I bought the new mech and it is only single gear ratio. Also it is a lot cheaper than it seems, you are forgetting the return of installed parts price, when you upgrade the mechanism you return your other one and it discounts the price it ends up only being 7 gold with return. The only way you would have to pay full price is if you have a broken mechanism when you upgrade.

I did some float fishing with a heavy match rod at the 15m hole using bait fish. That made it a lot easier to get the other species.
