Is there a reason why you didn’t use the felt material for the upper strings ?
@lucyurlacher97942 ай бұрын
Great question. I should redo this video, because at this time I do use felt for the upper strings that do not have dampers. The felt I use is not the typical muting felt because I find it too thick. Instead, I use medium thickness action felt. It comes one inch wide and I cut it in half with a rotary cutter. For most pianos that I tune, I use the papp mute where there are dampers because there is no way to injure the damper felt with the papp mute. If the papp mute doesn't fit between the hammers and the dampers, I make very tidy and small loops with the action cloth strip mute and without touching the damper felt (pull damper as far from the strings as possible) I push the felt down to be even with the top of the damper. When pulling the mute out, I hold down the 2 keys to raise the dampers from the strings and very carefully pull the mute out.

nice, can you use compressed air? to blast the dust from the soundboard and collect with hoover?
@lucyurlacher97949 ай бұрын
I’ve never tried that, so I don’t know. I got several new tuning customers because they were so upset about the dust their previous technician got all over their house. As a group they were so upset that I said I would never use air to blow dust.

Lucy- How much do you want to back the old tuning out before you tighten the new coil onto it? I learned to do this "the old fashioned way", without a dummy pin, where we back the old pin out 7 half turns (3&1/2 full turns). I want to learn how to do this the way you're doing also.
@lucyurlacher97949 ай бұрын
I back the pin out 1/2 to 1 turn. I always have the hole in the pin oriented front to back.

Hi Lucy! Greetings, you use other wooden measurements when you regulate the letoff. What would those measures be? Thank you very much!
@rossmorrow30139 ай бұрын
I found that if you are dumping an old fridge, take the rubber seals off and you should be able to extract the door magnet which is approximately 1/8” and it will hold on to the strings to let you set the let-offs!
@lucyurlacher97947 ай бұрын
That is a good idea. The more ideas the better. One thing nice about this technique is being able to vary the letoff distance. If a mute strip is used, the letoff needs to be more than 1/8. In pianos that have a tendency to hammer “bobble” I have hammers letoff slightly farther from the strings in order to have that slight bit more aftertouch. Thanks for your comment!

Thank you for sharing your process, when I use a strip mute I find using tweezers speeds up installing the mute for me. The papp’s mute is the second thing I get out of my case, but I dislike it being my primary mute when tuning the treble because I always get crossed up when I have to move the mute. I imagine for you that you need to move through each instrument as efficiently as possible so speed is the thing. I don’t think I would enjoy that as much, I love sitting down with a new (to me) instrument and taking a few hours, cleaning the interior, fixing squeaks and sticking parts, correcting the pitch (I do it so much 😂) But thank you and a shout out to Woody from EKU who first introduced me to piano technology and service.

Hello from Greenland, For the notes in the middle with three strings and only mute with the long stripe, if i understand correctely, the unisson is tuned with three strings for the right string correct, as you don’t use extra mute to mute again the left string? After all this process do you do another fin tuning, checking separately the unissons. It will take one week with helicopter anf flights to make a prof. Tuner to come here in our village 😢, so i try to understand how to make my first piano tuning. This video helps a lot as it is very clear, step by step. Is it possible to ask you some online guiding through skype?

Yes, but the stiffness of piano wire means we need to make the loops. No right over left and left over right with piano wire.

As a jazz composer, I stay up late in the night writing on my old 1948 Baldwin spinet. The piece I’m working on is probably the most “gorgeous “ in terms of sonic personality! It totally embodies what I was after in both Lyrics and melody!! But, it took over a year to hone it !!! A tender sonnet… or even a lullaby- ish motif made famous by Roger’s and Hart back in the day. Like you sir, you labor and toil over any and every idiosyncrasy to achieve the closest to perfection the moment will allow. Bless you for your secret dedication to this essential craftsmanship!!! Doing so with a mask no less!!! Your utter love for people and your art ( enforcing this medium)shine completely through!!! Yes, I’m a year late with this comment, but ….. I think I speak for our musical forefathers; Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Sondheim, Metheny, Bernstein, Gershwin ect…..who all depended on the( Joseph “ )of their time ) to assist with the phenomenal body of work they gifted to this planet!!!!! As sure as heaven exist…. they all bow to you sir…… ( minus Pat Metheny who is still very much alive !!!!!….. lol …..and … they would all… like me….. subscribe to your wonderful channel!!!!!! Composing these ballads brings me to tears often……and….. even though I’m in good health; turning 67 next month,… it would be an honor to know this current ballad: ” LAILA “ written for my 14 year old grandniece may survive for centuries to bring untold joy to others!!! This will be my debut album coming around Christmas… if I’m stay on course… lol ….. ( stage fright detained me for decades)! However, …. It’s becoming…. manageable. Like you….. it’s not about the sales… it’s about THE SERVICE!!! TO HUMANITY! Thanks again for you and Ms. Urlacher excepting your “ calling “ to this world of sheer wonder!!! Again I say…. We ALL call on you, ……….. to take….. your needed, necessary, well earned, …… and quite OVERDUE……. BOW!!!!!!!!!! BRAVO……. Your life…. Like a classic tune……… is WELL PLAYED… WELL PLAYED INDEED !!! God Bless,🕯 🎼RAIN RAIN 🎼

Great video. I have to replace an agraffe on the 4th A. These wires cross under the bass strings and I assume I have to replace them along with the agraffe. Can I do this without removing some of the base strings? Looks to be extremely difficult otherwise. Thanks!
@lucyurlacher9794 Жыл бұрын
You do not need to replace the strings. Remove the damper, use masking tape to get strings out of the way, being very careful to keep them in order. After you remove the agraffe stub and install a new agraffe, (do you have a procedure for this in mind?) use your string hook to straitened the coils- break off the becket, make a new coil with one less turn, put it on the pin. I have a document with photos showing me doing this process, but I don’t know how I could get the document to you. I hope this helps.

I really like how you explain the process, i would really appreciate if you make another video about the string replacement on a vertical piano, cus I'm gonna fix one next week. Thanks in advance.❤
