Saying “the message isn’t clear” is funny to me, that means you heard the song and didn’t listen. To provide context this is when, as anyone who has LISTENED to this song knows, the BLM “movements” (some call them protests, personally it was nothing short of a riot and absolutely disgusting.) were happening. People of color were offended and hurt that they thought a policeman killed George Floyd, which is untrue if you do even 30 seconds of research, and reacted in a way that the whole world saw and if you’re reading this you have your own opinion on it. In response to those riots, Jason Aldean spoke what was on his mind which is the beauty of a song. It’s freedom of expression and I felt the message was pretty clear, in a small town people take care of there own and if you feel like you need to protest to make yourself heard to feed an illusion that in 2024 there is still segregation and that one race is oppressed over another then feel free to do so. Just don’t get violent or people in a small town will respond in order to protect their own. Pretty cut and dry to me.

Ya'll gotta remember that cole is a whole 40 year old man. A lot of these lines go over young people's heads b/c the references came from our childhood. Dad really is invaluable when breaking down certain lyrics.

As a bi-racial man, I can assure you that there are NO residual benefits from slavery. We have also institutionalized (the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution's Equal Protection Clause) discrimination in our government. We have EEO and Affirmative Action (which actually gives black people MORE rights than white people). We have systems in place SPECIFICALLY to give black people preferential hiring, admission to college, etc. Now, my story: I was raised in a very poor neighborhood. Like I said, I am bi-racial, born in 1974. I had a grandmother who was not only raised in Nazi Germany, but also attended Hitler Youth Camp, and was VERY racist; in fact she used to call me, "that nigger kid," and constantly reminded me that my dad is black. When I say I have experienced racism first hand, I mean just that. I joined the Navy, earned an honorable discharge, got out, went to college with the Navy College Fund and Gi Bill, got a BA in Economics, an MBA, AND an MPA. The odds were stacked against me as I was raised in a single parent home and my "dad" was no where to be found. I mention this so no one tries to spin it. I have attained success in life through hard work and perseverance. Now, you may say that it was harder for me because of my skin color, my hair, etc., but that does not explain why my WHITE brother had the same struggles. If you want success, you NEED TO PUT IN THE WORK and not expect everything to be handed to you because of your race. Finally, those who were not alive have no responsibility to make up for any of it. Pull up your big girl panties and take responsibility for your own situation, don't play the victim card, you're only a victim if you see yourself AS a victim.
