If available, I'm sure a molded gasket from the likes of Fel-Pro, which is designed to fit more closely, would have increased your chances of success. Cork seems to be more successful on flat surfaces like valve covers. And in those cases, no adhesive of any kind is recommended. I have seen some people also have success with your eventual change to straight RTV. Thanks for the update.

okay, engine and has a major leak in front and rear of pan at first start. Had to remove pan and use gray RTV (that I said did not seem right). Oh well, need to be honest so you do not make the same mistake. Also did this with engine in and it went well with no hitches. Hope this helps.(I think pan sided bend up over time and when reinstalling there is not enough pressure in front and back where there are no bolts). Just a guess

I’m just staring down the barrel of my ‘71, and I’m almost sure my major leakage is from the front of the oil pan. ( it wouldn’t be a big leak from the flywheel would it? It’s hard to tell) So if it’s front of oil pan, new gasket WITH rtv sealant? I’m no auto mechanic guy.🙄
