I'm not sure what you do think of them but you should maybe review some of the older, classic pomades like Dax Wave and Groom and Royal Crown Pomade (NOT THE HAIRDRESSING), and if you want something a bit more safer, try the Pinaud Clubman Styling Gel! I use that stuff very frequently and it smells amazing, and it doesn't make hair feel overly hard, it has castor oil in it and when you wash it out, your hair feels amazingly soft!

This is the most old fashioned scent I have ever smelled before. This scent is exactly what I imagined most everyone smelled like at the turn of the 20th century. It's not my cup of tea, but I wanted to buy, and sample all of Pinaud Clubman scents, so I bought it at my local barber/wig supply store. Just when you thought Pinaud Clubman Special Reserve smelled old fashioned, Lilac Vegetal knocks Special Reserve out of the park! Lilac Vegetal is not one to wear on a night out at the club, I can assure you of that, and I love old fashioned scents!

I am 55 with all of my thin white hair intact. Luckily the hairline has not receded😅. I shower in the AM and in the PM I spray my hair with water and a little Clubman hair tonic to comb out the JS Sloane pomaded in my hair. For my morning shower I use Clubman Shampoo for 4 days with each shower doing 2 lathers/rinses and then letting a 3rd lather sit on my hair while I wash up the rest of my body. Then (at least in the summer) for the other 3 days of the week I use Woody's Shampoo (a nice orange citrus scent) with Woody's Menthol Conditioner (separate bottle). In the Fall/Winter I will keep the Clubman in rotation and use Old Spice Swagger (Scent of Cedarwood) Shampoo and Conditioner separate in place of Woody's.

How often would you recommend somebody with curly/way hair to use shampoo? Right now I use conditioner everyday and twice a week I'll shampoo. I also use Jeris (without oil) hair tonic daily as my styling product.
@classicalgrooming
@classicalgrooming 28 күн бұрын
That's a tough call, because I don't know how long your hair is, how much oil your scalp makes, or how dirty your hair gets from your job/daily activities. If you find your hair to be manageable (you're able to get the style that you want) relatively soft and clean to the touch (and smell), then twice a week is fine. I'm guessing the conditioner is a spray-on? Wash-in conditioner every day would seem a little overkill to me, but every head of hair is different.
@CNJRailfan
@CNJRailfan 28 күн бұрын
@@classicalgrooming My hair is about 3 inches long on top and tapered short on the sides. It never gets oily or dirty. Also the conditioner is a wash-in one. How often should wash-in conditioner be used?
@classicalgrooming
@classicalgrooming 28 күн бұрын
@@CNJRailfan Wash-in conditioner is generally used to smooth out the hair follicle after a shampoo. So the rule of thumb is only after shampooing your hair, which in your case is 2x week. Your experience may vary.

I have only tried the Clubman Hair Tonic and I now only use it as a bedtime application to break up and comb through the matte cream (JS Sloane) that I use during the day. I found that if I applied it in the morning after my shower AND at night before bed, that it would dry my scalp and it would break out in blemishes. I do love the scent? Maybe I could use it as a body splash? 🤣

The greesy kid stuff your using on your hair is the reason why your breaking out in blemishes. Why not go for a week or two, maybe three and use only the hair loation on every other day hair washings, then see if your blemishes clear up. When you find that the greesy kid stuff is the culprit, then you'll know to either use much less, or use it on a every other week intervals or only use the hair loation once a week. That's what they are suppose to be used for, always remember, a little goes a long way.

It’s a shame that the Eau de Quinine does not contain Quinine as it did originally. The Quinines primary use was probably as an antiseptic since people didn’t tend to wash their hair as often back in the 1800s and early 1900s but despite the science not being discovered at that time Quinine is shown to be good for Hair growth and stimulates Blood flow in the scalp. I’m guessing it is a cost cutting measure to not include quinine but it is a shame and a bit disingenuous considering the name of the product. Would make a good alternative to using other scalp stimulating hair products such as caffeine shampoo. It smells great too.

Great explanation of these products. I have been using them for a couple of years and I like to apply them out of the shower to kind of get any residual product or oil out of my scalp before I apply styling product, usually a hair oil or pomade. One note I should mention, on the Pinaud site, there is a warning that the Quinine version is not recommended for lighter hair colors. My hair is the same color as yours and I just ignored the warning. By the time I got around to my next haircut, my barber said "Are you dyeing your hair pink now?" I said "No." But he held up a mirror to my scalp and sure enough, my hair was a very pale shade of pink. So, I switched to the Portugal and my hair is back to normal. 9 out of 10 times these days I go Shower - Pinaud Eau de Portugal - Gabel's Rose Hair Oil. Cheers! -Scott

Can you put hair tonic in the hair and then use a blow dryer to dry the hair ?
@smartin5534

@@BeautyofScent I prefer Eau de Portugal because it is a clean scent which is great right out of the shower. Although I love the scents of the Original and Quinine, they wear slightly more as a fragrance to me. As opposed to Portugal which I feel is citrus-y, but neutral enough that I can use other fragrances with it and they won't clash. Like a Pinaud Lime Sec or something.

I decant into glass bottles I get at Walmart Neighborhood Market. I use the Spice, Blue Spice and Coachman a lot and really like them. For the pennies these guys cost, you can't go wrong. 100% agree with you on the first two. The Bay Rum and Dragon Noir are not worth the time or money. If you want to throw a couple others into the mix that are distributed by Clubman, the Jeris Musk and Osage Rub are a couple of sleepers that are also pennies and work fab.

Regarding the corn starch instead of powder...maybe it was talc back in the day until it was realized that talc was extracted from the same minerals as asbestos?
