Regarding your critzicism that Horatio and Gertrude are hardly ever mentioned by name in the movie: Neither is Claudius in the play. Like, not at all. So there ;-)

I think the difference is that Claudius, mentioned by name or not, serves the same important purpose. When they aren't mentioned by name in the movie, and they have such small roles to begin with, it puts into question their importance. They serve a significant role in the play, but they aren't doing much in this movie-the fact that they aren't even addressed by name makes them seem even more pointless.

My biggest problem with modern BD cases is that they break if you look at them wrong, while good old early 2000s DVD cases, you could really harm someone with them or steamroll on them, and they'd just laugh at you! Not even starting with the disgusting oily plastics in some cases these days. The durable DVD cases were made to replace the fragile jewel cases CDs used to ship with but now we are back to having fragile cases again because some eco activists made sure we can't use proper durable plastics to make them anymore, instead we have this fragile oily stuff. I hate it.

Great, entertaining video. One criticism puzzles me though. You don't see why Claudius would want to be head of a corporation? CEOs have power and wealth, sometimes equivalent to the king of a country. Additionally, although it's never outright stated in the play, we can infer that Gertrude and Claudius were carrying on an affair prior to the murder of King Hamlet, no?
@LaughOutLamdaddy
@LaughOutLamdaddy 8 ай бұрын
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! It's been a while since I've wrote and edited this (if some of the jankier editing didn't make that obvious), but as far as why I said I don't see why Claudius would want to be a CEO, it's probably because I don't necessarily see a CEO as the equivalent of a king. Both involve power and politics, sure, but a CEO doesn't have the outright power that a ruler of a country would. Also, while the focus of the story isn't what Claudius intends to do as a CEO (or a king in the play), I do think it's fair to ask why he wants this position, especially since it involves overseeing a business (and because the parts of the play foreshadowing Fortinbras' takeover are omitted, which on paper gives them extra time to address this). As far as the Claudius/Gertrude affair, I think the play better hints at this (or even Branagh's film) just by the way those two act around each other; in this 2000 film, I don't think they share enough chemistry to insinuate that they were in a relationship that started before "King" Hamlet's death.
@jonathanlivingston5627
@jonathanlivingston5627 8 ай бұрын
@@LaughOutLamdaddy I agree with you that Branagh's film is superior (though not close to as good as Olivier's or Kozintsev's imo) Most of your criticisms are on point. And to be fair, I haven't watched the Almereyda film for a few years, though I do use certain scenes on KZbin to show differences in interpretation for the Brit lit classes I teach. I do certainly remember it being clunky and a relatively poor adaptation, but otoh I appreciate what it's trying to do. Like I love the idea of the Blockbuster soliloquy, but in practice, in the film, it does not work at all.

@LaughOutLamdaddy
@LaughOutLamdaddy 8 ай бұрын
@@jonathanlivingston5627 I had no idea Hawke and Almereyda made another Shakespeare adaptation! I briefly looked it up, and it certainly doesn't seem up my alley (I also haven't read the original play), but it seems like Almereyda is at least updating the language for the most part. One of my biggest issues with "Hamlet 2000" was that the Shakespeare dialogue seemed too out-of-place in regular ol' New York (without any stylization à la Baz Luhrmann), so he seems to have at least taken that into consideration.

Twice Upon is better than any Disney movie. It contains far more appeal than any of that tired, insipid, Disney tripe. And it was done with a willing and excited crew, as opposed to the environment in the Disney studios, which was pure drudgery, with forced overtime. By far my favorite scene was the office nightmare.

I remember recording the Cartoon Network airing on VHS as a kid cuz I thought it looked really cool but would be airing when I could watch it.. Probably well over a decade later I tred to get info about the movie and hopefully watch it again. Sadly the only thing I remembered about the movie was it having a really unique art style, vaguely something about a spring and the ending credits that read "Mum as himself" it probably took me a year to finally find the title of the movie by just going through a massive list of animated movies. But I was so excited to finally be able to watch it again after so long! It's a really unique film and definitely worth a watch. It's a shame that its production was so troubled, far worse than I ever realized. Thanks for putting this together!

At the time, we were taking classes with John Prusak, who taught many animators in the Detroit area, including Doug Chiang and Dan Scanlon. In one of our clay animations, we even had our “copy” of ratatooey. I really want to find a digital copy of this film! Ushers were basically in charge of the hospitality aspect (clean, sweep, restock).

Saw it, loved it, but I'm glad I quit the bay area film scene. Everybody in film in the 70s and late 80s thought they were more important than anything else, and the artsy look of this film reminds me of the repressive and condescending feel of the people and industry as it stood in the Bay Area at that time. It's a fun little animated film, but film makers at that time were typically hyper liberal to a fault, and the B&W photos and long hair remind me of those time.

I saw this film as a one-off screening at the NFT big screen in London right at the beginning of 1984, when I’d just turned 16. I thought it was great, and all the kids at the screening seemed to like it too, laughing and calling out in places.
@LaughOutLamdaddy
@LaughOutLamdaddy Жыл бұрын
Oh, wow, that's awesome to have seen it as a screening, especially one around the time it was originally released! Its theatrical rollout was notoriously limited, so it's cool to hear that there was a somewhat sizable audience. I'm sure the filmmakers would have been delighted to hear that a wide age range (at least kids to teens) enjoyed it.
@jonathanmelia
@jonathanmelia Жыл бұрын
The only time the kids seemed bored was when there was the pop ballad in the middle, a curiously ‘80s thing. And here’s a fun fact, some of the script was worked on by the English playwright Peter Barnes, who wrote the 1968 anti-establishment play THE RULING CLASS (turned into a film starring Peter O’Toole in 1971). I had lunch with him in 1989 and he said “I make bits of money working on comedy films.” “Such as?” “I worked on this fantasy thing called Twice Upon a Time.” “I said, “You’re kidding! I’ve seen it! Synonymous Botch and the nightmare bombs!” “I can’t remember the plot...but...how on earth did you get to see it? I thought it never got released...”

Also be mindful of finite, which can bite physical media/hardware but a huge advantage for physical media is in fact dumping the disc into your PC to be preserved forever and be watched freely without certain slowness that has to be read by the disc that has to be spinned compared to data that's read immediately. Something I didn't point out with the "King of Queens" season set (not the series one) was that it not only came with a pamphlet saying which discs had which episodes, but also had a little synopsis underneath each title. I know some releases come in clear DVD cases so they can tell you the episodes on the interior artwork instead. Old Nick VHS/DVDs used to provide the titles and synopsis of each episode on the back cover, which was great too. It's disappointing that episode guides aren't the norm for every season or complete series release, regardless of the company putting them out. I'm surprised the "Rocko" set didn't come with one (I assume it's the Shout! Factory release, a company that's usually pretty comprehensive with their releases).
