I live close to an area known for being a great white breading ground and the waters are typically around 50°F or 10°C, so i’m always in a wetsuit for me about 7 mm not on a surfboard but on an innertube in a mesh bag because I’m doing a type of fishing that requires diving into the water without a tank. Visibility is low until you are at the bottom, mostly. But I’ve never seen a shark while diving. There was one time there was ZERO visibility even at the bottom. And while I was down there ‘feeling for Abalone’ I collided with a large moving object! (I knew this because it had force coming from a different direction!) I swam to the surface of the ocean so fast I halfway breached the surface. Got on my tube and was headed the 300 meters to shore. Then what was probably only a split second later my friend popped up to the surface like I had and shouted to me, “Was that You?” That was such a relief to hear those words! And we joke about to this day, even though it was decades ago. But for that day, I was done with diving! And never dove again in water without there being at least 2 meters of visibility!

Sad story Hal.....To me swimming or surfing out there where the sharks are is like walking through Africa and being surprised when a lion attacks you....just knowing they are there is enough to stop me from doing it....

I have a healthy respect for the ocean. I know people love to say how rare shark attacks are and that sharks don't look at us as food regularly. But I guarantee if you're that 1 in 100,000 that gets eaten by a 14-ft great white, the horror is immense! 😱

Amazing how people ignore the fact that this place has a bad reputation for shark attacks.... Make wise choices and decisions, find safer waters to surf. Arrogance never results to anything good.

I've been wondering what ever happened to that company in Australia which was working on the shark-bite-discouraging wetsuit designs - I think a show about that would be very interesting. Hal's POV would be a welcome addition to the entire concept.

Biggest shark I have ever clapped eyes on was at Hangover bay Western Australia year 2023, a massive Great White!! This thing was soooo big and in only waste high water. We could see at least the top half of the shark out of the water, just swimming slow, I will never forget how something so big can swim in such shallow water. We had been in the surf the day before with no sight of the beast. All the best from Western Australia Shamesville!!!

Man eater, really, LMAO. When the sharks start growing legs and attack humans on shore, then you can call them man eaters. If you are swimming in the ocean, you are just another meal for the next big fish.

Very sad to lose kids!.. most shark attacks are survivable because they’re usually exploratory bites & once they realize it’s not a seal they split. But in murky waters if a big un decides ur dinner there’ll be no “test bite”. At least it’s over quick & there’s much less noble ways of dying! 99.99% of deaths don’t make international news, YT vids or get studied by scientists!! 🦈🪦💔😢

Th weird thing is that people know about these prehistoric animals, yet they go to kayak fishing or surfing... it remind me all those people who get robbed in the touristic places in Italy, they know that there are lot of pick pocket in those places, yet they put their values in the backpack.. lol

Couple of corrections here .I had the privilege of working with Jevan Wright before he was taken ,we both worked for a major Tuna fishing/farming company in Port Lincoln South Australia .He was a terrific young man, a good conscientious worker and a very polite lad. He is sadly missed by all who knew him.Eyre Peninsula is not pronounced eerie it is pronounced as you would Air.Second the attack did NOT take place at Black point on Yorke Peninsula as you showed, it occurred at Black Reef outside of Elliston on Eyre Peninsula which is 610 kilometers from Black Point or 379 miles away .RIP Jevan.

The California Coastline, Oregon and Washington State has some Monster sized White Sharks as well. Theyve been a protected species for over 30 years there off of the US Coastline. Same as South Africa too. Colder waters are where they love to hang out. Unless, of course...a Pod or family of Orcas come through. Then you'll look back and every one of those White Sharks will just be GONE....
