It's similar to a clutch on a car. Its a mechanism for engaging two shafts to transmit power.

@@epistte im guessing its pneumatically actuated (as there seems to be compressed air coming out on each stroke) but does it really work tribologically? isnt there way too much wear and or those discs. couldnt you use a hydraulic clutch too?

question , this kind of press is for punching nor forging ? surely the crank will bind up if i interrupt its length of motion with a 2" block of hot steel ?

Forging. The crankshaft weighs over 28,000# driven by a 22,000# flywheel. It will complete its stroke. Also remember the hot steel is being displaced into usually two concave dies.

i get you but im a blacksmith i am not making one stamp items i was referring to free hand forging , drawing out etc , i understand the machine would finish its travel on a designated thickness material but i would need to forge 16 - 50 mm tapering etc, this machine cant do that right ?
