Please make a video this season. I love these. I’m getting a Boykin this weekend!
@IdaHowitzer11 ай бұрын
I opened this because I was legitimately curious about Boykins and could not get through the whole video. I don't mean to be a hater hiding behind a computer, but it honestly just pains me to see today's hunting videos and the influence they have on today's hunters. It seems like everybody is out there trying to become the next hunting hero. We have glorified killing scenes in slow mo, shooting dead birds as they fall, epic music, and the hero-hunter persona. As hunters, I think we are truly forgetting about what brings us out into the field. Today, it is a hyper commercialized, competitive, consumptive sport. All this and social media have fueled more crowding on publicly accessible hunting grounds, increased leasing and outfitting, and made hunting more of a pay to play venture than ever before. In my home state, waterfowl hunting on public land is almost completely ruined. I think it's time we all evaluate what we are doing and adopt the #huntquietly mentality.

Great job! Is there no handling? I noticed you don't respond to the comments. I have a question. In the novice, is there not any blinds? Only marks.
@tomahawkkennels-boykinspan7652 жыл бұрын
In the novice division there are only marks on land and water no blinds. The dog must be perfect to win. Straight lines to the birds, no cheating, perfect line manners etc. This is a field trial not a hunt test.

Rather humbling and rewarding to be able to “work “ with a dog that requires no “work”. A tribute to the breed.
@tomahawkkennels-boykinspan7652 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure what you mean about a dog that requires no work. These dogs require tons and tons of work. They are not natural retrievers they are genetically built for upland work we as humans have developed the retriever side of them and then every single dog requires a lot of work!

Great vids man! Would be even better if they were broken up into a bit shorter vids and if the music volume was turned down. Looking forward to seeing more vids of you working Chief.

Hey I’m a little bit new to hunting and I have been working on my Boykin copper he is doing pretty good and I know I haven’t spent the time I need for him to be perfect but he struggles with marking down birds and his confidence in wounded birds do you have any tips that may help me with that and how did you get chief confident enough to pick up a bigger bird like a goose

Jesus we need to take a duck hunting trip to Arkansas. Me my family and our boykin would have a ball out there. You guys have a lot more ducks than we do here in South Carolina. A slow year for y’all would be the best year ever for us. During the 2018-2019 season we only killed at most 15 ducks I can’t remember the exact number. We would take him goose hunting but they are bigger than he is and he doesn’t like to retrieve them. 67 geese in 3 days is impossible here. We’d be lucky to get 30. Also your dog is beautiful.

Chief is a boss! I’m getting a Boykin in February, any recommendations on training books/gear?
@tomahawkkennels-boykinspan7653 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the compliment he is very special to me! Congratulations on getting your new pup! As far as information to study and learn on there is alot out there. I purchased and read/watched everything I could get my hands on when I started learning myself. I think with boykins Bill Hillman has some good theories that I have used on alot of my program but have put alot of things together. Blaine Tarnecki has a new program out that is based on boykins that I would recommend. As far as gear goes keep in mind that dogs cant see orange. One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is trying to get specifically young dogs to retrieve orange bumpers. Orange is used for blind retrieves in training make sure to get a white bumper to start your training with. Feel free to reach out with any questions during your journey!

5 1/2 month old female Boykin, just flushed her first pheasants in New York but is sound sensitive. Any suggestions?
@tomahawkkennels-boykinspan7653 жыл бұрын
Thanks for reaching out. 5 and a half month old pup is still a very young pup! We do not shoot over or hunt any of our dogs or client dogs that young. I would recommend following a training program that introduces gun fire correctly so that you have a great gun dog for the rest of her career. If you do not introduce this correctly it will be very hard if impossible to correct in the future.
@charliebelle66932 жыл бұрын
@@tomahawkkennels-boykinspan765 Overcame her sound sensitivity and hunts like a champ. Shot 9 pheasants over her last year and she broke 2 flocks of turkey. She's at 18 or 19 pheasants this year and broke several flocks of turkey. She will pounce on down pheasants but will not retrieve. She retrieves bumpers and wings tied together and retrieved pigeons as a pup. Any more suggestions?
