Thanks for responding. Let me rephrase my question. How do they know that it is the earth causing the rotation and not the magnets? I did the math, it would only need to apply enough force to move it 1/80th of 1° each swing to complete the 360° day.

Non-linear movement of the pendulum from its interaction of the magnetic system is definitely possible, especially when considering the setup isn't within ideal, perfect conditions. Thankfully, such movement is countered and more or less nullified via Lenz's law because the angle of deflection is quite small. Hope this helps.

The negation or correction of minor direction changes on trajectory paths would make sense under Lenz Law if those magnets were stationary. Theoretically, then shouldn't it also negate the minor changes it experiences from the earth's spin since that is the purpose. Also, How does it pass through the magnets without obstructing the path of rotation? Does it move with with the wire?

But the pivot that the pendulum cable is attached to at the ceiling is itself connected to the earth , and therefore the pivot must be producing a torque on the cable as the earth spins , which in turn will affect the orientation of the plane of the pendulum swing , would it not ?

The fact that it is spinning proves earth rotation, the fact that it takes longer time the closer you get to the equator proves that earth is a globe. Two proofs in one concept.

So I understand how the back of a reflector can be cooled with water but how is the bulb itself cooled with water? Does it have glass veins in it? Is this water cooling in addition to fan cooling or is it only water cooled?

There are also fans providing air circulation in the lamp house to help dissipate heat. There is also distilled water flowing in both ends of the lamp to control the heat from the arc lamp. The glass part of the lamp does not have glass veins.

I have a (possible) answer to your challenge to prove the rotation of the earth without a Foucault pendulum! Assume we still had all our other knowledge of physics (namely, relativity and the speed of light) and could still perform parallax measurements to get approximate distances of celestial bodies like the sun, planets, and nearby stars, but, for some reason, hadn't proven the rotation of the earth. In that case, we could take measurements of the distances of the planets and the sun, and arrive at the same numbers for their positions in relation to the sun. We'll use light years and light days as the unit of measurement here. If we assume the earth is not spinning, we would observe that celestial bodies like the sun, planets, and stars "orbit" the earth once per day. So the other planets and distant stars trace an approximately circular orbit around the earth once per day. Say we also have determined they are themselves made of matter, rather than projections of light. Using our assumed knowledge of relativity and the speed of light, knowing that ordinary matter can not travel faster than the speed of light, we can set a limit about how far away the celestial bodies could be in their "orbits around the earth". Beyond this limit, they would have to be moving faster than the speed of light to orbit us once a day, which is an impossibility. All we really need to do is determine the radius of a circle with a circumference of 1 light day (the distance light travels in 1 day in a vacuum, equal to 0.002738 light years) as any mass with a daily orbit around earth farther away than that radius would have to travel faster than the speed of light to attain that orbit. A quick look at our handy 2 r π = Circumference = 1 light day formula and we get a circle with a radius of ~0.159155 light days. That's about 4.1224 billion kilometers. That's our limit for a celestial body's distance from earth in it's daily "orbit". No object we can physically see in the night sky can be farther than 4.1224 billion kilometers from earth without violating the laws of physics and traveling faster than light speed in order to complete 1 "orbit" around the earth per day. Let's check the planets, just to be sure. We've already established our ability to take accurate measurements of this distance, despite our blind spot about the earth's rotation. For fun, we'll use the date I'm typing this comment, just after midnight PST on November 6th, 2023. (Source: www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/planets/distance) Venus is OK (118.888 million km), and so is the Sun itself (148.309 mil. km). Mercury (210.313 mil. km), Mars (380.073 mil. km), and even Jupiter (596.214 mil. km) all look good! They're all under a billion km, much less 4.1224 billion. Uh oh, Saturn's pretty far away (1.409 billion km) and so is Uranus (2.788 bil km), but we're still within our limit, maybe we'll be OK. Uh oh. Neptune looks like a problem. Oh no! Neptune is 4.374 billion km from earth! And we see it "orbit" the earth every day! It must be moving faster than the speed of light! And so is Pluto! And a bunch of our space probes! And every object in the Kuiper belt, the Oort cloud, not to mention every star in the sky! They're all "orbiting" the earth faster than the speed of light! Actually, we're OK. We know those objects are plenty far away from us, and are doing just fine. Of course it's the earth that's spinning. There's no huge daily orbits of the planet. It's just our little blue and green ball, floating in our little divot in spacetime, spinning on its axis. Once every 24 hours, plus or minus a few milliseconds. No broken speed limits, just a few thousand peaceful brass pendulums swinging back and forth, slowly and silently tracking our pale blue dot's cosmic twirl.

