6*BTDC? Best i can tell my 390 in my tbird is set at 15-20 degrees initial timing. It's hard to tell exactly since the little timing tab on the timing cover only goes up to 10 degrees. Wouldn't manifold vacuum give you better fuel economy?
@mattsboatyard6891
@mattsboatyard6891 2 күн бұрын
The factory ignition timing setting for my application is 6 degrees initial. 15-20 degrees of initial timing isn't necessarily unreasonable. What the optimal initial timing and total timing figures are for a motor depend on a lot of variables(camshaft specs, dynamic compression ratio, etc.). I don't know if connecting the vacuum advance to full manifold vacuum would produce higher fuel econ than using ported vacuum. It's possible and would make for an interesting experiment, huh?

Nothing wrong with a Cleveland big port especially when that car is sporting a gear vendor overdrive too! The car has more value and credibility with the original motor anyway.

Yes, a slight increase! This set-up runs nicely, but there is still room for improvement with the tune in my opinion. Going to be doing some data log trials and try to hone the carb in more.

I put one in my '71 Pontiac with a 400 and a Quadrajet along with a Progression Ignition distributor. Almost like fuel injection in how I can tune the car now. I tuned the carb for 14:1 AFR for E10 gas, and set the carb cheater to keep it as close at it can to that ratio.

Is it possible to just leave it on when in manual mode ? So lets say, you come to a standstill and just drive off with it still ingaged. Pretty much making your car feel as if it has a set of taller gears in te rearend ?

No, even in manual mode the gear vendors will disengage the overdrive gearset when you drop below 20 mph.

I'm glad I watched this video. As you said, both are infinitely tunable, but I like how much easier the Edelbrock is to tune, and the fact it doesn't have those awful fuel leak issues like older or well worn Holleys have, with the bowl gaskets or the powervalves. I just put a 1406 Edelbrock on my 66 Mercury today, but I didn't have the throttle bracket adapter to make the factory throttle cable and kick down rod mount up. oh well.
@mattsboatyard6891
@mattsboatyard6891 28 күн бұрын
The edelbrock design does have some advantages in longevity- that is for sure. the Holley has a little more tuneability but the edelbrock still has plenty and the ease at which it can be accomplished is unmatched. Either carb is a good option!

Really interesting gear splitting video. I suppose with 3.23 gears in your diff your rpm's would hover around 2000 with significant mpg savings. thank you again for posting.
@mattsboatyard6891
@mattsboatyard6891 28 күн бұрын
Absolutely, I’m glad you enjoyed it! The gear splitting really is what drew me to the Gear Vendors over other overdrive solutions. Even with the 3.5 gears that the Torino has, 55-60 mph is just above 2000 rpm’s where as with no overdrive, it was turning more like 2700-2900 rpm’s for the same speed.

I have a question. You had to take the speedometer gear off the speedometer cable. How do you compensate for the rear gear ratio so that the speedometer reads correctly? Is that now in the Gear Vendors unit?
@mattsboatyard6891
@mattsboatyard6891 2 ай бұрын
The gear vendors kit includes a speedometer cable adaptor that allows the cars OEM cable to run into the gear vendors unit. When you order the kit from them, just let them know what your gear ratio and tire height are so they include the proper speedo gear in the G.V. unit so that your car's speedometer is accurate!

< 71 F250 crewcab 4x4 6200 lbs empty. FE 390 got 5 to 6 mpg. Its still a work truck and I drive it hard. Put in a very built 300 I6 and got 8 to 13 until it came apart. Rebuilt the 390 and was getting 6 to 7. Replaced the 500 cfm eldecrap with 570 holley street aveneger and after getting it working correctly it is very noticably better gas milage. I havent measured it but I suspect 8 maybe 9 ? ....

I had a 1970 torino GT with a 429 thunder jet (Passenger car engine) with a 4 speed top loader trans with 3.91 gear. 12 mpg tops. Bought it in 1979 when I was 19 years old for $2500. Sold it in 1985 to fund a race car project. Biggest mistake of my life. Not a day goes by regretting not have it yet

Growing up, my dad had quite a few torinos/fairlanes which is how I got into those cars in the first place. One of em was a 70 fastback w/429 TJ that he had done a mild build up on. The car really flew and with highway gears wasn’t too bad on fuel if you stayed out of the accelerator pedal ;).

I went back and forth with a Holley and a Edelbrock carburetor on my V8 Maverick. Modestly modified. My experience was that the Edelbrock was much more reliable, and stayed tuned. The Holley did have a bigger kick WHEN it kicked. I never could get the Holley's to idle right or not change tune with the weather. I prefer the Edelbrock for a daily driver. The Edelbrock is much easier to tune. I did notice that the Holley was a little better on gas.

@mattsboatyard6891 3 ай бұрын
interesting, does your mav have a 302 in it? When i was testing the holley out on this F250, at certain speeds the holley was a little more responsive- punchier.
@Stucifer
@Stucifer 3 ай бұрын
@@mattsboatyard6891 I haven't had the car in years, but it was a 302. An out of the box universal carb (Holley #1850) is a cheap carb. I'm not condemning the Holley. I just say that if you don't really know how to tear one down and tune it, it doesn't slap on and work as well as the Edelbrock. I think part of the problem was the throttle cable to pedal was made for a 2V carb. The 2V cable might not have been long enough to open the secondaries. I think the geometry of the Edelbrock was more forgiving. The secondaries always opened on the Edelbrock
@mattsboatyard6891
@mattsboatyard6891 3 ай бұрын
I'm not sure if there are any differences between throttle cable lengths on 2v vs 4v cars- not an issue i have encountered to this point. On your experience with the holley- thats similar to what i experienced with the 390 on the F250. out of the box, the eddy worked just a bit better. All that said, my other old cars have holleys on em and run well. Both designs have their pros and cons
