It's not about absorbing too much water. You can submerge the whole plant in water for a time. The problem is how quickly it dries. If it stays soggy and wet for days and days on end then the roots may rot. This will depend on factors like the size of your pot (smaller pots dry faster) the pot material (unglazed ceramic pots draw water out of the soil quickly) and soil composition (sand can dry very fast and you may need to water every day, it also doesn't hold nutrients). Pot shape also affects the drying time slightly. Tall thin pots (if glazed or plastic) dry slower than shallow wide pots. You may need to experiment to find a mixture that works for your climate and watering schedule. I use standard potting medium when planting in unglazed terracotta. If I use a plastic pot (unless it's very small or very shallow) then I use a mix of bark, sand, and a little bit of potting medium. Ideally whenever you water the soil should be dry within about 2 days, and you can water it again a few days after that. Succulents grow faster when watered often with lots of light, but if they're not drying out between watering then they will get worse instead.