A view of Earth from space is both breathtaking and a great way to prove the earth is spinning! Thankfully math (and the Foucault pendulum) are great alternatives for those of us whom may be quite nervous riding a vehicle with nearly 1 million pounds of fuel😆 However, there is a way to prove the Earth's rotation without going into space.

How do you keep the pendulum moving? Wouldn’t it stop at some stage? Or is movement induced by an electromagnet. In such a case how do you induce the movement without affecting the angle of the pedulum? Great video!

Oooo, GREAT question! You actually nailed it on the head! At the very top, where the wire attaches, is called the pivot point. Just below it is a small circular electromagnet that the wire passes through. The electromagnet is juuusssttt close and delicately calibrated to be strong enough that the wire is grabbed/attracted by the magnet as the wire swings toward it. The wire is pulled to and touches the electromagnet. Then, as the heavy ball at the bottom swings the other direction, the wire overcomes the attractive force from the electromagnet. This action adds the same amount of energy that has been lost. In fact, if you stand at the bottom where our Greg, our planetarium manager, is standing and look up at the ceiling where the wire comes out, you can see a very slight vibration of the wire as it "snaps” away from the electromagnet. Now, to the “did you know…?” COOL part that you really didn’t ask for, but well, is just cool to know. We are taught and learn that gravity an invisible force that pulls objects toward each other. So, it is easy to make an inference or connection in our minds that there is a gravitational pull on the ball from the Earth and vice versa (true) and that this attraction is what would make the pendulum eventually stop swinging back and forth if we didn’t have our electromagnet (false). It is actually the energy “loss” due to FRICTION that would stop the pendulum from swinging without our electromagnet adding that energy “back into” our pendulum near our pivot point. Poppycock! Friction you say?!? Yep. There are different sources of that friction, which, to us wouldn’t seem to be that impactful - but welcome to the wonderful world of Physics! The types of friction impacting our pendulum include air resistance (on the ball, the wire, and even at the pivot point connection at the top) and the internal friction from the string itself. Each molecule of wire must exert force on the next molecule all along the length of the wire. And, all along the length of the wire, there exists friction “losses” which will eventually bring the pendulum to a halt. So, if we ignore all of these complications (even in an idealized case and EVEN in a vacuum) the main point is that it's frictional “losses” that cause the pendulum to come to rest, not gravity! @@sciport I think that would be a half revolution. At the North Pole, a pendulum would swing unaffected as the earth turns under it. In 12 hours the back and forth direction would line up again with the initial line, but a full cycle is 24 hours. Where you are, at close to 30 degrees latitude, apparently a Foucault pendulum turns only half as fast, so a full rotation would be about 48 hours, or maybe 44 hours at 32 degrees.

Hello@@kitchencone...Greg Andrews here. I responded to your explanation but I recently learned my response did not go through. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ . Your answer is correct - it does take 44 hours for a full rotation at our latitude...but the answer of 22 hours is also correct! As you superbly explained, the 44 hour cycle is based on the pendulum's perspective. The answer of 22 hours is based on an our unattached perspective. I thought I explained this concept in the original video but it may have been omitted for time consumption. Here's an example of what I mean by perspective. Assume a person is in a slow-moving train and they are tossing a ball up and down. Then assume a person is outside of the train watching the ball. The person in the train views the ball going straight up and straight down. The person outside the train sees the ball moving in an arch. Both persons view a different motion of the ball, and both motions are correct based on their viewing platforms. Unfortunately in my initial answer (of 22 hours), I did not define my viewing platform. My assumption was the question was based our observed viewpoint, not the pendulum's viewpoint. I also wanted to avoid creating a type of "TL;DNR" type of answer (which is what tends to happen when I go into nerd mode 😁 🤓)

They had a foucault pendulum at the Hansen Planetarium in Salt Lake City. Probably still do. Story goes, we were on a field trip there one day along about the 4th grade or so when one of our group reached out and smacked it. For some reason the smack caused the little stud at the bottom of the ball to come lose and contact the floor as the thing came to a hop-skip-drag stop. We all gasped out loud and I can only imagine how humiliated our teacher was. I always thought that it was necessary to fly in some kind of triple-PhD scientist from his lab on another continent to get the thing going again, but apparently not since the host here explains how the team there at Sci-Port starts theirs going on a daily basis (but, then again, maybe they are all triple-PhD scientists). Anyway.. thank you for this very interesting and informative video!

