Long video with few information. The only additional feature you show is FFT. What more can I do on the computer which I cannot do on the scope? How can I copy a very large digital signal out of the scope to do further analysis in another software?

Hello First off great video. I'm a newbie to the hobby and I've just acquired a eico 369 along with a tektronix 465 with DM 43. My question is where did you find your scope cable for the 369? I'm striking out around every corner trying to find this. I've found the demos n rf with no problem. Also I'd appreciate it if you could share more info on the crystal upgrade.
@joshbowman40604 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. The scope cable was with my 369, however the ends did not work for my scope. So I added a little board that allowed me to clip my scope leads to it. If you don't have one just use a couple of BNC connectors for the X and Y and remove the 2 pin (ground is on the outer ring connector. I feel it would work better. Otherwise put 2 finish nails in the pin holes and clip the scopes 2 probes to each and ground to the outer ring. As far as the 10.7 MHz crystal, I bought one off of EBay and hollowed out a crystal holder and soldered the modern one in. Now having said all of this, the 369 will get a badly adjusted FM radio in the ballpark but you may have to tweak it by ear to get it right. All this stuff you add onto the tuned circuits loads them and changes them some. Furthermore most radios worked on just got caps replaced and maybe a few resistors and were not bad out of tune and simply tweaking them made them sound fine. However it's kind of fun making the curves and moving the marker, it really helps understand how FM works. Good luck.

this has to be the best FM alignment video I have seen and to a complete rookie, this is incredibly helpful. explaining the theory of operation, what you are doing, and what the scope is showing is something a lot of other videos lack. I have a question about the signal being injected. Is it possible to do an alignment like this with an RF generator (like an EICO 324) that doesn't have the sweep and marker capability? I'm thinking yes, but it would be more difficult.
@tinkeringwithelectronics7 ай бұрын
You certainly can do it with an RF signal generator, if it's not too far of out of alignment. most or not very far out of alignment if out at all and can be aligned effectively just by ear even. Also remember everything you connect to the circuit will load the circuit and eventually you'll have to tweak a little by ear anyway. Good luck

I have a digital Siglent scope and signal generator. I am not sure I’ll be able to set up like you did. Question…. What are you measuring on the Y axis of your scope. Is it the DC voltage at the marker which is the DC voltage at 10.7 MHz?

@tinkeringwithelectronics2 жыл бұрын
Pat, thanks for the comment. Neither of these hacks did much to improve the 369, but were fun to do. 1st the blanking is done by opening the feed to pin #3 of V3A (12AX7). I simply removed R13, R18 and C31 from pin #3 and put them on an empty solder lug nearby. I then attached the SPST switch to Pin#3 and the lug with R13, R18 and C3. The RF out is a coax from a BNC t the J3 X-TAL's leg via a 101 capacitor to pin 1 of the 29758 (PC3). Hopefully that will help.....frankly I can't remember where I got these hacks. BTW, the PC3 is most likely made of unatainable, so don't harm it. Again, I really don't thing these hacks improved much.

Hi, I am really in shock after watching your "great invention" . I have been working with tv's and radios for a long time, and always had a problem with the set on the workbench, but after seen this video, I am surprised on how easy could be to build something to handle the set while repairing or adjusting it. Can you please share more information about this great tool? like measures and the most important, how can it hold the radio or whatever you are working on. Holes in the chassis? pressing the chassis with the red handlers? Please it could be a great help for people in the repair/restoration team, like you and me. Thanks
@joshbowman40602 жыл бұрын
LOL! This couldn't be simpler! All you're seeing is 2 piece of aluminum channel. I just drilled holes in the side of the channels and treaded for a 1/4" bolt that is back treaded with a nut. Don't allow the bolts to protrude through the channel, this will interfere with the chassis being mounted. I added spaces between the nut and the from to allow for stuff like the dial to clear. This is all mounted in a wooden frame. The extra vertical holes in the wooden frame allow for bigger chassis'. As far as mounting the chassis, I utilize the same screws and holes that hold the chassis in the case. Nothing fancy here. I just used the manufacturers threaded mounting holes to hold it to the channel. You'll find that just a few holes are needed in the channel to adapt to most chassis.

