A (painted) piano does not predispose you to dance zebekies in a subway station, in NY or in Athens alike. (Try again in Salonica when the short metro joke comes true). I wonder if all those who dance to "Roza" tune (with "full folk orchestra" as that statement on old records' labels had it), really know what this song is all about - and how many of them would still dance to it, if they knew. On the other hand, "Roza" befits the piano. The great composer, a pianist himself too, must have conceived it while striking his white and black keys before he handing it over to Mitropanos's voice - and down to posterity (to abuse it). You deserved more likes because you are a good pianist, and a fan of laiko as I can assume from your other uploads. Laiko was one of the reasons I chose Greece to settle 35 years ago. Unfortunately, most of those who bothered to write you a positive comment, grant it as an endorsement of a proud national gesture rather than your art. As for me, I liked the way you approach it. Ain't it really a thing, but it is what should matter. Keep going.
@a_ioakimidis Жыл бұрын
Thank you Uncle Cat (great name 😅). I made a joke with the zempekia. Probably I wouldn't dance myself (except maybe in Saloniki 😅), I would rather talk to the pianist. I think we have to discuss some things you mentioned. 1st) What do you exactly mean with "how many of them would still dance to it, if they knew (the meaning of the song)"? Could you explain in more detail? 2nd) I don't see any "proud national" comments under my videos except in "Na t'ane to '21" which is a song about the greek independence in 1821. Actually I started the comment section there with the phrase "Χρόνια πολλά Ελλάδα" (Happy Birthday Greece) Please don't get me wrong. I just want to understand what you wrote and I'm thankfull for your nice words
@avunculuscattusingloria4 Жыл бұрын
@@a_ioakimidis Well, first of all I thank you for liking my name! In latin it sounds even better: "Uncle Cat in (the halo of) glory". A modest statement of who I (think I) am. After all, the years I was a kitten lie in prehistory! As about your questions now. "Roza" is a song about Roza Luxemburg, the famous Marxist philosopher and social fighter. Poet Alkis Alkeos never confirmed that, most likely because his mythical "Roza" is a combination of many sources beside the real Luxemburg, as poets usually do. Roza's tragic end, could also be a reference to his own sufferings, as he himself was badly tortured when imprisoned few years before - and spend the rest of his life with severe health problems because of it. Mikroutsikos on the other hand, was absolutely affirmative that in his opinion it is indeed a song about Luxemburg, when asked in an interview. So, this is actually a political song with very strong left-wing affinities, not exactly what a nationalist nation like the Greeks would really appreciate, if they knew some bits of history. A legendary zeikekiko, yes, among the best 100 of the 20th century, but definately not a song for fun and exhibition of greek middle-class "andrila". "Roza" is not a song about the "eternal female", nothing in its lyrics point to such a thing; it is a song about eternal revolution - that is, nothing to do with modern conservative Greeks. As about your second question, when I talk about "national pride", I'm not talking about Nazi-style stuff. Take Tsitsipas for example. There are people who love tennis and enjoy him as a world-class athlete, but most of his greek supporters actually support him just for being greek, they don't give a dime about the sport itself. Djokovic or Nadal, who are far better, wouldn't be able to stir the same passion to the average greek sports' fans. In the same vein, a pianist should be praised for his art, but in my eyes it seems that most of those who liked the video is because a greek did something very greek like playing "Roza" somewhere "in the foreign lands". I wish I'm wrong, but I'm afraid that doing just the same thing at home, would pass unnoticed, and attract less audience than your "piano cover" videos. That said, I must apologize for my judgements because these are the opinions of an ignorant. I listen to a lot of classical music and occassionaly suggest some in my channel, παλιό λαϊκό and rebetiko, sometimes jazz and world, but I don't have any musical education. All my involvement with music lasted a couple of years when I joined my ex-girlfriend's black metal band. She was a real drummer, I was doing backing vocals and holding a bass just for the stage effect. Of course that was almost 30 years ago. Pardon me for consuming 5 minutes of your precious life with my sheet. Be well! Uncle Cat loves music!
