I clicked on this video so fast! Anyway, you've got me asking the question- is the ever present use of coins in video games due to the social cachet of Mario (specifically one, two and three) or is it a kind of rat-brain shortcut? When I think about collection-mania, the worst offender is the Diablo series. In that series, gold coins are ubiquitous, except that you encounter more of them the farther you progress. I have a seemingly inexplicable desire to collect these coins even when I know (and it can be mathematically proven) that collecting them is so ineffectual to game progression as to be useless. I don't think the things that are desirable to us as gamers, and as humans, can be reduced to what is "effective". Games with a darker bent go in the casino direction and intentionally obscure the actual effectiveness of the rat-brain collection mechanic, to keep us pulling the lever as long as possible. In my experience with Mario, it never seemed to matter what the score was or if there was an unlock, the coins were desirable just because they were there. And I knew that if I collected them, I'd get to hear that sweet sweet sound, and see the number go up.

howdy! loving the reviews of these films - they were the cornerstone of my gay teen awakening years! Just want to point out a small correction; though I suppose it is equally problematic for its own reasons. At @3:56 you say the reference to wanting to 'hit Tina' is problematic due to domestic abuse, but I actually think to "hit Tina" is a reference to drugs, specifically Crystal Meth. I realise this was uploaded 2 years ago, so may have been pointed out to you by now, but just wanted to throw in my 2 cents! Do you have any plans to finish off the series by reviewing the 5th one, open weekend? :D

I don't understand that they are clapping when they lose

Just watched this film last night and remembered it wasn't as good as the others... although the reasons I didn't like it seem to be quite different from yours! Just so I can kid myself that someone cares what I think, I'm going to enumerate them 1. It's supposed to be a comedy, but the only one with any sense of comic timing at all (outside the sainted Rebekah Kochan's four minutes) is Penny. It's like someone read the script and said "you need some comedy. Try to shoehorn in a comic character". She plays it well but never actually seems to have anything to do with what little plot there is. 2. The trans character, as you say, also feels like a bit of an afterthought, but also I find her totally annoying. It's like her motto is "everything you say or do is stupid and wrong, everything I say or do is perfect and right", and she seems to have zero understanding that Jason might just have some internal conflict to work through, quite apart from being apparently quite a shy sort of person. It's a massive disappointment at the end when he just goes for her without saying something like "look, batch, we all have our own issues and I only met you five days ago". What a sap. Unlike you I'm afraid I also found her acting the least convincing of all of them. 3. Just a really weak storyline. Was there actually a storyline? Not much going on. Lastly - that bit you point out where Zack and Benji are on stage and not getting into the kissing, minutes after Zack has split up with Casey - it was the only bit of the film that showed any real sign of delicacy and reality to me, where motivations did ring true. He's just split up with his boyfriend who obviously wanted the relationship to continue, seemed a bit ambivalent about the whole thing ("Does that hurt my feelings? Yes.... No...") and then five minutes later, if he doesn't feel a bit awkward getting it on with the immediate cause of the break-up I would call that... pretty ice-cold. Or, perhaps psychopathic.
