What makes Stonehenge so special is its avenue, which follows the lines of a natural feature that just so happens to align with the winter/summer solstices. Are there any other such monuments that have that association? I don’t know of any. It seems to me that its location is what makes Stonehenge so special and deserving of its scrutiny, as it was likely highly important to the peoples who, stage by stage, built this. In other words it seems to me highly likely Stonehenge is either unique or extremely rare.

I love Avebury and can’t believe it is less popular than Stonehenge. I think the answer to Stonehenge’s continuing monopoly might just be convenience. Stonehenge is a compact site and much more accessible than many others. If you want to publish new research you don’t need to leave your desk, there is plenty of data for a study. If you do fancy a bit of original research (and you went to the right educational establishments) you’d be more likely to secure funding. Maybe the thought of trekking all the way to Cumbria is less appealing. Once this kind of behaviour is set as a precedent and keeps being rewarded, it will keep happening.

THAT WOULD BE ASSUMING THERE WAS NOT TREE OR BRUSH COVERAGE AND JUST OPEN PLAIN FIELDS WHICH WOULD BE PERFECT FOR GRAZING AND GRAIN PRODUCTION IN A HISTORY TIMELINE !! ORGANIC MATERIAL WOULD HAVE LONG SINCE DETERIORATED AWAY SUCH AS BEAMS AND ROOF THATCHING AND BROAD FLAT STONE WOULD HAVE BEEN THE GRAIN GRINDING BEDS WHEN DONE BY HAND. Personally I believe there is an explanation to the purpose of these henge monuments, including the 'recumbent' henge monuments of Scotland. I believe the answer lies not in the archaeology, that will only drive us mad trying to 'decode' all of the artifacts, alignments and interments within and around these sites. The answer is cultural. Can't say what it is as I'm always researching it. But once you suss it, it's pretty obvious.

To my understanding it was Stonehenge itself which was the benchmark in establishing just what a 'Henge' monument is. The definition of a Henge being derived directly from Stonehenge. However, when they created this definition, someone got the arrangement of the ditches and banks the WRONG WAY ROUND. They established that a Henge monument must have a circular ditch OUTSIDE of a circular bank. At Stonehenge this arrangement is the other way round and so, very 'clever' people like to point out that Stonehenge is 'not a henge'. In the technical definition, no it's not, but as Stonehenge was the archetype that was drawn on to establish the categorisation IN THE FIRST PLACE, of course Stonehenge is a henge monument! It's just a pity they cocked-up the classification.

Neolithic people left standing stones all over Great Britain (and other parts of Europe) and no one really knows why. Stonehenge is easily the most dramatic of these, so of course it gets the attention.

In the 1950s my father was a driver for Pickfords hauliers. He was one of the workers who removed all of the stones from Stonehenge. The site was completely stripped then dug over by architects. The stones were then replaced and set into concrete there is plenty of film of the restoration and archive evidence. I have around 22 black and white pictures of the work.

The work of Mario Buildreps unlocks the simitary of the structure while explaining the structure holistically. Buildreps also discovered the relationship of the structure with lunisticies. I believe this henge was placed as a time stamp to make a special point location and time. The only stone that is an outlier is the altar stone, being 88, I knew 70 Years ago it is not from Wales, I studied Geology at University, the rock is To YOUNG! Bluestones are all over South Wales, standing in line , the Sarsens are NOT Bluestones they are the same as at Avebury from Quarries, the Bluestones are ONLY found in Preseli South West Wales. You are talking Bollocks. You need to look a bit wider, English Heritage have been liars for many years and are always making claims about ENGLISH heritage there is nothing English there at all, but there is plenty of Cymric there, the Stonehenge Skeletons under the Bluestones, were looked at for DNA by Cambridge University, I was asked and my Father was asked for his DNA because we come from a long lineage in Ceredigion, we know that because of Norman Charters to my Ancestors, who were granted to farm and live on their Land in the 12th Century, we are still there Today. The DNA of the Skeletons showed that the People who built Stonehenge namely the Bluestones were from Ceredigion and Penfro ( Preseli) they are literally 6000 years old, all over South Wales from Penfro to Casgwent there are the remnants of Bluestone Standing stones, many are on ridgeways in South Wales where even the Romans said that the Roadways were Ancient, that is written down in Latin by a scribe of the 2nd Augustus Legion, they also were in the River Wye till they were hauled up by someone in the 18th Century as Stepping Stones, at Pyle and Margam in Glamorgan there are also Bluestones on what was to the Via Marinari, showing that the Romans used them forr Marking stones, I once talked with my Father about an Ancestor of Mine Called Sir Arthur Evans, he was always like his Father John being called English, he knew not especially at Oxford or Cambridge in dinners to argue. I have some of his Diaries he knew the Bluestones were from the West Of Wales and that they were there 2000 Years before the Sarsens, but he thought the altar stone was from Scotland because the Rocks of What is now England and Wales were Older particularly the Cambrian and Devonian, whilst one stone looked like Rock found in the Southern Highlands. He had more interests afoot and forgot about it. Nearly Forty Years Later He wrote in his diary, Pentre Ifan has Bluestone, there are Bluestone found in the Burial Mounds at Stonehenge, also at Caergwrle, Travelled to Margam Abbey to visit the Iron age Hillforts, there are Fourteen across Margam Mountain to Mynydd Baiden and literally over a Hundred more to the West and East of Margam, I found Bluestone Standing stones above Llangynwyd, the Ruins of the Norman Castle has some in its Walls. he opined these people also in these Hillforts were the Decendents of the original builders, saying everything is much older than I thought the Roman Camps are here in force, these were Silurians are Scyllt or Sili in Cymric. He opined that the Saxons came no further than Margam because they were defeated at the Battle of Baiden, that was in 498 or 528 maybe two battles, certainly there are large burial pits of Saxons there. * noted he said after a little sketch, so much archaeology here, History for thousands of Years,, to this day the Ordinance Survey maps of Mynydd Baiden and Elsewhere in South Wales from the Original say " British Entrenchments " . The DNA of the Stonehenge skeletons is Brythonic the strains are small for other strands these people were Ancient in Ancestry when they died in their DNA, but their strains are only found in what is now Wales particularly in the West with a large Portion of the same DNA, my DNA was 94/96 % Brythonic with 94% the same as the Skeletons the 2% difference is in the DNA of my Great Grandmother who was Cornish and spoke Cornish, which is exactly the same as Cymric with slight dialect, Corn is a term in Cymric for people who dwell by the Sea Lakes or Rivers, we are all similar in Genetics, I had 1% Iberian 1 % Gael , nothing of Germanic or Nordic . Similarly Burials in Mounds across Britain are finding similar to my DNA with slight differences , for instance they did a test on Skeletons that were from the late Roman period at Llandaff Cathedral, they have Christian burials there back to the 2nd Century and may well be 1st Century, this why the Cathedral was founded there centuries later there are many Cymric Kings there also, but the DNA of the early Burials, are interesting one man had 84% from what was then Gaul but his DNA is similar to the Brythonic DNA he was from the area around Caen in what is now Normandy, is other DNA was what is Called Helvet who were also Celts in what is now Switzerland he may well have been a Roman Soldier, the Romas brought Celts with them because the Language was similar on the Continent and in Italy as well, there were also two found with DNA that is similar to the Slav DNA of Russia and Ukraine both were together. they had wounds of Battle on their bones. They should get rid of English Heritage and rename it Bollocks Row for they and Time Team have messed up British History.
