Masha’Allah. Yes, our sins form a barrier between us and our deen, but alhamdulillah this barrier can be broken down by Istighfar, so we should set ourselves a daily target of repetitions and stick to it, say 200 Astaghfirullah al-Azim after each fardh salat or more if we can manage it in Sha’Allah.