Well done video and very informative. Also very helpful tip on getting the Heathkit generator on the correct harmonic. One question that might clear some things up for other viewers... when you move to the S curve alignment, are you still using the detector probe or is this a direct connection?
@tinkeringwithelectronics2 жыл бұрын
The Eico 369, connects directly to the radio. But to be clear, the sweep generators output is attached down stream of the radios dectector/discrimanator. As fun as it is using a seeep generator and making the S curve. You can do better by tuning by ear. Seems no matter how good of a curve I made, the radio never sounded good. So I'd always finish by tuning to a station and adjusting until it sounded good. Hope this helps. Josh

I did have one constructive comment - the segment where you show the schematic and point to things - do a separate take with that flat on a table with a fixed camera above and point/hand wave etc. It would be much easier to follow than pointing to a moving document. I would add that i am now going to view your other stuff even if its for things I did not know i was interested in - i like your explanation style.

I found this after doing an alignment on the same radio. I don't have an analog scope or an old sweep generator. I have various function generators and a signal generator. I couldn't figure out how to set it up with a scope. (how to set the scope up and with a sweep and all that). I just did my with a spectrum analyzer with tracking generator and it was easy....the only problem is A14 and A15 because you can't get the s-curve. (atleast I don't think so) So I used the steps for the signal generator and vtvm. I gotta say though that the spectrum analyzer makes a much clearer representation of whats going on...atleast to my mind.

Very interesting, personally I use a wobbulator I made as a project for AM, it sweeps between 450 to 520 Khz used with a 455 Khz home made marker, works a treat, I guess it's what you get used to.
@wa4aos3 жыл бұрын
Distortion is interesting with regard to what our ears like and don't like. A tube amp with 2 to 4% even harmonic distortion is usually found to sound rich or warm to our ears and is just one reason why tube amps are still so popular. However, an amp with a half of a percent ODD Harmonic distortion sounds very harsh to most of us. So, when I play with tube designs, I don't concern myself with a percent or two of even har,pnmic distortion but I always try to keep odd harmonic distortion as low as possible. If you do audio amp projects, any decent distortion meter is very helpful. Good luck with your projects.

Hello friend! Greetings from Brazil. I have a Meguro MSW-7626A Sweep Marker that has a Marker output like your Heatkit and I would like to know what is the purpose of this particular output? And if the 10.7Mhz Mark is also generated in the RF output or only in the Marker output? Thank you very much.

In my cases, the marker is separate from the sweep. Not certain what you’re asking about the “particular output” purposes. But discussing the many markers on the Heathkit, there markers are for peaking a TV.

Does the 6600 have an TTL-Connector on the back? Then you should pick your ext. trig signal from there and trigger on falling edge. This has the advantage that the trig signal on the TTL has a square wave with 50% duty cycle. This makes the center line coinciding exactly with the center of the ramp slope. Also make sure that the ramp frequency does not exceed 7-10 Hz. At least my 6800's VCO tendsl to lose linearity above 15 Hz. I hope this might helps. At least here I can display a bode plot of an 16 MHz crystal with the peak spot on within a half a dozen of Hz or so.
@manfredmurer95085 жыл бұрын
Forgot to mention: Make sure to make the ramp signal going EXACTLY from 0 to 5 V by setting it to amplitude 5 V with a DC offset of 2.5 V. The manual (at least for the 6800) is rather ambiguous in this regard...

Really interesting and timely for me as I’m currently building an Eico 378 audio signal generator from an unbuilt kit I purchased on eBay. I wasn’t familiar with your model of Heathkit generator until I saw this video, but it has the same interface as the Eico I’m building. I’m guessing the circuits are almost exactly the same. Like you, I didn’t really need an audio signal generator, but was more interested in building a 52 year old kit from an unopened box. It’s been a real treat so far and I hope to have it complete tomorrow or the next day. I imagine I’ll be experimenting with mine much as you are with an oscilloscope and some old amps. Take care, and great work on the video.

Very interesting, always wondered about using the sweep feature on a function generator...never had time to experiment. Great stuff! ~Jack, VEG
@manfredmurer95085 жыл бұрын
The sweep function is useless for that purpose as it does not give you any trigger output in order to sync your timebase. That's why also TwE uses the VCO to control the sweeping frequency via the ramp signal on Ch. 2. (more about that see my earlier post here...).
