Great podcast, what always makes laugh is beginner and others getting all tribal with camera brands. If camera companies were aiming everything at the professional they wouldn't sell many,for my business I have to justify every piece of gear, if it gets the job done it stays in the bag. But hobby photographers tend to be more seduced by the latest and greatest. Go out and buy a Canon 5D mark ii or Nikon D700 and a couple of primes and go out and practice.

I started taking my photography seriously at 40 and waited another 4 years to get out there and shoot for clients. I wanted to be a music photographer, but then again so do a million other photographers ! I did it for a while and then out of the blue I started doing realestate, completely different and that's where I landed. I will say that I had to diversify and also learn to become a videographer and offer drone services. You can't just be a photographer anymore, lots of clients are looking for the bells and whistles and that's expensive for the photographers. People say it's not about the gear, but it kind of is, when people start to trust you and rely on your services. I love your channel and your wisdom, it's refreshing to hear,I have passed on your book to a young photographer starting out, and ended up buying another copy !

I am not a professional photographer, but I am a designer. The number of portfolios that i have received for jobs... i reverse image check and found the work on other peoples pages is crazy! Like what did they think would happen? Now, with students still in school, you will often see them use photos found online. I have no issue with this, and if they get to the interview process i tell them that they need to credit the photographer and they cannot use the photos / artwork as stand alones in the spread, and see if they understand that you cannot do that in a professional setting. usually, if they were students of a credible university they have already done this or already know, understand I know talent has little to nothing to do with attending a 'good school', but you are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT in saying if you are entering an industry you have to know the basic laws (and what baffles me is how much of this is common sense). story of how i was screwed by someone using my work. this goes way way back to when i was applying to schools. I had a pretty strong portfolio and had to travel about 8 hours to do an in person interview. they looked at my work and seemed impressed until they got to my photography pages (all black and white done in my high school lab). One photo, the largest of the set, was an image of tire tracks on snow. The one instructor nudge his coworker (who was basically there to just give the stern silent intimidating stares). they started asking me questions about that one piece. me thinking "oh these guys must really like this cliché representation of the north" ... I stated where it was taken, the camera I had (an old made in the USSR SLR that my father owned) and you know stuff like that. they just nodded and sent me off on my way. i was speaking with other students and the senior student helping with the admitting and everyone seemed to say that they were looking for designers that didnt just have drawing skills, but photographic and video skills. I thought WOW GREAT ... they seemed quite interested in my photography. Fast forward, I am at a friends place for a going away party for his sister. He tells me that he applied to the same school and i say cool hopefully we both get in. he offered to show me his portfolio ... all his anime art (not judging but that was the thing at the time for some) and then ... the photographs. now, him and i were often lab partners. and i had GIFTED him several prints at the end of the term ... and you guessed it 'tire tracks on snow' was one of them. I know i had written on the BACK OF THE PHOTO ... something like "best of luck, loved having you as a lab partner and taxi driver and my name" OF COURSE, he mounted this photo. and when i question him... and said I ALSO SHOWED THIS ... THIS GUY... THIS IDIOT says "oh well i guess we kinda screwed each other then" i was livid! i said "no you screwed me... this isn't your work" and he didn't give three shits. As I have now worked in the industry for as long as I have ... I see that the people who don't really have the passion for it are the ones that do the copying and think nothing of it. They usually dont even attend industry events or even get newsletters. but sadly for some of them the delusion gets them jobs. and it is so frustrating and leaves people like myself who work hard, have the capabilities constantly questioning their own stills and living in imposter syndrome jail. sadly with the uptake in certain technologies ... more and more it seems people do not care. and to have an industry full of professionals who have just dropped the ball on the ethics is disheartening.
@Khandiephotography23 күн бұрын
Gosh thats awful!!! I am so sorry. Imposter syndrome is rife in the creative fields and I daresay a lot has to do with the value our work is precieved to have by others, especially when it is stolen.

You're completely right - and I think it all stems from a mindset put in place years and years ago with the advent of Google Images and the distribution of free music through Napster, Limewire etc. It's the idea that "copyright" is the thing of big bad corporations and people are entitled to free access to whatever they want. Erm... No. It's the artists that ultimately suffers. Before I decided to make photography my bread and butter, I used to be a web developer. The amount of times I'd have clients giving me images they pulled off Google. "Use that".... "erm... I can't". Zero understanding or education. Even my professional indemnity insurance had a paragraph that said it would protect me if a 3rd party was stupid enough to use unauthorised images.. so it's a known issue. However, I'm shocked that other photographers would pass images off as their own though. Authenticity is everything in this biz, so it makes zero sense to me. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night. Keep up the great videos. Go get a hot toddy for that throat :)

Awesome video - totally hits the nail on the head. I think one step up from working for free (but just as bad) is when you get asked for a shoot and the person says their budget is like £100. Then in the next breath they show you a mood board they’ve created showing what they want - and it’s got shoots for mainstream products that probably had a six+ figure shoot budget. Yeah, sure.. I’ll replicate that.. As for charities - yep, used to do design work for a couple (paid) - they have massive budgets. Fundraisers and the management teams usually give themselves pretty tasty salaries as well as other perks - so defo never work for free.

