Great presentation and speaker. Interesting and informative! Every state/area should have a native plant list and a native plant nursery (some place to buy native plants), so we can all get these native bees in our backyards to ensure their survival.

There are several publications that provide evidence for the disease centers east of Waldo Lake being caused by Coniferiporia sulphurascens. I'm sure that Armillaria is out there too but from my understanding it is the laminated root rot caused by Coniferiporia sulphurascens that generally tends to create the root rot pockets like the ones that can be seen by Waldo Lake.

Yes, nice but one suggestion, don't go on trails in short pants. You should wear regular length pants to avoid Ticks & other bad insects as well as touching Poison Ivy & Sumac. Thanks for a tip I never thought of.

Why are y’all taking the fish out of the water?
@DeschutesLT
@DeschutesLT 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Caleb! We were rescuing the fish before we did some major restoration work on the creek. They were relocated upstream above a net to keep them safe during the restoration project. Once we finished the in-stream work, we removed the nets. You can learn more about the effort here: www.deschuteslandtrust.org/protected-lands/rimrock-ranch-restoration

Thank you Ben. It was a great introduction for me. I'm now living on the Deschutes which is attracting many more and different birds than when I was living on Awbrey Butte. It's a great time to have viewed this talk. I feel more knowledgeable and aware of what guides and a new binocular I should be considering. I'm looking forward to the next talk.

I plan on moving to John Day(the outskirts of it anyway) by the end of this month. And I was just NOW informed by my mother that they are out there but she didn't see that many last summer. Are they out there and if so, are there moderate quantities of them out there or is she right in that they are sparse out there? I'm not to worried about myself, just primarily for my two young boys.

The town of John Day is within the range of rattlesnakes and yes there are reports of them there in town. I've found dozens along the John Day river when I look for snakes recreationally. Rattlesnakes will be near their dens and underground out there generally around November to March, start to emerge in April, and are usually all out of their dens by mid-May. Hey, I see that John Day has the Blue Mountain Hospital, and there is a news story in 2007 of a 3 1/2 year old kid that was given antivenom from there. I also know people who have been treated for rattlesnake bites down in the hospital in Burns. Learn to identify gopher snakes as there will be lots of them around John Day and some people confuse them as rattlesnakes when they flatten out their heads and hiss like crazy. Deaths from rattlesnake bites in the western USA are very low -- only two in Washington state since 1979. The bites are however, painful and antivenom is very expensive, but antivenom administered quickly can be very effective (released from hospital in the same day or next day). Most bites occur when people try to kill or pick up rattlesnakes. None of the snakes out here are aggressive but they can be defensive. The threat of a rattlesnake is completely neutralized if you happen to see it and just stand 4-5 feet way from it. They strike fast but do not move as fast as other snakes can. The boys should do fine if they're told never to pick up snakes out there, and when they reach the right age they can learn to distinguish the non-venomous snakes out there from the rattlesnakes. Cool thing about that region is you are on the edge of an intergrade zone -- the rattlesnakes in that area are primarily northern pacific rattlesnakes, but they mingle and interbreed with great basin rattlesnakes as you get down closer to highway 20 and Burns. If you're lucky you can see unusual mixes of features and wildly aberrant patterned rattlesnakes in between John Day and Burns. Treatment for either rattlesnake bite in Oregon is exactly the same so you do not need to identify different rattlesnakes from each other.

I looked at the area on google maps and it looks like there's far less trees in the surrounding area compared to 10 years ago. Was there a fire or something that killed the trees or am I just mistaken? Thanks!
