E and h lines are pretty much unusable. 3 hours for a 30 minute ride is not cutting it

Sadly, as time goes by, even though there may not be a lot of activity on this line, the bells will eventually be replaced with electronic bells or the entire gated mast signals themselves will be replaced.
@LongmontRailway272 күн бұрын
@38yofrmut Yeah, I'm not expecting it to last forever, unfortunately.

UP did that a lot and had mechanical bells that were loud and stopped ringing for the rest of the crossing cycle, when all gates were completely lowered, until about the late 1990's when they changed manufacturers and gradually started replacing a lot of their older signals, even though the incadescent bulbs were replaced with an LED bulb/lens combo. Sometimes the bells would resume ringing again when the gates raise at some of their crossings, yet a lot of their gateless mast and cantilever signals usually had only one mechanical bell (similar to BNSF only having one e-bell for both signals, cantilver or mast, at a crossing) or even no bells at all (especially at older crossings, 1970's-1980's, in Utah and Idaho, Noland Rd in Independence, MO, just to name a few places). Before the merger, Southern Pacific and Western Pacific always had bells on all of their signals (both sides of the crossings) and the bells would continue ringing while the gates were down then stop ringing when the gates start to raise. This was especially noticeable throughought Oregon, California, Arizona, Nevada, and even small parts of Utah, New Mexico, and Kansas where the Western and Southern Pacific Railroads each had lines. Sadly, they have all been replaced, including WP and SP searchlight signals, with newer UP Harmon signals that have e-bells and LED lenses.

(5:59) I was wondering if that particular unit was still operating - BNSF 2749 was originally Nickel Plate Road 904, the fifth of 10 GP30's built for the NKP in 1962. BNSF has two rebuilt ex-NKP GP30's on their roster - this one and the 2750 (ex-NKP 909). I have yet to find any videos of the 2750 in operation, but the Diesel Shop website indicates that it is still in active service on the BNSF system.
@LongmontRailway2710 күн бұрын
@kevinbaker4241 BNSF 2749 got leased to ADM in Marshall, MN this past September. I am not sure about 2750, it might be in a deadline somewhere if there's no footage if it, I certainly haven't seen any, especially in recent times.

And the UP uses CH-69 160.145 on the Fort Collins Sub, but they will call BNSF on CH-70 to cross the diamond, and they talk to GW on their channels if I remember correctly. @FrontRangeRailfan Freight traffic is really obscure on this line. Never count on it, especially in the section documented here. Usually, they only run in the summer, and how much they run is based on the demand for maintenance.
