Sounds like a fun project, but a lot of welding. Are you going to build a steel tube framework for the body to replace the wood the termites took?

Yes mate. The lower half will be using the inner structure of the donor, but all new frame work for the upper.

I thought the Hot Rod Willys was super cool. This is going to eclipse that!! Great job of documenting and sharing your vision which I'm sure will evolve as you get into it! Just reviewed everything on your blog. You really are remarkable Marcus. Your ability to do everything from full understanding of all the electronics to perfect body work and fabrication is amazing. I really look forward to watching your progress. I chuckled at one comment and knew he hadn't checkout what you did with the truck!

What an awesome way to salvage a "hopeless" car that most wouldn't bother with. I like the concept a lot, though I would add length to the bonnet panels and stretch the front fenders just ahead of their join with the running boards as you raise them. Please tell me you will build a custom dash / instrument panel for this !! It would be a shame to look inside such a cool gangster custom and see a modern plastic I.P. I have a 1927 Hudson Super Six two door with a nearly 130" wheel base that I have been planning out and gathering parts for the last 15 years. While it doesn't need near as many mods to get the right proportions, and the original chassis is massive compared with this Willys, your project is exciting !! My Hudson is receiving a Cummins 12 valve 6BT 5.9 from a Dodge, which fits beautifully in the massive chassis. Even the downpipe off the turbo follows the factory exhaust clearance pressing in the stock Hudson firewall!! With just a slight pancake to the roof and 4" lowering of the ride height all round, It will still look very close to stock with just a wee bit of attitude. The running boards will be 5" off the ground and that's about my limit, as It will be my everyday car. Thanks for sharing his excellent project !!
@Gojeep
@Gojeep 3 күн бұрын
Having your wheelbase would be much better for this project for sure considering the donor. I'll end up around 123" wheelbase close to the 8-88 model Willys Overland. This too will be the daily so you build to suit that so it remains practical. I think 5" clearance I will shoot for too. Let me know when you start your build.
@timmcooper294

@@Gojeep Yes, this Hudson has to cruise comfortably long distance on the Interstate highways across America, and be a reliable daily driver. The trouble with the long wheelbase is that it imposes practical limits on ride height. I think 5" will get me in and out of driveways, and over speed bumps, though I will likely add a few skid plates just in case !! This car will rack up serious miles as my primary car (I'm in my mid 50's and am set in my ways.... though there's nothing wrong with automatics I won't own anything that doesn't have three pedals as I like to physically drive my vehicles). My newest vehicle is a 1958 Land Rover that looks completely stock but has a modern Chevy LS V8 under the bonnet. I drive it all over the western USA to various famous 4WD trails, beat the crap out of it, and drive it home at speeds the old Rover company never imagined !!

So good to see a proper Hemi engine installed. My personal favourite Chrysler is the 1956 version of 354 cubes. My own Hemi is the 1957 Dodge of 325 cubes. It fits my 1933 Dodge without cutting anything & weighs less. I'm running everything trad, including dual Carter AFB's. It's gotta be a Hemi if you want to do it right.

YT's logarithm led me here - interesting project, don't think I ever saw another one of those done like that. My 2c: leave the wheelbase as it is and call it done, that body style does not need anything (I would not have even chopped it), it's perfect as it is, and you're looking at TONS of extra work and time.
@Gojeep
@Gojeep 4 күн бұрын
Will remain un-chopped most likely I think but the stretch is needed. This is the wife's project so going to be built for how she wants to use it. I spent 11 years building the Willys Truck, and love the work side of it. :)

Many cars were imported as a CKD "chassis" which was the whole car, in pieces, in crates [pre containers remember] & assembled at the distributors workshops. They would be complete minus the actual body from the firewall back. This was supplied by the contracted body builder. There were plenty of body builders at first, but by the early 1930's only a few were still in business. Holden was absorbed by GM, & TJ Richards was absorbed by Chrysler, & these made bodies for anyone who placed a volume order & who had the means to pay for them. Your Willys was likely made by one of these as this coach built construction was used by both until the mid '30's. In many instances, the Aussie version differed from the US model in small ways for economic reasons & your bonnet/hood may actually be the previous years model, ... perhaps. EDIT. All of the above was written before the video got to your paperwork, so you already know much of the above.

That fuel system isn't is complicated as you believe. Part of the output of the pump runs the jet pump, which draws fuel over from the secondary side. When the secondary side is empty, it draws air. Completely mechanical, no computer control at all, and it picks up any fuel that sloshes over around half tank, which a computer controlled system wouldn't do. Also cheaper than a pump on each side. Good luck with the project!

Great progress Marcus. So I want to understand the direction you are heading. Are you grafting in the firewall from the SRT into the Willys? Are you grafting on the suspension bits to the Willys frame also? Or is this going to be a Willys body swap onto the SRT floor?
@Gojeep
@Gojeep 29 күн бұрын
The SRT8 firewall and floor will be grafted to the Willys chassis rails. So nothing forward of the firewall will be used from the SRT8, or from the back of the rear wheel arch rearward, as no need for a boot. All the rear suspension will be used, but none from the front. Just like I did with the Willys Truck just finished.

It was classed a repairable write off which means there was no structural damage, but cost more in new parts, paint and labour than it was insured for.

Funny as I have always hated the tall narrow grille on this model and why I wouldn't have chosen it. :D I also need the extra width to fit a wide enough radiator to cool the HEMI as well as fit all the things needed in the engine bay. Bravo....you've saved an obscure automotive relic! This is a very complete example, which will make life a little easier. I own a 1928 Falcon Knight 4 door which lived in the back of a warehouse since 1948, and was robbed of any usable parts after being discovered by Willys club members...so theres not much left. But I started to restore it, getting the body rust dipped and re-doing the wood with red oak. After 5 years, still trying to find a parts car or parts, I had no choice but to make it a hot rod, and that was 10 years ago. Parts for these cars are non-existant. I live in Detroit Michigan, U.S.A., In the heart of "the rust belt', Where not much survives past 20 years. I've gathered you're in Australia with Holden , right hand drive and all. Best of luck...I'll be watching.

@Gojeep Hi! No, not a log person, but I took ALOT of pictures so I'd know what went where, and how the wood fit, etc. Not sure how your body is constructed, but mine is a wooden skeleton with steel nailed over it. (Bronze serrated boat nails!) Took almost a year to find the nails and I live on the Great Lakes with boat shops everywhere! Yours is the first Willy's of that year I've seen, and quite interesting. Good Luck on your Project...you've got your work cut out for you. And save any and all parts you don't use...the boys in the WOKR will snap them up!
