Good respectful job by Old Crow of this old song. John Hewitt's sentimental Victorian parlor song melody still resonates well over 100 years later. The yahoos in the audience with their "yee-haws" yelling in this clip didn't hear or understand the nostalgic lyrics, relating to age. OCMS did well to keep them under control. Although the song is propaganda for an ante-bellum South that never existed, (the lyric narrated by a slave, y'all), it is of its time. And a beautiful lyric wedded to a longing melody.

Nice description and thanks for giving credit to Hewitt. (I'm tired of this being called traditional by lazy people.) This song belongs to a genre I call Southern Morose Sentimental, so no Yee-Haws, y'all.
