Hullo Elvie, I enjoyed seeing your "sketchbook" Do you find it funny that people call a book of paintings sketches? or that so many people put paintings in a collection in a "sketchbook"? I remember when I purchased my first workbook for paintings. I went to our local store (when we still had one) and asked the counter person for the workbook they use at the college, as this is what my Gran told me to go ask for. She laughed at me and said your a little young to be in college aren't ya? I might have been 14, before this my Gran had always cut down sheets for me to work on. She wanted me to gather my work together and show her my "practice drills" brush work and other techniques she was teaching me. Well I got the workbook, they make a similar one over at Cheap Joe's here in the U.S. They use their Kilimanjaro paper and use thin paper to separate the sheets, It was $4.50 I believe the same thing is now $26.29 it is called a Watercolor Paintbook and has 20 sheets of each The use Kilimanjaro Natural White Watercolor Paper and 70 LB drawing paper. I think the old book used tracing paper between the watercolor papers. Well I doubt you have a Cheap Joe's in New Zealand, but maybe they have a similar product. Needles to say I quickly ran out of money and my Gran showed me how to fold full sheets into workbooks using the Copic stitch for the binding. I do enjoy your videos and I just wanted to say Thanks for posting today.

It defiantly is quite funny they're all paintings in a sketchbook. I tend to call them studies as individual work. Watercolour paper and books are personally the best thing to spend the extra $ on, makes such a difference and honestly makes the painting so much more enjoyable. So glad you enjoyed the video:)

Great painting, great video. Have the Holbein watercolor and gouache. Enjoy both of them. They are easy to use. Use Holbein and Turner design gouache at the moment. Also I have no problems anymore to add a color from another company to a brand. Like the ultramarine blue and yellow. I just add one nice cool yellow and ultramarine from another brand that I have and then I decide if I would like to have the colors from Holbein or not. Have had no problems so far. Thank you so much for showing.

Hullo Elvie, I have always thought that seeing companies charge more for HUE's make me a bit angry! They are not using the actual pigments! These paints should cost much less than the full pigmented paints! I have purchased the Holbein Artists grade 5 Primary mixing gouache set. I just am not sure if I would spend money on hue's. Have you noticed a big difference? Do you have any full pigment paints to compare them with? I noticed a big difference in W&N paints when comparing the hue to full pigment paints. I have used some "hue" paints where the original pigments are no longer available or are to toxic to use. Like DaVici's Vermilion Red is now a hue as the original pigment is simply no longer available and they cannot call it just plain Vermilion. I think it still looks like the orange-red I remember, but our memories can be fooled! Thanks for sharing your experience with us, you managed a lovely painting and I would like to see more of the process, maybe next time.
@ElviesArt

I don't mind painting with the hue variant and the set it self was quite affordable so I'm not too surprised about the hues. I only use them in sketchbooks not paintings I will sell just because of the multiple pigments in it. Definitely not as clean to mix with compared to high quality single pigment colours.

Thank you very much! I switch between brands all the time as I use it up, and its got a range of professional and student grade paints. At the time I had Lemon Yellow and phthalo Blue (GS) (Winsor and Newton Cotman), Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine Blue (M. Graham), Phthalo Green (BS) (Mungyo), Hansa Yellow Medium (Daniel Smith) and the Retro Red colour by Schmincke :))

Hullo Elvie, I almost purchased this set of paints just to get the "Anniversary collection". I believe they launched this set before the company was sold. I am so glad I avoided these paints as I was going to give them away for a gift because I was told the gift receiver loved them. They have since switched to DaVinci because of the starter set I sent to them last Christmas! They also recited the company sale was another reason they switched as they are using some fillers in the "new" paints and they were quite unhappy with their last purchase! I hope I see more from you featuring this set of paints. I do enjoy seeing quality coming through in any paints! See ya again real soon!
@ElviesArt

That's great to know! I do like using this set quite a bit, they're really nice to use although come off as a little chalky looking? Must be the binder or fillers they use... It was pretty affordable which was why I bought it at the time and it would be interesting to compare to see if the paint formula has changed with the new branding. Hopefully it doesn't go down hill.
@mjpete27
@mjpete27 11 күн бұрын
Hullo Elvie, I have often wondered why any starter set has any greens? Having an extra yellow or another blue is so much more sensible. I know some consider Raw Sienna a yellow, but for mixing more robust greens, not the best choice. I have gotten better greys mixing Ultramarine Blue and Raw Sienna than the included Paynes grey! I have seen some very nice paintings made from Jackson's watercolors, yet this starter set would NOT encourage me to buy more paint. What do you think? You have quite a journey to get these paints to you is it worth the trouble? I am wondering if you ordered some ROSA gallery paints from Ukraine would they come faster with less troubles than from the UK or Jackson's? I have found the ROSA paints to be quite nice and I have recommended them when I am told that shipping from DaVinci in California is just to expensive and import taxes are to high as well! I know that Artists in the America's are quite spoiled, yes even Canadians have a lot of choices. I know a KZbinr who lives in Canada and she gets her sister to buy paints for her and they meet up and she pays for them! I suppose it is some violation so I will not mention names! but lower prices and no shipping, nor taxes. They are going to get together anyways, so I guess they take advantage of living arrangements! Oh My I had my string pulled or something, Eh? Thanks for a lovely video and I look forward to your future paintings with these paints!

