What would you do for a fermata on beat 3 and another on beat 4?
@BryantwSmith2 жыл бұрын
Excellent question. It depends on what the music calls for, and how you interpret it. If you decide that the music needs to break after beat three then you stretch beat three, then do a circle motion to make the cutoff, bounce out to repeat beat three, then come center to hold four. For a fermatta on four, come center, then slowly drag up. At this point, if you don't want a break, do a #3 movement to move straight into the next downbeat. If you want a cut off, use the left hand to do a circle motion while the right hand holds until the cut then prep the next downbeat. That's very wordy...here's an example video that might help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bqicp2eHe9h_h7s Watch around :47 and 1:40. Let me know if that helps. If not, I'll try another way.

Do you have some resource/catalog of gestures for different effects? Maybe a text recommendation?

and of course now I see you cite examples at the end of the video!

@@garciaalan186 this video refers to the "Conducting: A Hands On Approach" by Anthony Meiello textbook we use for class. It is a very useful handbook for beginner up to advanced music conducting techniques. I'd start there!

So incredibly beneficial. Thank you for this education. I’m a composer and recently had a performance of an 8-part ensemble. I knew basic patterns but realized quickly how little I really knew about conducting. It even had me rework time signatures to make the work easier to conduct. Cues were particularly challenging, especially on off beat entrances.

I dig it, especially the overlap part. The world would be a better place if we all played with synthesizers more.
