On this side of the planet (Europe) we often consider the raid on St Nazaire one of the greatest raids of WWII (it certainly took brave men to execute the St Nazaire raid, however, IMHO the raid on Singapore, Operation Jaywick, surpassed the St Nazaire raid for it's bravery and audacious execution. I hold those men who took part in this raid as some of the bravest I have ever heard about, frankly they all deserved to be awarded a VC. Although perhaps operation Rimau was a step too far and not really necessary considering the position of the war in the far east at the time. FYI Jaywick is a small town on the Suffolk coast where Ivan Lyon and his wife used to go sailing prior to WWII, unfortunately is currently one of the most deprived towns currently in the UK.

Have applied for my Great uncles service records..he was a Scottish Royal Marine that survived the sinking of Repulse,defended the withdrawal thru Malaya with the Plymouth Argylls,then managed to evaded the surrender of Singapore and continued fighting the Japanese from Australia till they surrendered. Was part of the allied Navy crew at the signing of the surrender.

How come the documentary produced and copyrighted by Schindler Entertainment is being claimed by The Queensland Maritime Museum? I am a producer fo this documentary and find it appalling that this can be claimed by The Queensland Maritime museum who had no association with this documentary.

My dad served with Australian special forces response operations and he was a long distance sniper with the Australian special air service regiment in Swanbourne perth Australia

My grandfather John Roberts was a telegraphist in Darwin post office during the second world war at bombing of Darwin 19th February 1942

My uncle Bernard kilgarriff served with 2/16 Australian infantry battalion at wewak and gona and balikakpan nthern shore Papua new Guinea 1942

When one thinks that ship building in Australia was a major industry with significant ship yards in most cities of Australia. But Diamantina and other frigates similar to her were built at Walkers Shipyard in Maryborough, Queensland. That industry along with many others sadly disappeared from this country.

My wife's father was on one of those ships and died of a brain tumour as did many of his mates who went on to develop kidney cancer, etc.

My father was a member of Z - working the back-end onshore. Initially promoted to Captain in artillery, then seconded across to Z intel as the unit was being formed. His service covered Malaya, Singapore and the Philippines, along with Z training on Fraser Island and in Canungra in Queensland. A lot of great stories, and a few group holiday trips around Pittwater in the late 1960s. Despite my being quite young, I have great memories of meeting a few of the Jaywick crew on those dat trips. (I loved those!) Thanks.

I was going to kiribati as well with my family to visit my other family in kiribati and not only that to celebrate my oldest sister 21st birthday which is next year but we can't because of the close border in Brisbane. We were thinking to go next year somewhere January or December this year.

Ah the memories, I was on the Oxley on the way down and back. Outside the dock were the two last ships that is served on when I was in the RAN. When we did inspect the hull after returning to Rozelle Bay the state of the hull revealed just how bad it was, She had not been docked since 1983 at Cockatoo island in the Sutherland Dock.