Thank you for the wonderful comment, I find it really depends on the green added, usually they are good and help with creating some beautiful colours in the limited colour palette, this one however was quite restricting in the brown, red and green area and the black doesn't help push new artists into learning colour mixing. It was pretty affordable for how much paint you get and shipping wasn't to expensive, I bought it on special so could be worse. I have been looking to try ROSA watercolours, their sets are very affordable so its defiantly a brand I've been tossing up trying. I've got another video coming out very soon about the Holbein watercolour tester set which I had a joy using, and it is very well priced so that one I and glad I tried out.

Sweet flip through! I wonder if you have ever used the Schmincke Akademie gouache? I saw your Schmincke Watercolor spread and I did not quite hear the name, but looked at the transcript and it said Jazz set? I have found that quite a few student sets are as good as some professional paints! Not for longevity, but for use they work so well (Like the Schmincke paints) flow and layering etc. I have used a long list of brands and I have found the DaVinci Paints of California to be best all around paints I have yet to use! When considering cost, quality, availability they are just the best. Now I do live in California, so that does spoil me just a bit! I enjoyed seeing your sketchbook and I look forward to watching more of your videos. Thank You for sharing.

Hullo Elvie, these are nice paints and you did a fine job presenting them! That silicone liner? I just do not like it! It is horrible for mixing and stains. I had my paint cakes keep popping out, I finally got them to stick with a bit of medium(GumArabic) in the bottom of the pans, popping the cake back in, then let them dry. I did get several of these when they went on sale because QoR was discontinuing some colors as they were introducing 20 new colors! I like the metal tins and if you get pans with a magnet on the bottom you can fit a whole bunch more pans in those tins and the lids make very nice mixing areas.
@ElviesArt
@ElviesArt 18 күн бұрын
Absolutely, the colours are fantastic but the silicone liner isn't my favorite, I avoid mixing on it which is a shame but it's a nice small size, the pans of paint eventually stick with enough water but there would defiantly be trouble in dry areas!

Hullo Elvie, I tested quite a few brands when I came back to traditional watercolor painting. I finally purchased a 36 set of Mijello Mission Gold Watercolor paints for my choice for the paint I wanted to re-start my traditional art journey! I was just doing ok, but most of my paintings were just nothing special. I was not enjoying my return. I started watching videos online and found a channel “Hullo Alice” she told me about another channel named “In Liquid Color” Denise is an amazing artist and watercolor painter, rather a pigment nerd too! She was involved with DaVinci Watercolors of California and she released a Moody Trio of paint colors and they were truly amazing! I have since purchased all of her curated sets and DaVinci has overtaken most spots on my watercolor palettes! I have gone back to use the Mijello paints a few times and I have done better, yet the joy that I have experienced since making DaVinci my go to paints has not diminished! I am hopeful that you will have a more positive experience with your choices of mission gold paints. I am looking forward to seeing you put them into action! See ya next video.

I tend to go for saturated and bright colors when painting traditionally - purely for that "sunny day" vibe. But you made an interesting point about mixing colors that are already in your pallet - it does help with making them all work together; and it's very similar to a trick in digital painting when you put all the colors you want to use say for a character > overlay them all with one color and color pick that to get a cohesive pallet.

Hullo Elvie, When I came back to traditional painting, I ordered several split primaries from several brands and I decided to go with Misssion Gold from Mijello. I had a few problems with controlling the paints, but I expected some. I found Hullo Alice here on KZbin and she helped me get back into a groove panting with actual paint! She did try to get me to switch to Dan Smith but I had several horrendous customer service debacles and I will NEVER BUY from them again! Alice talked about Denise as a person who really knew about pigments and animal portraits too! Denise had been talking about working on her first Moody set for DaVinci and I bought it to show support for her. I was completely blown away by the paints! I tried one of the mixing sets from DaVinci and I was able to mix like the professional I used to be! I had been painting with watercolors since I was 10, so I knew I had to make up for time spent painting on the computer, I do enjoy the Mijello paints now, especially the blues, but I was doubting my return to paper! I had never made such poor paintings in years! I honestly do not know why switching to DaVinci lead to such a turnaround, but I am sure glad It did! DaVinci is my watercolor paint go to for EVERYTHING! Small projects to huge, studio palettes to travel palettes and mini's too! Plastic to porcelain they are simply the best from the quality to price point you just cannot find a better paint in North America! I believe the only reason I cannot say "in the world" is shipping costs! Oh Boy, sorry for the novella you mentioned going to 200 subs now your almost to 300! Keep up the good work!
