5:46 "You are a freak, Ian Thorpe. You well might be the greatest ever". I think that statment still stands firm all these years later.

Every time I watch the Women's 400m at the Olympics, I marvel at how machine-like these girls are. From Shane Gould in Munich, to Janet Evans, Brooke Bennett, and now Kate Ledecky and Ariane Titmus. This is too long for a sprint and too short for middle-distance rhythm. But these girls basically sprint it and just hold that pace.

My parents were at a dog show. The whole show stopped for the time this was playing on the radio. I was home screaming at the telly bouncing from chair to chair

After touching first in the Sydney 4x100, Ian Thorpe left the water while other teams were still going. Just imagine if they'd disqualified those guys after that historic win, the sport would've become a laughing stock.
So the first 2 teams -- Aus and USA were both DQd. That's the 5th placer's dream come true.

Why would you want to win a gold medal that way? I mean sure it's gold but you weren't the best. Gold means you were the best and you weren't.

I had a trainer who used to train her back in the days. Must have been just 1 or 2 years before this aswell... One of her suits hang around our pool as motivation.

I remember getting up to watch this from Sydney I was 13. I was following Perkins because everyone was writing him off so I got up to support him. I remember screaming at the tv in excitement seeing him pull away and take victory. Great memories thanks Perkins ❤👍. I wasn’t even a swimmer 😅

I watched it live . One genuine blue eyed boy. He just disappeared from the rest. Grant Hackett was nearly as good.

Always with that cheating suit. Most people don’t give Thorpe much credit, on account of him being unable to excel without a special suit
