My 4 year old Vizsla has been vomiting for the past 9 months, she’s had an ultrasound which showed inflammation of her stomach, blood work, anti biotics, hydrolysed diet and still vomiting. Vet is saying the next step is steroids, she hasn’t had a biopsy done (financial reasons) is it likely steroids can stop her vomiting? thank you

The best practice for patients with suspected Inflammatory Bowel Disease is to obtain confirmation through intestinal biopsies. This allows for confidence in the diagnosis and treatment options. If this doesn't work, then we would recommend you have a conversation with your veterinarian about the pros and cons of trial therapies. It is not unusual to proceed without biopsy confirmation but knowing potential risks or issues is important and specific to each individual case. This is a conversation that is best had with your regular veterinarian. A specialist second opinion (Internal Medicine) to discuss trial therapies is also an option if not pursued already.

When do you give up? Over a year, thousands of dollars, hydrolyzed food she hates, steroids for months and the second we start to wean she stops eating, antibiotics for months. We have a 17 month old Yorkie and we have been fighting this since she was 3 months old. Even on the steroids she's getting obese, but it's obviously the steroids. The second we start to wean she's sick again. She had an open biopsy that showed severe eosinophilic IBD. I just feel like we have tried everything. She just sleeps. Doesn't play longer than a couple minutes. Hunches over. Still vomits. Her interest in anything is quite limited. At what point do you say, she has suffered enough?

Dear Deborah, thank you for your response. We are sorry to hear that your dog has not responded well to therapy. Unfortunately, there are a small number of dogs that may not respond to any therapy which can be frustrating and lead to the disease affecting their lifespan. The good news is that there are a number of dietary and medical options and in some cases finding the right balance is all that is needed however it can take time, expertise, and trial and error to get there. We would recommend talking to your regular veterinarian about a referral to an Internal Medicine specialist for a second opinion if this has not been done already. Sometimes having a second set of eyes as part of the team can make a difference.

My 20 month old Caucasian/Malamute has just been diagnosed after visable and xray results. The vet said it was a "stage 3" dysplasia, but haven't found anything regarding the stages of this.. I'm currently living in the Middle East and want to ask important questions of the veterinarian surgeon to be sure he's legit. Any good relevant questions I should be asking of the vet about skills, equipment, procedures, meds, etc. before putting my best girl in their care? it's not that I don't trust the veterinarian surgeon, btu I want to make sure they can explain and account for what needs to be done. Just in parting, thanks to all the vets in this video for their time making this.

Hi John. Our recommendation would be to consider how affected your dog is to you. If you feel your dog is painful for the lifestyle you want your dog to lead, despite conservative management (including pain management) then you should consider surgical intervention. Radiographs on dogs with hip dysplasia very dramatically and they do not necessarily correlate with pain. So we always have to look at the patient. If you are considering having a hip replacement performed I would strongly recommend finding a board certified surgeon with experience and training in total hip arthroplasty. Ideally with at least a few years of experience in hip replacement surgery. You may want to ask how many they are performing per year. An average of 1 per month is enough to keep skills up. Lastly, make sure you ask about complication rate and what complications they have experienced. If they have never experienced a complication then I would worry they have not done enough hip replacements. Best of luck with your dog.

My cat was diagnosed with ibd after she had a pancreatitis about two years ago. They put her on royal canine gastrointestinal wet food since and other then occasional soft stools I’d add fortiflora to her food to regulate, everything is fine. However she 11.5 now and the fortiflora is starting to lose affect and I don’t wanna put her on cortisone. Can I put tumeric for cats in her food? It’s a natural anti inflammatory and I’d think it would help wouldn’t it? Tia

I had 2 cats, approx age 14. They were litter mates. For 3 years, one battled Pancreatitis while the other one battled some kind of allergy and licked half his fur off. They were BOTH put on Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein Kibble and Royal Canin PR canned food for a year and a half. The one with Pancreatitis developed Triaditis and got so sick he had to be put to sleep. Now, his brother has IBD and has lost significant weight and has developed a heart murmer but is negative for diabetes, kidney disease, and Hyperthyroidism. In MY OPINION, BOTH of my cats have suffered greatly from astronomically expensive Prescription pet food that has done them absolutely NO GOOD and MAY have harmed them. I have had cats ALL of my 64 years and have NEVER had a cat with these issues, much less two of them. Something is waco in the pet food industry when IBD and Pancreatitis is becoming common among DOGS AND CATS. I wish someone could figure it out.

good you figured that one out. I think vets are additionally motivated to prescribe those foods by the companies. My cat had IBD, tried it all, then got her on raw freeze dried food, and since then---No Issues whatsoever!!!!

My cat was constipated and my vet said she had IBD so I switched her to Instinct wet food. I couldn’t find anymore because of COVID so I asked my vet if he sold that type and if not would he sell me some of his food. He said he wouldn’t suggest his food because it would upset her stomach and I should switch her back to her original Iams kibble.

My dog almost stopped eating all together. Her protein level was very low on blood tests. I tried Orijen Freeze-Dried raw and she ate this immediately. Her diarrhea stopped right away. She started prednisone 2.5 mg at the same time but I think the food is helping a lot. She is starting to lose the belly fluid now too.

Does IBD occur with GERD? My dog has been having frequent nausea episodes after eating (occurs sometimes after she eats, but not always- she sometimes vomits during an episode, but not always). Her vet has mentioned IBD or GERD as possibilities because she has symptoms that could be both
@Luarabello1
@Luarabello1 2 жыл бұрын
My dog has been experiencing the same. He is on antiacid for the GERD but his symptoms persist. He is bloated, nauseous, lip licking, diarrhea with a lot of mucus and fatigue. At this point I guess IBD is either co-occuring with GERD or the reflux symptoms are being caused by the intestine’s inflammation.

My dog has been thru biopsi and it confirmed IBD. However the meds were not working so we changed the vet. Now the 2nd vet instead of treatment is going for more n more tests to ensure its not lukemia or something. Few other vets are saying it's wrong he needs to be treated for IBD. My dog has lost a lot of weight and not recovering at all. Prednisone and rantac are the only meds given also he is kept nil by mouth for 7 days loosing all his energy. There is friend who suggested another vet and as per him sulfasalazine, Prednisone and surcafil are enough to start treatment with some probiotics and supplements. I am looking forward to ur advice

My Maddi (currently 10 lbs and turning 10 in Dec.) had bad diarrhea and did throw up numerous times. She was diagnosed with IBD but the Dr. also called it PLE (Protein Losing Enteropathy) on Oct. 29, 2021. She had 2 Plasma Transfussions and they took out 33 oz of liquid out of her stomach. She is on Predizone 10mg, Clopidigrel 75mg and (Visbome probiotic and Metronidazole which she just got off on) . She lost close to 2 lbs but does love the new food she is on. Her new food is Purina Pro Plan HA Hydrolyzed vegetarian formula and some snack crackers hydrolyzed. She gets absolutely nothing else. She no longer has diarrhea or vomiting. She acts like she is not sick. MY QUESTION: The Dr. said due to her problem her quality of life will be lessoned and shorter. Does this mean I have to worry that any day she could leave me? Please be straight with me about her life. I'm somewhat confused about her problems and scared for her.
