Thank for your research and posting. So close to the LA 28 Olympics this is not good for those young athletes that are hoping to attend. For the past 40yrs.we have been on a roller coaster ride with this Federation.

Very interesting summary. The way USATH has been run for the past decade has been nothing more than an absolute farce. It is deeply embarrassing and profoundly insulting to all the people who, on a daily basis, work incredibly hard to make handball live at the local level and get zero support from USATH. I am not sure how an organization with a total budget of less than 250k per year gets into a level of drama that compares to that of "Succession".

What Mr Frede is saying at 34:49 ist entirely right, I think. World Handball (or the IHF) should be keen on growing Handball in the US, especially leading up to the LA olympics. I think that's why the US national teams have gotten their wildcards for the 2025 and 2027 world championsships. Broadcasting/streaming foreign handball events in the US might be another way to grow the sport. The NFL initially grew in germany thanks to a couple of passionate TV-hosts, engaging with and buidling an audience during the airing of the games. Now the NFL (and the hosts) have a cult follwing. Great interview, thank you! :)

While attending a European Handball Manager's Course in Germany I watched an NFL playoff game on German TV. I couldn't understand a word, but I could tell they were passionate commentators including the studio hosts analyzing the game during the commercial breaks. And, all of this in the very early morning in Germany!

Are there any handball leagues in the United States?

There is the one in the Northeast: www.northeasthandball.com/ And, a collegiate league with a division in Ohio and another division in Virginia/Maryland, North Carolina

Appreciate the shout on the shootout defense, John ❤ In response to some of the inquires 1. Beach Handball is a best of three sets match, informally “half” for the first two 10-minute sets is common. I haven’t heard people refer to the sets as “games” as much as I’ve heard people refer to the whole match as a beach handball game. 2. “The greatest beach handball game ever” was the 2021 U17 European Championship final between Spain and Sweden, and the aforementioned superman was Oscar Johansson who made interceptions against Spain’s 9th and 11 shooters in what was ultimately a 22 person shootout Sweden won. 3. At Canary Islands in 2021 we won the first set of our last game in the tournament 32-30 against Germany, who finished 4th in the men’s competition in China, not Poland but we did win a pre-tourney friendly with Poland. Nonetheless twas a great time having you, Dale, and Mikey with us there, JD!

Team Handball Documentary would be so cheap to make. This would build the USA Team Handball easily.
@TeamHandballNews8 ай бұрын
Cheap is a relative term, of course. Even a cheap production would have a lot of costs associated with it. That said reality shows are cheaper than scripted television which is part of the reason we're seeing more of that content produced.

The City teams should stay in their city they live in. Like Denver Wolves, you should be living in Denver.
@TeamHandballNews8 ай бұрын
In a perfect world that could be a strictly followed rule, but clubs sometimes needing to to fill rosters and athletes sometimes not living anywhere near a club some expceptions would make sense.

As a former NAIA and DIII athlete, I think you could find some "blue chip" handball players amoungst the DII, DIII and NAIA athletes, but as you said, it is a numbers games and takes lots of time and money to find/recruit these athletes to get them to try handball. Great discussion

That's great... and, that's how it should work in most cases: Athletes practicing and playing regularly with a nearby club team... instead of living nowhere near the team they play for and just showing up to compete at a couple of weekend tournaents.

It is alway fun to cheer for the underdogs like Faroe Islands. People see them as coming out of nowhere but they obviously have skill. Hopefully the US men can go a run at the World Championships and help the grow the sport here.
@bobohobobobobobg Жыл бұрын
Nothing will happen until you do the longterm boring work in the clubs. The US is so focused on a quick fix to succces and it leads to nothing. Always trying to transition adult athletes into handball players and scouting semi pro Europeans with an American grandma. Stop wasting your energy on failed basketball players and foreign players who couldnt make their own national team. You need to develop your own before you can see any long lasting success. Look where the quick fixes and shortsighted/naive mentality has taken US handball... It would be nowhere without the help of European players and a whole lot of support from the IHF. The US has so many privileges and has the IHF giving them wildcards left and right. If I was Canadian/Mexican/Cuban/Puerto Rican I would be extremely frustrated to see such a nation get all the help in the world and still fumble, while other countries are doing the legit grassroots work without the special treatment of the USA.

I remember we had the Olympic Festival in St. Louis in 1992 and I went to the all the handball games. I was surprised to learn some of the women who participated had not played handball previously. Like you mentioned, they were recruited from other sports. This has been an issue for a long time.
@TeamHandballNews Жыл бұрын
It was actually 1994 and it was my last festival so you saw me play. Essentially my final, final swan song. Totally confirmed for me that 96 Atlanta was going to be a real stretch. Depending on the year the Festivals were either light or heavy on new talent. And, with fewer Women's clubs the number of newbies on the women's side was always somewhat higher than with with women.
