We rode southbound in November. Few tourists actually. Also, southbound puts you on the sea side at turnouts , so didn’t need to cross the road to get to the views.

Hello from Maine! Love your rig! We have a 1991 Toyota motorhome same layout. We have 5 kids and use it as our family mobile, and business vehicle, I am a clock and watch maker and we service our home state, it is a very comfortable way to explore with the kids, home is never far away. Like any classic It requires dedication and special attention it detail to maintaining your rig. Its a sailboat for the land, a real prairie schooner, and a treat when you see them out on the road❤

I'm planning on a bike tour of the pacific coast next July from Seattle to LA. I'll be taking amtrak up to Seattle but was wondering about the bike. I'll be removing my pannier bags but was wondering if I have to unload all the bags strapped to the bike as they won't fall off the bike and the wt of the bike with those bags will be less then 50lbs.
@brittanywittig11 ай бұрын
Hi Steve! When we took our bikes on Amtrak we had to remove all of our panniers, but we left our handlebar bags attached. Hope this helps! :)
@stevemullin119511 ай бұрын
@@brittanywittig thanks for the info. What bus service did you use to go from Portland to Astoria? Don't know of any bus that will take a bike unless it's boxed up.
@stevemullin119511 ай бұрын
@brittanywittig what about bags strapped to the front forks...would amtrak require them to be removed...they are 5L in size.
@brittanywittig11 ай бұрын
So when we booked with Amtrak we booked all the way to Astoria and part of that included a bus ride (the train stopped in Portland). They put our bikes unboxed in the bus luggage area. As far as front bags we did remove ours, but I cannot say for sure if we had to. Probably a good idea to check with Amtrak directly on that.

This author has put in the work to build this much needed resource. She deserves the support of the cycling and hiking community. The e-book is a bargain for the time taken to research it. I just ordered it and encourage you to order it as well.

Yep’ better be comfortable riding on a 1 foot wide piece of road Otherwise a lot of the trip will be stressful and no fun at all. Also, using a bikepacking setup is nimble, stable and much narrower than panniers.

Hi there! Thanks for making this video - as you say, there isn’t much information online with regards to hiker-biker campsites, and the info you provided is very useful. I’m planning to ride the Trans America Trail this summer, and I’m starting in Portland and cycling around the coast to Florence before heading east, so I’ll be using some of the campsite that you mention. I have one question - I’ve been planning my route and looking online at campsites along the TaT, and it seems that privately run campsites charge around $60 per night, whereas the campsites on State Parks charge around $30 - does that sound about right? I’m in the UK, and campsites here charge around the equivalent of $15 to $20, so I’m trying to work out how much I need to budget for during my trip. Thanks in advance! Robert (London, UK)
@therollingpack7922 Жыл бұрын
Hi Robert! Thanks for watching! Yes, private campgrounds in the USA get progressively more expensive as you head East (in my experience). And that sounds about right for state parks as well. Enjoy the TaT!!! :)

Nice summary of the gear you carried for this trip, the lock suggestion was a gem and one I haven’t seen in other gear videos, also the whistle to aid with on the road communication (another I haven’t seen mentioned); thanks and good job!

It is excellent that it is made aware to others that there are these hiker-biker camps along the Pacific coast bicycle route. I did the full length of the Pacific coast route. I think I used state parks only three times. That was because whenever I came to them it was too early in the day to stop. By the time I got my daily mileage achieved, I was not anywhere near a state park or a Hiker Biker site.

Being flexible along the Oregon Coast is made that much easier by those incredible hiker/biker sites that don't require reservations. I just love that about the Oregon Coast. I've ridden that route 3 times now, the last one being just a week or two behind you guys last summer. The traffic is always a problem in summer, and even in late summer it doesn't lighten up much. A complicating factor last summer was we Oregonians had quite a bit of smoke from wildfires, as well as a lot of very hot (100+) weather, and both of those things drive people to the coast in droves. Last summer was especially crazy. But, wow, it's hard to beat the beauty! The entire route is spectacular!

Did you take the ferry or cycle over the Astoria bridge? What about cannon . I’ll have to find alternate routes around them. 😂 I know the ferry is available for the Astoria . I’ll order my maps soon. And thanks for the videos 👍

@@justineverritt8029 We actually started right after the Astoria bridge so we wouldn't have to cross it. We met many cyclists who cycled across it, and a few did say it was pretty unpleasant to cycle. We walked several bridges on our way south. In fact, we walked all of the really big ones that had sidewalks for pedestrians. Unfortunately, I don't remember the bridge at Cannon specifically.

When we were on the road full time we used a mix of camping strategies: casino camping (most casinos let you park overnight), BLM/USFS land, and state/county park campgrounds.

Would love to see where you store the portable propane tank, and all the other outside accessories you have for the mini motorhome, ie: foldable table, rugs, solar panels etc. Since this is a smaller rv, that would be a good video and one I haven't seen at all.
@therollingpack79223 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion, and great question! The extra propane tank gets stored in the shower stall while we drive, and then when we use the shower we set it outside. The solar panel and folding table we store flat on the overhead bed while we drive. The folding mat fits behind the driver’s seat once it’s folded up.
