Great wagons these were. Great looking inside and out, too. A neighbor had a light blue one way back then. It was commonly full of neighborhood kids going i don't know where.

Yes, rustproofing was virtually unheard of back the, and highway departments were getting aggressive spreading salt on winter ice coated roads. Cars in the rust belt usually lasted only about 3 years without major rust appearing. That was my experience! Thanks! :) Jack

In the late 50s Ford introduced the Ranchero on the full size Ford station wagon chassis, moved to the compact Falcon, and later to the midsize Fairlane such as this one. I couldn’t argue with your assertion that this version is very attractive, especially compared to today’s overly large and overpriced pickup trucks.
@coolridesКүн бұрын
Great point....the Ranchero evolved into a very stylish and useful vehicle, inexpensive to buy, feed and maintain! Suitable for most light hauling purposes....but no, Detroit decided that we needed an elephant to pick up a straw. Because they can charge obscene prices for those elephants! That's my take on the situation! Thanks! :) Jack

Good points about centre lane hoggers, or left lane hoggers, but I rather suspect with that muscle car, the big sign on the front is meant to intimidate, in the "GET OUT OF THE WAY, I'M COMIN' THRU!" kind of way.

I don't know whether you get them in the USA but in Europe we've got a Ford crossover, Fiesta based I think, called the 'Kuga'. The name always amused me.
@coolrides2 күн бұрын
Hey, Mick! Cougar is very much American here, all mechanicals based on Mustang, and made a first appearance in 1967 after its sister car appeared in early 1965. Later it was based on the Thunderbird. Thanks! :) Jack
@rx6180Күн бұрын
I have to offer an amendment to my description of the ‘Kuga’ being based on a Fiesta platform - this morning I walked past a Ford ‘Puma’ crossover parked ahead of a Fiesta, and they had about the same footprint. So I think the ‘Kuga’ crossover is based on the slightly larger Focus platform. Such is the confusing myriad of hatches, crossovers and SUVs offered by car makers now. No wonder Haynes gave up making repair manuals based on the strip down of a complete vehicle - there are far too many permutations

I find myself slightly aghast that the police have now adopted the pick up truck as their vehicle of choice just like most other people. I wonder if it will make high speed pursuits shorter? Since the roll over factor due to a higher centre of gravity compared to a sedan must surely either slow things down or bring things to a conclusion quicker!
@coolrides2 күн бұрын
Hey, Mick! Although the police here do use pickups, I think the vast majority of their vehicles are large SUV's or Dodge Chargers. Since Chargers aren't made any more, I suspect the fleet will be almost all Ford and Chevy SUVs. Thanks! :) Jack

I would hazard a guess those big orange turn signals are stuck on or magnetised to the tail gate, and possibly operated by radio signals rather than wired. They aren't the neatest looking solution I've seen to incorporating turn signals on a vehicle that didn't originally have them, but they are certainly a good idea for driving in traffic.
@coolrides2 күн бұрын
Hey, Mick! If they do operate wirelessly, that's a boon to restorers who aim to improve safety! Turn signals are a must, unless we go back to arm signals (which I don't think younger drivers have a clue about)! Thanks! :) Jack

This is an interesting one. Britain never had a Toyota Aristo. However I can tell you we, and Europe, got the Lexus GS300, which is the exact same car! Model code S160.
