Very helpful and informative. Nice to know you can prune an Angustifolia harder than I thought as long as there are fresh buds/shoots further down the stems and that doing so will encourage them to grow as they will now get more light. Do you prune that hard every year, or only when they start to get leggier than you want them to?

I am so glad to be of help. I always prune them like that in the fall or in the spring. And because they are getting older and some of them are starting do dry and die in some parts sometimes i go lower, i risk losing the plant, but the Angustifolias most of the time will recover very beautiful and its like a new plant, but you take some risks, but only if you see new buds under what you prune! 😊❤️🤗

When is it the first time you should prune a lavender plant? I've started mine from seed, the smallest have reached 15cm and the tallest 60cm or so. I live in a temperate area and have no risk of frosts. Also do they naturally form into bushes or do I have to prune them in a way to do form these bushes? Thank you.
@TheLavenderFarmer
@TheLavenderFarmer 15 күн бұрын
Hello, so in the first year you should not let the plant bloom for a better root development,and in the fall or when the temperature is droping below 20 celsius degrees you should give it a prune to prepare it for the next season. If you have no season when the plant is getting dormit, a semi winter you consider the harvesting time as pruning, and just let it be. If you prune the plants, all of them will become bushes, some of them like the Grosso or Folgate have a round natural tendency, but all of them will become bushes, that is one of the main reason for pruning. Keeping the plant tight in the form that you want and keep in mind, where you cut....that is the place where two or more shoots will grow therefore more flowers! 😊

It is the start of Autumn in the UK and I intend taking semi-ripe cuttings tomorrow. This is the first video I have seen of someone showing how to take hardwood cuttings of lavender in Spring, so now I know that even if I make a mess of my cuttings now, at least I get a second chance in April! Very clear and well explained. I hope you can show us how the cuttings you planted in the video grow as the year progresses - it would be great to follow them through to when they are in your field and doing the job that you propagated them for.

I am so glad to be of help! 🤗❤️ I make cuttings in the fall and put them in the green house and thru the winter they make roots, and in the spring i just change the pots or leave them in the soil until the next fall when i dig them out and plant them. And i make cuttings even in the spring! Its the same thing....i will make a video probably in October on how to propagate Lavender in the Fall!

Thank you so much, I would say definitely to prune them, if you want them to live more just prune them from the beginning. Lovely video! Thanks for sharing! 🌸🌷 How old is your lavender? I pruned mine just yesterday but I noticed some branches didn’t have any buds on them, what do you do in this case? Also, in winter, temperatures drop well below zero sometimes ( -15 to -20 degrees C) do you think it’s safe to plant it in the ground? (I have it currently in a pot) Thanks, Take care
@TheLavenderFarmer
@TheLavenderFarmer Ай бұрын
Thank you, glad to be of help! :) Is it a normal lavender or Santolina? So if the branches dont have any buds just scratch a little on it to see if its still green or if its dead. If its not green you can remove it. Most of the lavenders from angustifolia type will resist -25 degrees C if they are covered with snow. The main problem is the moist and humidity in the soil. If its damp or to much water....that will kill the plant. I always recommend planting the lavender into the soil, they will do better than planted into a pot, because in the pot all the soil will go frost, but into the soil, probably if you din 10 cm deep the soil is still ok. So my advice is to plant it into the soil! Hope it helps! :)

@TheLavenderFarmer
@TheLavenderFarmer 2 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! 🤗 So, about the analysis of the soil...i have never done one and you are right, the soil should be alcaline, but from my experience.....lavender....the Angustifolias are adapting easily even to a slightly acid soil. The problem with acid soil is that usualy its clay, and doesn't have a good drainage. So if you solve that...i don't think you will have a problem. If you want to increase the ph, use some lime and compost into the soil because both have a high ph! Hope this cand help you! 😊

My stoechas was doing so well. I just got it this year. She had multiple flowers. I put her outside in full sun 7a. I think she got too hot, as she started to wilt I brought it back inside to my garden window. She was doing better. We are having a a humid heat wave… for some reason it’s almost like the soil is cracking outside… it’s never done this before here. The air is incredibly humid but the soil is so dry it’s cracking. I heard you say you need to prune my plant is still somewhat green, wilted (as if it was sad not dead), do I need to wait to do this in the fall? Should I cut the shriveled up flowers off? I have her in a terra cotta pot on my patio currently. Would you bring her inside to the garden window? I’ve never had any success with lavender until I met her and I really want her to have a long healthy life.

Its so beautiful when i see people that loves their plant so much! ❤️🤗 My stoechas did the same, and last week i cut it at half of its height. Be careful at watering, now when its so hot once at 3 days give it a good soak, and yes....the heat is so strong. I placed mine in a place that has direct sunlight only a couple of hours. It would be best the morning sun until 12:00, and after this hot weather passes give it more sun. I hope your plant recovers, but remember....plants do die, the fun is when we succeed after we failed a lot of times! ❤️🤗
