Yep! and Yuk! I loved them up until Six Degrees, then felt disappointed by the Train of Turds and didn't bought a single CD after that. Listened a couple of time to Octacrap, felt disappointed and didn't even listen to newer releases after that. That's how much disappointed I was. Then I casually read of Portnoy quitting, I saw the mini series of auditions, I heard in disbelief how robotic Mangini sounded, and nope nope nope... Every time they reach a new bottom. Now lip synch and playback backing vocals? Oh my... I'm going to listen to some Cliff Burton isolated tracks to clean my soul. I feel like, even with Portnoy, they thought they can compose anything as if they are Frank Zappa, but they aren't at a musical level since they box themself in the metal genre, and for sure they aren't FZ at a comedic level; so the result is a soup of cliché of various bands at the limit of covers, plagiarism and copying the sound of the production (like in Octacrap, but I didn't listen after that), some Disney music, some circus music, tornado of notes, all in metal sauce. Boring.

I dig LaBrie, I do, but maybe it's time for someone else to step in. I get the dude has been the voice of DT, but Devin Townsend sang Spirit Carries On far better than LaBrie could.

It's a tough one for sure, but do you force your audience to listen to this or accept the inevitable and get some new blood in. I would get some new blood because I don't see DT being some wonderful family. They kicked out Mangini without thinking about it. Labrie is not original, they booted their original singer because he didn't cut the mustard. Imagine having someone in there that could pull of a great vocal live!

I do have some more videos I want to release eventually. This channel is a low priority though, and unfortunately, somewhere between one-third and one-half of Dream Theater's audience appears to be totally impervious to the truth. It does not matter how many lies and gaffes the band is caught in. They get angry rather than persauded.

@@theravenskillrebelmilitia139 I've seen on many videos voice coaches that have commented about how at his age, expecting him to sing what he used to is impossible. I've also seen you say how his singing is "bad" in this clip but not in the 90's, followed by this: @theravenskillrebelmilitia139 because he was 10 years younger, without having suffered a vocal rupture, without 10 years of touring and constantly exposing his vocal folds through an amount of damage that very few singers can sustain without becoming voice-less. Singing stuff from Images and Words and Awake would destroy anybody's voice in the long term. You can tell that whoever wanted that high register back than (probably Portnoy) didn't know shit about vocals and how impossible it is to sing like that non-stop. And in fact Labrie's voice started to crack way before the incident: you can already hear it in japan 1993, where he was way worse compared to the very start of the I&W tour during fall 1992. At the end of his very first tour with dream theater you could already hear the cracks and pops, which were both his fault (due to early bridging and in general to his technique being too harsh on his vocal folds) and the vocal damage that he had to sustain in order to sing like that this explains why his singing isnt as good as it used to be. you seem to avoid things like these

@@williamtaylor2044 But how does it follow that Dream Theater must keep LaBrie, and resort to great deceptive lengths to keep propping him up, because his voice has worn out through a combination of the food poisoning incident, overuse, and aging? That is a total non-sequitur.

Well hey, look at it this way. All his bad performances are from after Portnoy left the band. Maybe now that Portnoy's back, the force that keeps Labrie from putting more than 30 percent effort in singing is now taking effect.

Come on, guys. The material is challenging enough for a singer with a voice in top notch conditions. Think of an aging singer with throat issues over the years like a musician who suffers from tendonitis. A musician on a bad day makes a few mistakes. Broken strings? Change it, no biggie. Ripped drumhead on a drum? Avoid it and the drum tech will get it sorted out on 2mins. A singer blows his voice? There's no fixing it. And keep in mind, this is the last show of a freaking 8-month tour. LaBrie did a really god job. Give him a break.

One of several arguments I hear on a regular basis, which has been addressed over and over again. If the vocal cords wear out over time, and cannot be replaced, then that makes a case IN FAVOR OF bands changing singers at some point, not keeping someone with a busted voice. It should be pointed out, however, that LaBrie's voice has aged poorly compared to other metal vocalists. Rob Halford and Bruce Dickinson are OLDER than LaBrie, and neither one turned into a squawking seagull.

This video sucks balls tremendously... James gave the band the personality and power they needed from a frontman. After several flawless records and tours he is not a band member anymore, he is family, and you dont fire family just because they are having hard times. He has got bad shows but he keeps coming up whenever age or sickness thow him down

The "family" argument has been addressed many times. Why can't they remain friendly with James while still having him exit the band? They remained friendly with Charlie and Derek, and tried with Kevin Moore, but he distanced himself from the band as much as possible, for reasons not entirely known. Whatever "power" and "personality" LaBrie originally brought to the band are gone. He sounds like an escaped dementia unit patient now, and there is no excuse at all for keeping him.

Boy, for such a technical band this really is the polar opposite of what you'd call the 'icing on the cake'. More like jizz all over the cake and buffet section.. I feel bad for the guy, but it's an unfortunate fact that vocals are usually the hardest thing to maintain, especially when you're talking over literal decades. It's a shame that muscle can't be maintained more easily, but it should also be said that, if you do stay in shape and eat healthy, it might not wind up being this bad.. But I'm not him so won't judge, it just sucks for everyone lol.

It is strange that they insist on the highest levels of musicality possible except for LaBrie. Allegedly, they canned Derek Sherinian because they thought Rudess "would take their music to the next level." So why tolerate this kind of sloppy singing? They almost fired James in 2002, so there's no way they like his singing now. They're probably contractually powerless to get rid of him.

This is a band whose best selling album from over 30 years ago has only sold 700,000 copies to date. Besides his voice being undesirable to many people, being technically proficient and fast doesn't make for music that many people want to hear. I have listened to most of their catalog and the noodly, wankfest of long songs demonstrating how technical they are doesn't equate to an enjoyable listening experience for me. The songs are too long in many cases. And the piano based ballads are not metal. "Return to Serenity" by Testament is a metal ballad.

they use backing tracks and stem tracks, as do most metal bands these days. too many layers and accents that would sound terrible live. i hate dream theater with a passion but it's normal to perform with backing and stem tracks. The only metal bands that perform nearly perfect without constant backing tracks that I am aware of are trivium, parkway drive, between the buried and me, killswitch engage, cattle decapitation, five finger death punch, alter bridge, all that remains, heaven shall burn, arch enemy, disturbed, metallica, 311, and dave matthews band.

The fact that you named all of those bands shows there's a point in history when it was not commonplace to use lots of playbacks. Dream Theater used a few here and there while Portnoy was in the band for parts that could not be executed live. After Portnoy quit, they started using them for parts that could easily be executed live.

You can be upset that they flub or get lazy, but they're still performing despite being caught up in their moment and forgetting about the track(s) playing. You can still hear them do their thing, though. You're acknowledging the use of tracks for doubling/harmony, yet I'm seeing where you're livid in the comments and seem to be in disbelief that instruments need to take advantage of that, too. There are so very many layers/takes used to make music sound the way it does, I'm sure you're aware. It's a bummer you seem so upset about it, I guess it's from all the comments and people probably getting angry with you. They suck for that, sorry if that's the case. Your point is certainly contentious, but that doesn't mean others should be crude in responding to it.

at 2:26, he broke the string while bending the 24th fret on the e string, so i´m assuming he broke that string. The next note would´ve been probably on the 24th fret Estring without the bend. He moved closer to the neck of the guitar, i assume to the 5th fret b string. the pinch harmonic there is the same sound like the 24 on the broken e string. the question is, will the whole guitar detune if you break a string? a lot of bridges have that, I dont know if he has a built in mechanic to avoid it.