@meatbyproducts4 ай бұрын
If I am just practicing and not making money off the photos I see no worries about it. But if I do plan to make money I will ask them for their permission and some contact info. IF I do make money off of it, I then contact them to pay them a royalty. Sharing people at their worst can be a good thing, be it for someone that might be traveling down a similar path or for the one photographed as a way for them to change their path. Having done work with homeless in the Seattle area for years, almost everyone from Vancouver BC to at least San Francisco are there by choice. They have traveled here to get cheap drugs, free money, and okay weather (not too hot or cold but damp). The few that end up homeless and not on drugs are there for a very short time and there are tons of resources to help them out. I stopped working with the homeless after getting sandwiches thrown at me and telling me to F off and give them cash. That wasn't even the first time that happened. If you want to take photos and show the worst that a society with no issues can devolve to, then go for it. I have traveled the world and been to many nations where our homeless have it better than most citizens have it. Most of our homeless are there by choice not by accident. A few of the homeless I took photos of got help after I printed them out and shared the picture with them. One hunted me down and showed me he got clean and is working and doing well, and keeps the photo frames in his living room to not only remember what bad choices got him, but to show new friends that you to are just a couple bad choices away from being like he was. For context I have spent most of my professional life covering war and protests. So, homeless in the western world are nothing in comparison. When you see suffering thrust upon others and it will change you're outlook on things like taking a photo of the homeless. But if you are a street photographer or a wedding photographer, I get why you're soft and think it could be wrong.
@Khandiephotography4 ай бұрын
I would be interested in seeing this work of wars and protests as I have done similar. Always nice to meet a fellow photographer doing it. As for the softness, I don't think it's a softness, some people's moral and ethically compass is different to others.
@meatbyproducts4 ай бұрын
@Khandiephotography when I say softness it is just the opposite of being hardened by harsh environments. Like people in the UK having a heatwave this year at 75-80 degrees F when that is a nice day in the summer, most places in North America. My work is spread out over many outlets in many nations. I need to put together a digital portfolio of that stuff.

You can take the Sontag stance, that everything photographed is automatically an interpretation of a likeness, not really the thing itself, but don't over-intellectualize the whole thing. It is a Picture. That's it. If you need a photograph of a homeless person, you go find one. Hopefully, you have that person's permission to make such an image. The problem with this type of story is it takes an INORDINATE amount of time to sit down and connect with people/persons who are perhaps "homeless" or some variation thereof. But, if you can do that, you may have something worth sharing. I had a professor who used to give as one of the rules for his photo class: "NO SLEEPING HOMELESS PEOPLE". Yeah.

I was recently in Vancouver, and I was walking through a spot where there were hundreds of homeless folks on a short stretch of road. What I saw was jarring, so I put the camera away. They are all human beings and deserve dignity. So, to me, photographing those who are homeless -- off limits.
@Khandiephotography4 ай бұрын
I think the lines we wont cross are deeply personal to use. I do understand a newscrew filming as they add context and such. A photo is a photo to make our own assumptions from. There is not additional information to accompany it. I do see however why some may wish to still photograph. Its certainly an interesting debate to have. Thank you so much for commenting.

Q. Is it wrong to give homeless people money?… Is it wrong to ignore people begging?… Is it wrong to ignore that homeless people exist right in front of you?… If you are documenting your environment, is it wrong to then ignore them by not photographing them, and photographing everyone else? Ditto for Children?… Ditto for the elderly?… Ditto for candid shots of people minding their own business or just out shopping? Q. Is it wrong to photography any of these, or is it more wrong to publish?… Does this extend to video or is it just photography that is wrong? For me, as a street documenter it is only wrong, if you tell yourself it is wrong. There are other genres of photography that I would not do, so I don't do them, but I wouldn't attempt to stop those who are doing it, so long as it is not breaking the law. We are not all going to agree on this, and we all have our red lines, but to me that is a good thing not bad.
@Khandiephotography4 ай бұрын
I dont think there is anything wrong with gifting money. You cant put stipulations on a gift. So whether they use it for food or other reasons, it is not longer a gift if people say you cant use it for xy and z. Given the harsh reality of some of their lives, I hate to say it but if something eases their life even if momentarily, I cant say I am totally (i saw with caution) against them using it for other purposes. I see people who have nice homes and jobs buying similar stuff and its all just 'cool'. I dont see someone out shopping the same as someone living on the street. That is their only option. That is their existance so perhaps its a different subject matter that isnt on the same level as others. It is up to you to justify ethically how/where you draw the line (provided you arent doing it illegally) and be prepared that not all with agree and have strong opinions on it. Its a great debate to be having and I hugely appreciate the comment.
@lifetimesofamultiplemediam10034 ай бұрын
@@Khandiephotography Not all people living on the street, are actually living on the street, some actually choose to be there. There's this one guy where I live who I often talk to, who is not homeless at all. He told me he comes out because he can make money just sitting there, so that's what he does. I don't think there's anything wrong with people giving them money, but there are lots of people who do think it's wrong. My point is, each to there own. Yes it's up to me to justify ethically what I do or don't do with my photography, just like the next person who photographs nudes with a feather coming out their rear end. It's not something I would do, but each to their own, and thank god we don't live in a nanny state. It's an age-old debate, but I doubt it will change many minds.
