videos if you can. Cheers!

Hi, i just wanted to find out. How do i send money from China to SA? Can we open a China bank account and how did you manage to transfer the money? Thank you
@damianklop533
@damianklop533 7 жыл бұрын
Hi. This is going to be a long reply. [Opening a bank account]. Yes, you can open a bank account but it takes a lot of bureaucracy. You pretty much have to take a Chinese speaker with you. If possible open a bank account at Bank of China as it is easier to send a money overseas with that bank. [Sending money overseas]. Sending money overseas is difficult. You have five options: (1) international transfer from your bank in China to SA, (2) Western Union/Moneygram, (3) Using a third party remittance company, (4) Paypal (expensive), (5) or taking cash back with you to SA. But this is complicated by INTENSE Chinese bureaucracy. In terms of sending from bank to bank. First, take your passport and other papers connected to you job to the bank. Second, convert RMB (Chinese money) to Dollars (as you can only send money overseas in USD). Thus, you can't do a straight transfer from RMB to ZAR. This is where a big bank like Bank of China is good as they will convert and send to SA in ONE step (RMB to USD fee + bank fee) whilst smaller banks will do it in TWO steps (RMB to USD fee + bank fee, USD to SA bank fee) and charge double the fees. Now, here is the problem. As a foreigner, you can ONLY withdraw up to $500 a day (just over R6,000). So if you want to send $5,000 to SA then you have to withdraw $500 a day and this will take you 10 days (each day collecting $500) before you can apply to send this $5000 to SA. Third, it will take you an hour to make each transaction. In terms of Western union, it is similar to the bank, just less bureaucracy and someone in SA must pick up the money at the designated address and person that you tell them. The other option is to get a Chinese person to send your money to SA as Chinese can send 10s of thousands of dollars overseas in one shot. I.e. not many problems for Chinese but a HELL of a lot of problems for foreigners. Banking rules are changing but for now it is a total nightmare. In terms of taking the money with you, foreigners are only allowed to take 20,000 RMB with them out of China (R40,000) but if you brought this much with you into SA then this amount is over what you can bring into SA undeclared. Sorry for the bad news. This is what I found out. I still have to send money overseas though. I hope I am wrong but this is what I have found out. Also, it is VERY difficult as a foreigner to get online banking. If you are based in Beijing or Shanghai it is much easier as those cities are foreigner friendly. If you go to a bank that is not foreigner friendly and they are not sure about the rules for foreigners, then they will just say "no" and turn you away. Lastly, I have heard somewhere that you can only send 70% of your before-tax salary overseas. If true, then it is useless saving anything more than that amount.

Hi Melissa. Do you mean (1) the Chinese consulate Authorization Letter, (2) or the letters authorizing and instructing the courier/visa agent what to do? If you mean the latter then I don't have an example of the latter but all the letter requires is a letter with your details (your phone number, home address, ID number, photocopy of your ID) and a step by step instruction of what they need to do.

Hi Damian! Thank you so much for this information! You are truly a life saver! I just want to confirm and make sure I understand... For my TEFL, do I still have to do anything with it (authenticate, legalise and authorise)? or can I just send it to my employer? Also... for my medical exam report, can I also just send it to my employer or must I go through the whole process. *I am asking, because you said something about wasting your money and time doing it? Thank you
@damianklop533
@damianklop533 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Kyle. I was told that I had to have my TEFL authenticated, legalized and authorized before coming to China. But when I got to China, they just wanted my TEFL and the other South African with me just gave his TEFL (no authorization, no authentication, no legalization). So, no, it seems like you do NOT need to get this done. I wish I had known this as it wasted R1,000.
@damianklop533
@damianklop533 7 жыл бұрын
As for medical. Yes, same as TEFL, I was told to authenticate, legalize and authorize it before coming to China. But in China, they just wanted my original report - i.e. R1,000 wasted.The problem is that China massively changed their Visa procedures this year so we are lab rats.
@damianklop533
@damianklop533 7 жыл бұрын
I think a lot depends on your employer and how you ask your questions to your employer. If you ask "Do I have to have it authenticated and legalized and authorized" then the Chinese answer will be yes if they are unsure (which they are because of all the changes. But if you ask the negative "Do I not have to have it...." then the answer will also be yes as they seem to just follow your lead. I am with a university, so I don't know what public schools or private schools demand. China is the land of the red tape and no one really knows the full procedure. I got so many conflicting reports so I did everything. better same than sorry but it cost me at least R2,000 more than I should. Also, for medical. Ask your doctor to write that you lungs are fine and that you do not need an xray or body scan because they don't ask for your xray report in China. They do an xray and body scan of you anyways in China when you arrive. This will save you a few hundreds. As long as the doctor writes "no xray required as no TB detected" in his notes.

Sorry for the late reply. No youtube allowed in China so I get access only occasionally. If you are coming to China and have any questions to ask, please do. Sending money from China out of China is a royal pain like you cannot believe. So come prepared. Also, bring your SA tax number if you have one. They asked me for mine. Oh, and if you want youtube, facebook, google, get a good VPN BEFORE you come to China.

@damianklop533
@damianklop533 7 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply. My teaching background: I taught in Korea for 3 years, studied a PhD as a researcher in Germany, I have a TEFL certificate, and I worked as a Data Analyst in Poland. I found my university job at GoldStarTeachers.com and dealt with Christine. I also looked at eslcafe.com and other university job sites offering jobs in China and Asia. At a minimum, you need a BA degree and TEFL to teach at a Chinese university. THey often say they want teachers with masters or doctorate but I don't see this at my university. The hardest part of getting a job in China is doing all the bureaucracy. The university HR says one thing and reality is another. For example. University said that I must get my TEFL certificate authenticated and authorized. That cost me 100 dollars. Then when I got to China, the other teacher from South Africa just gave them his TEFL certificate, no problems. Also, the got my medical certificates authenticated and authorized for nothing. $150 wasted. The most important things you must get authenticated and authorized are your police check and university degree. Universities hire In April/May for a September start. The next time they hire is November/December for a March start.

But unluckily they email me that my application got rejected and told me to go as Tourist visa instead bring all of the documents needed and apply again at the local government. I just want to ask if that is possible? I would highly appreciate your advise. Thanks in advance!
