From what I heard, the engines were injected by a dosage of certain chemicals that cause them to mutate when affected by radiation. And from Tidmouth Thunderbolt, that explosion at Suddery was actually a setup by P.T. Boomer to scrap all the engines on Sodor to get his revenge on Sir Topham Hatt.
