2:21 “I used up my goodbyes” My favorite line of this scene, and totally unapologetically badass.

In the 1991 movie Flight of the Intruder, the pilot Jake's handle is "Cool Hand". Brad Johnson plays Lt. Jake "Cool Hand" Grafton in the movie. R.I.P.✝️🇺🇸🦅⚰️🪦😩 cool hand

Yeah it was a hellva aircraft. I wouldn't try that in a f18 super hornet in any way shape form or fashion. Hell a 22 cal pistol could shoot it down. No range. 20k pound pay load but with out external tanks you refuel quite often.

My friend was in the USN during the Vietnam War serving on Yankee Station. Cannot recall the name of the CVN, possibly the Oriskany. He was part of the mechanic crew servicing this Intruder type. Very high tech for the time. No defensive armament but being all weather it could fly and go into savage weather that enemy pursuit aircraft would be hard put to chase successfully as that was when they flew.

I shared an office, decades ago, with an ex RAF WWII Mosquito pilot. He was 18 back then (1944), and wouldn't tell me much about it except for the incredible speed at tree-top height as he hunted for things to shoot up. He told me in passing that you had seconds to spot a target, correct the aim and squeeze off a burst, but that you NEVER EVER go back for another run. That would be suicide. Not dissing the film, just saying how brave and foolish a second pass would be.

So... high value target, follows an obvious feature that leads to the target, unsuccessful first pass, computer fails, second pass successful with spectacular results. Sounds familiar.

I was an A-6 Intruder Bombardier/Navigator in the early 80's. My first squadron CO was rumored to be the real guy behind the Wilhelm Dafoe character. He obviously didn't get killed in the end. He would never confirm or deny it. But he was the kind of guy who would have done it.

The Intruder's capabilities I thought were remarkable being it's top speed was subsonic..... It was resilient and agile the side by side cockpit suggested it was compatible too the F-111....
