I thought celery was such a good idea but after trying several times even mixed with alfalfa pellets I don’t know if I should give up😭 my mare just instantly recognizes when the celery is in the mix and spits it out😔Have you encountered similar situations? Maybe I should just resign that she hates celery😆

The birthing stall is funny I didn’t catch that. But here we call those walk outs. Paddocks are much larger.

My mustang took to this right away, and now asks for it, a LOT! In a way that makes sense to me in hindsight, it has also helped with trailer loading!

Totally agree with NOT hiding the halter/lead rope. I cringe every time I see someone do it. Horses aren't dumb, and it doesn't take long for them to feel tricked, and react accordingly.

Nice video! Was there any particular reason that you approached this more as a shaping exercise (with the touch cue as a hint that it involved foot movement) than a targeting exercise? I could see using a mat to anchor the rear feet with a nose target to get the reach.
@TheWillingEquine
@TheWillingEquine Ай бұрын
I did this a long time ago and would do it differently now. I decided not to take down the video but updated the text below it. At least until I have a new one to replace it. I would now do it with a target and probably a mat

How do you handle situations where the horse can't really say no? Do you still use start buttons and just hope they say yes? If they don't do you do it anyways? (Like for example with the dentist or something, idk about anyone else but we can't afford to have the vet come out without getting their teeth done, so if they said no to the needle we'd really just have to do it anyways...). Edit: Idk if I made it clear but like obv we would prepare them for the dentist and practice with multiple people, having the crush around, all that stuff...but if it comes down to it the whole point of the start button is that they CAN say no, right? So there's always a possibility they'll say no in a situation where...they can't, where they HAVE to have it done. So what do you do in that situation?
@TheWillingEquine
@TheWillingEquine 29 күн бұрын
Excellent question! The goal is to prepare in such a way that the horse doesn’t ever feel the need to say no. That they will be excited to participate and we aren’t running that risk. However, reality happens sometimes. Either the horse is very stressed, something goes wrong, etc etc First thing we try is to take a break and try again after a quick evaluation of why the horse may be saying no. Sometimes changing the set up, standing in a different position, changing the value of the reinforcer, having a different person do it, bringing a companion near by… these are some different ways we can help improve the experience for the horse and increase the likelihood of the horse saying yes. Second thing we do (and we try and avoid this when possible, but sometimes it’s truly urgent/an emergency and so we must) is switch to a more “tolerance training” approach. Meaning we don’t offer the start button, and we just make it as low stress and pleasant as possible to get it done. Tolerance training is an acceptable approach for many situations without ever pursuing start buttons, even in non emergency (like if your horse is “okay” with being bathed but doesn’t love it, but if you give them some alfalfa they will tolerate the bath and since you only do it once or twice a year it’s just not a big deal to take that route kind of thing) . However in a situation where it’s been necessary to teach a start button/cooperative behavior or you’ve already established that dialogue and understanding with the horse… we try our best to stay consistent with that and not take away the choice. Hopefully this helps answer your question!

I have one question...why? Why teach a horse to put more weight on the forelimbs? Why teach a horse to pitch forward when most equestrian endeavors require him to lift his forehand up? Like jumping for example. Long and low is not good for horses. I worked seven years in a huge equine hospital as their rehab specialist...more injuries were caused by this trend than I care to remember. This is NOT the way to develop an equine athlete.
@TheWillingEquine
@TheWillingEquine 29 күн бұрын
A couple of thoughts. 1. Too many people believe collection comes from lifting the head. This is not the case. 2. Forward down/long and low is not the same thing as “round and deep” or forcing the head down or going with the nose down without core and hind end engagement. How it’s done is important. At first yes there’s more weight on the forehand but they are not supposed to stay here for long, it’s only about getting that initial engagement of the core and hind end with the topline and neck relaxed, then starting to show them how to keep the hind end and core engaged while the forehand comes up too. 3. This is an older video that I’ve chosen to keep available because it’s a good alternative for people who were thinking about using auxiliary aids or gadgets (like the Pessoa system) to achieve “collection” , but I do now recognize that there’s “too much” long and low and the science as updated as well since this video. I now prefer to encourage forward/down and paying more attention to balance and core/hind end engagement rather than the head just being down. I plan on updating the video in the near future but haven’t had time yet. In the meantime I’ve updated the description to reflect that this is an older video with older information. Hope this helps clarify :)

Giving them a choice has been instrumental in helping me bond with the herd where I volunteer. Especially the ones people claim are grumpy. And treating them gently when removing burrs and such, no one likes having their hair ripped out at the roots.

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who has to tote water over to the horses. We built a little trailer with a 100 gallon tank and a small water pump. Works great, a lot better than walking 5 gallon buckets 1/2 a mile every day! Glad Sugar is okay! This is awesome! We are moving my horses to my house in 2 weeks. It’s been a long time coming but we finally have the property livable for them and will build out more after they are here. I moved 2 hours from where I boarded my horse and I’ve had to make the trek back and forth for 2 years. So happy to have him in my back yard soon. I am also using Quietex for the trailer ride and my TB will be on ulcer prevention for a week prior and 3 weeks after. I’m anxious but excited. Congrats! Can’t wait to see more.
