THE best Western no one knows about is, IMO, the 1966 Masterpiece by director /producer Ralph Nelson, " DUEL AT DIABLO " . James Garner in a straight dramatic role------Sidney Poitier playing an ex Army scout-------Dennis Weaver as the villain --------Swedish actress Bibi Anderson ---------British actor Bill Travers--------all combine for one of my all-time Top 10 Westerns ever made.------------------------MJL, 78 y/o

My personal favorites are They Were Expendable and The Searchers instead of Young Mr. Lincoln and My Darling Clementine. I think Abe Lincoln in Illinois is a much better in-depth film about Lincoln's pre-presidential life. My Darling Clementine in my view has too many superfluous characters, woeful historical inaccuracies and a weak half-hearted town setting with only Victor Mature's great performance keeping it from being a complete dud.

Maybe ~ Last train from gun hill~ Kirk Douglas, Anthony Quinn, good story.

Too bad Bogart never made a film with Hitchcock. In A Lonely Place would have been my candidate for that collaboration.

Il avait un jeu d'acteur très éclectique, il etait inclassable, le duo avec Gary Cooper dans "Vera Cruz " est resté......légendaire !

You undermine yourself somewhat with the poor pronunciation of French names. It's not "Elaine" Delon. And "Jean", as you pronounce it, is a man's name, which is different from "Jeanne" (a woman's name). You can look up these pronunciations online.

Excellent choices plus mentioning Sweet Smell of Sucess. Burt Lancaster made so many fine films it is hard to narrow them down to a Top 10 or more. 🤔The Leopard was filmed without dialogue which was to be added later. Lancaster dubs his own voice for the film's American version released in 1963 by 20th Century Fox. Sadly, the Italian version which is the most prevalent today his voice is dubbed by a different actor. 😔

He was making the Leopard in Paris. He flew to Washington to speak at the march on Washington, gave his speech, the took a cab back to the airport and flew immediately back to Paris. I was always impressed by that. I loved watching him - so macho and good lookking.

I would add his 1962 film, Lonely Are The Brave. His performance in it is a tour de force and the movie was actually his personal favorite too. His son, Michael, would even make a later film, Falling Down, that shares many thematic elements with it. Kirk Douglas was a master of explosive acting. I'd say he(alongside Burt Lancaster & James Cagney) pioneered & perfected that intense acting style that you would later see in the likes of of many great actors after them(Jack Nicholson comes to mind, who coincidentally played the character in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest that Kirk Douglas originated on the stage first). This was a fantastic list. Kirk Douglas definitely is one of the greats!

SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS is a key 50s film & others not listed here but deserving of attention are KISS OF DEATH, FORCE OF EVIL & OUT OF THE PAST. All these are great noirs as are many of the others listed here. How about IN A LONELY PLACE, one of Bogart‘s greatest characterizations on the level of his Fred C. Dobbs.
@petergraham8681Ай бұрын
Most of these here are especially fine Ford films but I cannot put THE SEARCHERS on the same level which. I realize is a minority opinion. Wayne‘s performance here though may be his best in a Ford film but the movies racism & all too typically inane humor compromises it’s better moments such as an early revealing & beautifully understated scene between Wayne, Dorothy Jordan, & Ward Bond. A better Ford western, IMO, remains SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON.
@petergraham8681Ай бұрын
I will say to the viewer seek out one of Lancaster‘s best films & most unusual characterizations: SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS. This is also a key Hollywood film of the 50s & definitely deserves to be on your list. The other films listed here are all notable achievements as well & THE LEOPARD especially.