Thanks for the info. As your comment highlights, the stories, artwork, perceptions (and in some cases the names) of constellations can, and often do, differ from one culture to the next, and even from one person to another! I noticed the Apollo 11 print on the top platter. Interesting how one of the last 70mm film presentations ever at the Sci-Port Discovery Center was of this print. Also, it's interesting to have learned that only about 12 IMAX 70MM FILM prints of this feature were made.

I went last weekend and I think you should trun up the volume some in your start up demo when it said something about base there was alomost nothing there the movie sounded good but it also said 6ch sound I think and the IMAX laser is 12 ch the movie sounded good but it was not as powerfully as Avarta 2 at IMAX with laser at amc for somereason there theater was shaking the heck out of us and the trailers were like real life in the sound deparment at amc might just be a Christopher Nolan thig but it was cool at yours I expected something a little more also the picture looked washed out something to do with the briteness the blacks looked gray

Yeah, why do you hate it? The little holes in the screen bother you? It's not in focus well enough? Maybe the seats at yours were too bright and sent reflections back at the screen although they are black seats at this particular theater?

I saw on your website that you're upgrading to digital IMAX. I was a bit saddened as I love the 70mm film format and still think it's the best format to watch a movie on. But I heard you were limited to 40 minute documentaries and the new digital system would allow you to show feature films. Now I'm kicking myself for not going more while you had your film system. Part of me hopes that you'll keep the film projection system around just in case, but I think you're going to be digital only from now on. Though the digital system will be cheaper and easier to maintain. Anyway, I hope the new system will bring you new opportunities to come.

BUT, I think were MORE excited at not only being able to see feature films like the new release of Black Panther 2 (set to go live for us on Friday, Nov. 25), but also that the image will be crisp and we'll have an entirely NEW sound system. John is actually standing in front of the amplifiers at the beginning of the video. They're built into the wall behind him on the right. They're Sonics brand which is a brand made just for imax theaters. John tells me they pull a lot of power. That whole system including the speakers will be removed and replaced during our digital upgrade this year. Look forward to that!

Dude, I went to the omni theatre in Fort Worth Texas years ago on a field trip in school. I remember thinking that this was the future for movie theatres, now seeing behind the scenes I now understand why they weren't reproduced and made the standard... The requirements to run such an amazing experience can't really be streamlined and reproduced without serious money behind it and to get investors for a project like this that there is no real blueprint for isn't easy. But how cool is this? I've never seen screens like that and what a badass idea for the holes for the enormous subs. Everything about this is so amazing. If I had elon musk or Jeff bezos kind of money I would take this idea and optimize it to the fullest and even add in those roller coaster simulator type chairs with misters, fans and the works to go all out in making an experience like this something that reignites attention again.

Hey Carl, thanks for your comment! Even though this is pretty cool, we’re actually going to be converting to a digital format beginning next spring. It will allow us to keep the curved image on the main screen which is a surround experience but with an actual digital movie which would include new releases as in regular theaters as well! Stay tuned.

@@sciport that's what I was going to bring up, switching to digital data instead of having to rely on huge reels of film wouldn't just reduced the cost of operation, but make the maintenance easier too. I have a question though, are the movies you guys play in theatres like this limited to movies made for experiences like this? Like, you couldn't have any regular movie in theatres like this right? Wait, nevermind I answered my own question, you wouldn't be able to play them unless you had a reel for it, but considering you get it switched over to digital, what kind of new opportunities does that bring with it? :)

@@Sanestpenji Yes. The new digital format would allow us to play not only the movies currently in the IMAX based genre, but also regular or other movies as in the ones playing in regular theaters. It totally opens up our whole world!
