Doug John’s is so unique! I realize to the untrained ear (and even bassists) it may sound like run of the mill slap style funk.. BUT, take a shot at transcribing one of his tunes (16th triplet ghost note & rhythmic hell!) then play it with all the syncopation, accents, dynamic articulation etc.. And you’ll have a whole new appreciation for his stuff! P.S.; I truly regret selling my Pedulla mvp4 every time I listen to him!! I never expected they’d shut down for good! 🤦🏻♂🤦🏻♂

Hey man, just dropping in to let you know that I’ve absolutely burned through your discography since I found you and…. It’s just awesome. Also super cool that you’re running your YT channel. I don’t get much exposure to guys of your ability in my neck of the woods as I’m re-learning slap bass (long hiatus from playing due to life events). If you don’t mind, I’ve got a quick question for you - how low are you keeping your action? I’ve been playing this back-and-fourth game between keeping a nice low action and living with some buzz even with a soft touch while playing finger style and a more moderate setup that can generate totally clean notes when playing moderately. I’m trying to figure out if I just need to slap the snot out of the thing or if I should be keeping a bass with a slammed action for slap work. Been a while since my slap bass skills have been up to snuff…. Like 10 years 😬

Just discovered this, it’s incredible! I’ve been a fan of yours since wayy back in the early 2000’s.. Every time I hear or watch you play I’m reminded how big a mistake it was to sell my Pedulla mvp4! The fact that Pedulla has been long out of business & the fantastic sounds you’ve pulled from that instrument over the yrs.. It’s inspiring and melancholy at the same time, because it was tough finding a used MVP even when they were still being built.. I know I’ll never another one like I had for even a fraction of what I paid for it.. 😔

As a victor wooten inspired bassist I'm really disappointed in myself for not knowing this existed for the last 11 years. I have failed the bass.

This is the sort of video which explains why we should all attend concerts ourselves rather than rely on YT videos. Sound quality is abysmal even though I bet they sounded amazing at the gig. Sorry man!!

OK so I'm listening to Stanley on Spotify and his album finishes and Stairway to Heaven starts to play and I'm like Hmm this doesn't sound like Stanley but it's dope. I look and it's some guy named Doug Johns so I click on your album and I'm like WTF!! I'm thinking this is my new favourite Bass Player!! Cause this Dude is Damn Funky like me but way better!! :) And that folks is how you gain new fans!!

I always hated hearing bassists complain about playing blues... If it's boring, that's because you're making it boring. Nothing but room to stretch out and still hold the groove and hit the changes. Even playing around with little nuances in your attack and timbre, in the way you fret and sound the note... I could easily amuse myself for hours with those things alone, without ever playing an outside note or a run.
