No bad mic there, but the Schoeps brings out the harmonics of the guitar more, more musical.

What this shootout demonstrates to me is that the guitarist, room, and guitar, mic placement play a huge, huge role in the end sound. Each microphone is going to have its sweet spot for any given guitarist, guitar, and room and needs to be dialed in to optimal performance. Most importantly this guitarists rendition of CAN'T FIND MY WAY HOME is stellar on almost any of the microphones.I can guarantee you that with a blind test no body would be able to tell the difference. On the other hand we would all be able to tell the difference if there was a change in guitarists (most important variable). Again, excellent rendition of this beautiful song. If a person is running a studio with paying customers there needs to be an assortment of choices that will cater to giving the artist creative choices. In a home or project whatever mic one can afford with attention to detail of placement, guitar, guitarist, and room will get you 99.99 percent of the way to "as good as it gets." Expensive mics are more consistently without flaws that can annoy a musician or producer. On the other hand there are some really cheap mics that are awesome. I found Milab just didn't shine as much as the others. But this could be due to a multitude of variables that have nothing to do with the innate quality of this mic. The worse performing mic in my locker is the Neumann 184. The most consistent small diaphragm I own is the C451. My favorite condenser mic is a U89 (the diaphragm is in between a 184 and a M149. I own some pretty high end condenser and ribbon mics and find that I tend to grab the C451 often for acoustic guitar. Further, if it gets mistreated I am not going to get anxious. Nothing kills a performance than an engineer or producer being uptight over a piece of equipment. Again, the performance is the most important variable.

Well said. Albert remained positioned while each mic placed in its best location. None would or should be placed pointed to1 point source. A larger space is possible however in most sessions here the guitarist ends up in the booth. At 2’-3’ point taken

This is a really hard test to do close miked as even half an inch difference will affect the sound probably even more than the difference between mic choice. I would do another test backed off at least 3 feet so the mic position is not as affected.

Hi guys! Great to see that you are including a Milab in the shootout, but the CM-22 is a custom model made for speech and was never intended for high-end studio use. If you contact our distributor in Melbourne, Factory Sound, I'm sure they can set you up with a VM-44 which will be a much better fit. /Mattias

Cheers....yep am aware that the milab is designed for speech...had a few of em so put it in the shootout...left out the rode nt5
@noelelmowy2 жыл бұрын
As Albert noted I am aware of the intended design/usage of these Milab series. INRoK Studios has 12 in great condition and they are my choir workhorse mic BUT shine as rock drum overheads in a wide spaced pair and brilliant when mic on snare for “brushes style”.