@a_ioakimidis Жыл бұрын
Oh please don't apologize for my "5 minutes" 😅. I like having good, interesting discussions. Ok, i get your points now. But I have to disagree (and partially agree) in some of them. Most Greeks don't really care about "political music". Mikis Theodorakis was at the left wing. But his songs are loved and the lyrics are well known by most Greeks. Music is music (except ultra extreme right wing, where people's well-being is at risk). And I think the term "nationalist nation" is a bit too harsh. Also, the zebekia is not a dance of "fun". You're imitating a drunk and dancing because of mental pain, grief, lovesickness, etc. So a political background or motivation could fit (maybe in distant relation). Your example with Tsitsipas is right. But you have to admit that that's not a "greek" thing. You are referring to average sports' fans. And the average sports' fan supports his countrymen in sports that he's not really interested in. That happens all over the world. Maybe you're right with the likes given to the video. But that's ok. I mean, I chose to play THIS song. I also could have played something by Chopin or Beethoven. But I wanted the New Yorkers to hear a greek song, a part of my culture, at this moment. Actually nothing bad. Again, don't get me wrong. I appreciate your words and accept your opinions (very interesting indeed). Thank you for watching and liking the video. Have a good time Uncle Cat
@avunculuscattusingloria4 Жыл бұрын
@@a_ioakimidis Nice to hear from you again! No doubt, politics and art do not necessarily have to be in odds. I can even walk a step forward and say that even politically objectionable art could still be great art and obviously those acquainted can discern it. All I meant was that I don't have much sympathy for those who dance with songs so tinted with an ideology they usually curse. And, yes, you're right, "nationalistic nation" except of bad rhetoric is not just harsh, it also carries the stains of collective responsibility dogma. Mea culpa. And, of course, I vehemently agree that ζεϊμπέκικο has to be a serious affair. Since the talk is about Mitropanos, one of my favorite songs is another of his zeybekika, a more orthodox one, "Σε μια στοίβα καλαμιές". It still gives me goosebumps, thirty-odd years after I first heard it, even though I'm in disagreement with its metaphysics. Or I could mention Stratos' "Αϊτός αϊτό μεγάλωνε", which, save for my objections about its social worldview is another epic zeybekiko. Unfortunatelly, there are zeybekika and "zeybekika" that are actually parodies, yet they became great hits. As about the Tsitsipas' example, it wished to point how unfair it is for an athlete or an artist to be seen as a representative of collective desires rather than what he or she really does. It's easy to be multitude's darling as long as you win, everybody wishes a ray of your shine. But if you fall from grace they soon forget that, regardless the outcome, both winners and loosers spent long and lonely hours of practice and training. So, I guess I must insist in my original opinion. If someone doesn't like classical music, or cannot stand the sound of piano, should still be allowed to support the pianist just because he's a fellow countryman? I suppose that a short answer is "Yes, if they are willing to buy tickets for his next concert", but if they don't really like what one's doing, they show a contempt for his efforts, they use his achievements for their vainglory. The artist chooses both repertoirs and audiences. Been born an expat (actually, unlike you, I've never been in the United States), I don't have a first hand experience of what would grab the mood of those Newyorkers - although my mother was one. Maybe the inspiration of the moment, so Mikroutsikos, or any other greek standard might have equal chances if it meant to be, and obviously a greek tune was more likely to make them turn their heads than well-known classics. Personally, I find that gentle giant you tame even more fascinating when pianists and composers with mediterranean or middle-eastern roots use its unlimited possibilities. Of all western instruments it is the one that can capture the echo of the Orient without making it sound somehow folkish, like, let's say, a violin. Piano could really be first-class trojan horse to initiate western classical pianists into greek musical traditions! Keep up the good work. AvCiG meows blessings on you!
