You have forgotten that Brazil had three times as many slaves as the south. Slavery there essentially disappeared during the triple alliance war, as being slaves were recruited into the Brazilian army. Although slavery was not completely bothered till later, in practice, the institution was dead by the early 1870s. If we had been able to avoid a civil war is most probable that slavery would have gradually disappeared. Economically, it made more sense to use people as a sharecroppers instead of slave. The institution of slavery was a horrible and evil practice. The efforts to preserve the right to dehumanize other human beings based on a false sense of superiority and financial gains are the cornerstones of what founded America.
