Hi Mr.Picllesworth. Yes, I rather think it sounds worse on the video than in real life, but yes it does sound rattly. It sounds to rattle more when only light or no pressure is applied. The drill was only a faily cheap drill in truth that I bought over 30 year ago but is still drilling holes in various materials. I do have a second hand better quality drill which I have not really used yet. I extended the length of the post on this cheap drill which makes it usable quite readily with the compound vice I like to use with it. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers.

Hi Martin, I think(as a beginner), I probably just juggled things about to get the cutting tool to the work face.Unfortunately on this Chinese lathe the tool post is actually mounted onto the top of the moving section of what is effectively a vice (as well as the tool post support (so I have the vice jaws closed tightly together to give the tool post some degree of rigidity, (the top slide/vice is very much a compromise I am afraid and does not have a graduation scale on the hand wheel so the lower cross slide dial has to be used for any degree of tool tip movement. Thanks for the comment and any advice

Hi Harold,Thanks for watching the video and your welcome moment BoilerMaking appears tobea Subject to be steered well clear of with many aspects of "Fit" unsure of with regard to making a successful boiler I am following two books One claims the tubeplate should be a tight fit in the barrel and the second advises a 3to 5 thousands of an inch gap between the components to allow for silver solder to penetrate along the full length of the joint I am also following the advice of a fellow member at my local club ( who now has two successful boilers to his credit) I hope I can stay the course and complete this boiler which would (I hope) give some idea of the ( FIT) and what they should look like. Have you experience at boiler building and the "Fit" of parts required and conducive to a successful boiler build Many thanks for commenting Andy G

Hi. I made all the parts for a Holmside boiler so it was complete ready to silver solder together, i did do some of the silver soldering but chickened out as I was using propane and reconned I was going to need a serious amount of BTU's especially when it came to the foundation ring. In the end I sold the engine, I'd got to many projects on the go as it was. I do wish you success with your Holmside especially the boiler, thank you for sharing your buld warts and all. Please don't take this as a negative, I think I probably gave up to easily.

Hi Martyn Thanks for watching and even more, thanks for commenting on the video as thecomments are very useful to myself and others Later in the project we will see my first attempt at a singer solder joint on what would appear to be the easiest joint to be made and how I struggle to perform it, so I do appreciate your concerns of many BTU's being required for the build especially as the build becomes a sizeable mass of copper A terrible shame you did not complete your build and end up with a running loco I take it you are still involved in the hobby and maybe even building another loco? Cheers Best wishes Andy G

Hi Andy. As far as the Holmside went I soldered the barrel to the firebox wrapper and soldered in the throat plate, using a higher temperature range silver solder so when I came to do other joints there would'nt be any risk of melting any previous joints. I had also soldered the firebox tube plate in and soldered the tubes in place. Then I got cold feet and chickened out. Yes I'm Model Engineering I'm just one of those who purchased castings while I was working for projects I'd liked to build during retirement, then realising I'd simply got to many. As far as other boilers go I did part build a 3" Atkinson steam lorry boiler but again chickened out when it came to putting the inner and outer assemblies together again the thought of how much heat I would need for the foundation ring worried me. However I had some help and that boiler has been finished and tested okay. I have a Speedy on going and a Tich which I am confident I can complete that boiler myself just need some good weather as I have to do my soldering outside. I'll follow you progess with interest good luck. Martyn. @@masterpiecesinminiature8299

Thanks John, Yes there is a lot involved but hopefully the series will save other hobbiests making the same mistakes I will probably make, thereby working safely, saving time and very importantly money. The formers I am currently describing will in some cases be available to purchase from Model Engineering Suppliers. The series will hopefully expose the "Art" of boiler making as being a great possibility of achieving. The "Fit" and tolerances will I hope be made clear, as this is probably one of the great fears, (for me at least).
