I have worked as a Court Certified Interpreter for 20+ years, and EVERYONE has understood "renunciar" for "waive (rights)". Translation is not a different animal, it's not a different skill, that is a fallacy. An effective interpreter MUST first be a translator.

Not even native Spanish-speakers are qualified to interpret/translate between English and Spanish. Just being bilingual is not enough: that's tantamount to saying one can be a pianist because one has two hands. Spanish interpretation/translation takes YEARS of training and preparation. A "bilingual" cop or attorney who has ONLY trained in ENGLISH and happens to know some Spanish does not mean they are qualified to provide public services in Spanish!

But more often than not, "bilingual" cops don't actually speak Spanish. They say they do. They say they grew up speaking Spanish, or that it was their first language, but they end up speaking Spanglish or a Spanish that is simply unprofessional, full of false cognates and faulty syntax. THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO USE PROPER LEGAL TERMINOLOGY. Court Certified Interpreters should ALWAYS be relied upon. Language Access needs to be consistent to be effective.

Great to hear some make a full recovery. Unfortunately insurance favors younger people. My grandma had a stroke but insurance refused to pay for physical and speech therapy after 3 months. Her dr claims it will be a waste of time. He doesn’t think she’ll be able to speak again. I haven’t given up on her so I’ve been practicing with her and she recently said “yes.” So I have hope but unfortunately insurance and some drs give up way too soon.

Excelente presentación. La señora directora se le detecta que es de España. La chica Joven no le pude detectar 100% pero podría ser puertoriqueña o cubana( bien hablada) o Venezolana .

To succeed as an interpreter, one MUST be an active reader (of varied forms of literature) in BOTH languages. There is no way around this fact.

I always saw myself as a translator for my parents but the truth was I was more like an interpreter. I always get so amazed at how each different presentation we see, opens a million new ways to use your degree. In the news, you always see these non-English speakers being mistreated and miss informed in court cases when they can't communicate or understand the language and it truly is a shame. Hearing what Olgarina said is eye-opening and I will encourage all my friends that want to be lawyers or in paralegal studies to try to pursue Spanish as this skill can only help people. You also don't truly see how important it is for the interpreters to be on top of their game and it's neat to see someone truly go in-depth about it.

It is amazing to see a 2020 graduate succeeding after this crazy year and making the best of what she can. The combination of psychology and Spanish is a great way to combine two passions and seeing it come to life like how it did for Samantha is amazing. The opportunities are endless sometimes. I agree that using these classes as a bridge to real life and making friends with the people you see every semester is one of the great benefits of the translation program and shows how we benefit in small different ways.

I always have had a secret passion for crime-solving and investigating. I always hear people say that people change their careers at least 3x in a lifetime and I always think ill be an investigator at some point but I never really saw it fit in with what I am currently studying. Seeing this piqued my interest especially having my background in the Spanish program I love to see new ways where I can use the tools I'm learning in college in out-of-the-box ways. Dragana made me realize that networking is really helpful and I am definitely more interested in Sigma Delta Pi as it opens so many doors for people. Spanish helps you communicate to even more people and in any way, I can help I would love to.

Dalia Lopez was one of my favorites career nights this semester, however, I think I was a little bias because it was also my favorite subject this semester. I like how she showed the loreal campaign, I am a business, language, and culture major and I never saw myself really using translation directly in the beauty industry which is where I would like to work so it opened my eyes and I'll definitely be looking for jobs in this field.

Translation in work is commonly misconstrued in being very difficult to get across on a professional level. There is a phrase that Dalia explained which is “being in the know” and doing research on any given topic. I am actually in the midst of marketing my first BIG illustrated novel, as an artist and a writer, so balancing both facets in the creative world is something that has to be straightened out already as it is, and doing research about certain terminologies and treating your brand professionally is extremely important but becomes much easier with repetition. I found the phrase where she explained about intimidation and that the world of transcreation will train you on jargon or any facet of that line of world, very comforting and relieving. (Faith)

A family member of mine actually works in East Orange, and they can also relate to the need and cruciality of speaking or having any education in the Spanish language. There are increasing specifications in this modern world, especially in the United States. In Public Defense, as Dragana said, it IS rare for someone to have a Spanish degree, let alone with a concentration in Translation. Working in PR or with the public in general, knowing Spanish, it gives you an experience like no other; you have the ability to speak with twice the amount of people than you would normally speak with if you only knew English. It is indispensable knowledge and using the language makes any job all the more rewarding. (Faith)

Using machine translation is an important approach to consider in the modern world, and on a cultural level, I agree and believe that there is a unifying grade to translate resources for campaigns such as those that are non-profit. When the model is built to fit that particular campaign, such as WWF and Heifer, Linux is not the only thing that needs to be handled in terms of data, but machine translation is there to do the majority of the grunt-work and help maintain as accurate a translation as necessary for a particular country. Attitude and semantics are incredibly important, and the issue with AI is that it can’t completely portray a sense of reality, because we the PEOPLE have experienced life. Computers haven’t. (Faith)

Since I have finished an internship in 2019 at the NYC Civil and Criminal Supreme Courts, I can attest to the fact that leaving out informational material in accordance with specific Amendment Rights (5th) for the defendant is a crucial legal and ethical error. Every single person on this planet has the right to have documents presented to them. The closure is not complete unless an interpreter correctly translates all of this information FOR and not TO a defendant because of the obligation of the court system. It is incredibly important that EVERYONE understands what is happening. Olgarina has provided this information with deadly accuracy, and any slight deviation in the material presented in the court hearing on the part of the interpreter can be extremely detrimental and life-changing to a defendant in question. (Faith)

I agree with her that Spanish is very important. Also, knowing how to interpret in terms that the Spanish speaking person understands is very important because they need to understand everything in order to agree with anything. They can’t make a decision without knowing what is being spoken about.

This was amazing! I love the idea that you were able to translate a children's book especially because I'm an elementary school teacher and now pursuing my masters in Spanish with a certification in Translation. You spoke about so many things and so many opportunities/jobs that can be done with having this certificate. My concentration as an undergrad was also Psychology and I always wondered how i could do something with that and now its nice to know that after my completing this Spanish certificate maybe I can find opportunities to translate within APA. Thanks so much!
