I love layouts that model a grimy, kind of imperfect-looking world vs. more pristine looking, purely nostalgic ones. It feels much darker and realistic, but still with a kind of warmth to it

I would like it if this was a real railway. Would be a nice transport back to the 1940's or 50's when there actually was still train travel. I hope to revive some of that with either live model trains or put the gauge up to minimum (15 inches) if it would be more beneficial. One day hopefully.

I think it’s quite neat having the T1 Duplex pulling a freight train. Sorry if this my only takeaway from this, but I just love it when streamlined steam locomotives pull freight trains for some reason.

Thanks for the note! I will be checking out your channel soon. I am uncertain of such documentation exists. George does keep meticulous design notes that I was lucky enough to get a glimpse of back in July. Is there a specific question you have?

@@IndoorRailfanNo specific question. I am a big fan of Linn Wescott’s book on the Gorre and Daphetid and I know that he used various sources to create a G&D loco roster. Watching your videos got me thinking that a roster of the F&SM would be a cool historical document. Given the large number of photos and videos now available, I would think that a rudimentary one could be easily generated. I just wondered if it already existed in some way.

Thanks for the note and feedback. I would love nothing more than support the camera. However...such devices are not allowed during Open House events. The aisles are narrow and the crowd abundant. It would cause problems and ruin the experience for those who often travel thousands of miles to see the layout. For many who come it is a one-time only "bucket list" adventure. I don't want to take that away from anyone. Best I can do is not intake any caffeine and hold my breath while I am shooting video. I hope you check out the other videos on this channel. Thanks again for taking the time to share your feedback and for watching the video.

I had the opportunity to visit this layout in 2010 (or was it 2009) and shot photos / videos of it for Model Railroad Hobbyist. If anything this video does not capture (well almost!) the sensory overload that occurs when one sets foot in George's train room. I'm guessing that this layout has more detail per square foot than any other HO scale layout in the world. And George makes creating structures and scenery seem effortless. While there I heard a story about some guy who managed to get too close and mangled a structure near the layout edge! George, instead of being angry said not a problem, took it to his workbench and 30 minutes later it was back on the layout looking like nothing had ever happened! George is genuinely nice guy and I'm grateful I was able to see this. The layout is at the top of a long staircase and I think (if I'm remembering correctly) there are restrictions on waiting on the stairs. There is none too much people room in the layout room compared to the number of people who want to see it. To the OP who is more familiar than I with the process of getting into the layout, is advance registration or some such thing needed to get in? Do not just show up at the door, drooling with cameras dangling. All that said, if you like highly detailed layouts, this one is well worth the trip. One more thing, I didn't see the Sal Manilla Egg Co? Is it a victim of urban renewal? Many thanks for this video!
@IndoorRailfan
@IndoorRailfan 20 күн бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Sensory overload is an understatement. Every time I go (it has now been 13 visits) I am immediately overwhelmed by all of it. It takes me an hour to settle down enough to decide what I want to focus my photography efforts on. For Open Houses it's a $5.00 cover charge and no advance reservation is currently needed. Dates of the open houses are only published on the Franklin & South Manchester Facebook site. facebook.com/groups/159133629715412/ George usually has between 8-9 open houses per year. 2025 dates have not yet been posted. As far as Sal Manilla Egg Co., it's still a feature structure in the Bedford Falls segment of the layout. George is well into his 80s now, but still spends a lot of time on the layout. He is constantly tweaking it and making slight changes, or adding new structures. He keeps telling me he has run out of room, but he still manages to keep adding to it. New additions look like they have always been there. He is a magician.

🤨 Your layout is one of the best I have ever seen in my 26 years of model railroading. What was most disturbing was all of the inane backtalk that was going on in the background. It took away from my experience of enjoying your creation, including the site of individuals appearing in great backgrounds. When you are filming for youtube or another service please ask all involved to hold back any talk and appearance that breaks the experience of your great creation. Thank you.

Hello and thanks for the note. I appreciate the feedback. First. this is not my layout. I'm just an amateur photographer/model railroad enthusiast/modeler who loves this layout and lives not too far away. All video is taken during the limited Open House events, often very crowded. I had to make some editorial decisions on whether or not to include the footage where people are seen and/or there is background conversation going on. The footage to me was worth including. Perhaps an error on my part to include it. I hope you do check out the other videos I have made of the layout on this page. There are videos that feature specific aspects of the layout. The list includes videos on George's unique structures (both from his kits and one-of-kind scratch builds), figures, vehicles, backdrop techniques, track detail and more that you may appreciate more from a modeler's perspective. Better yet, consider traveling to the Boston area to see the layout first-hand. The live experience is by far the best. Happy New Year.

Yeah. There is a small stretch in the middle of some pretty loud voices. I agree it takes away. It was a coin toss whether to keep it or not include it. I released another video that is much better on Saturday. I am a member of a train club in South Australia and I periodically film our club layout and of course it is impossible to film with the background noise of the people, so I guess I have gotten used to the noise. Of course for others who are not such members I can imagine the background noise being annoying. I just started to watch a steam train video which started with music. I found that to be far more annoying and made a comment that a real steam train does not need music and left the video.
