Still struggling with spillage or carbon dioxide pouring into the room when opening the stove to put more wood on the fire. This if after every burn when the fluid is nice and hot. I have a twin wall flue with 3 bends. External intake. MI fire Grisedale. 5kw stove. I open the door very slowly but always got some spillage forcing me to open up doors. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Thank you, very informative. I'm moving house this year and I'll be getting my first stove. I'd like it to burn while I'm at work. Would a log burner be able to burn for 8 hrs?😊
@Walker-xl5zlАй бұрын
I've got a charnwood Arc5, with a twin wall system, and on cold mornings like today, I open the door, and I can feel cold air flowing down into the log burner. I do use a blowtorch to get some warm air up the flu, which does eventually work, but it's not ideal if my wife wants to start a fire! I've thought about putting an electric flu fan below the cowl to get a draw before lighting. It's a real shame, as it's a lovely burner once it gets the draw going! Thanks for your hints and tips, you're very helpful.

My Flavel Arundel had a tendency to leak smoke into the room despite having a 2 story chimney (circa 25 feet) and a chimney liner. I have managed to overcome this by setting the fire so it's very full of dry logs and burning it from the top down. I leave the door slightly open at first and this gets some heat into the chimney, the fire will last for 3-4 hours easily and I won't refuel it until we are down to a bed of glowing embers....I'm tempted to take a strip of the edge of the throat plate to open up the smoke inlet area......

I use the top down method . A couple of logs at the bottom with a firelighter on top. Then put kindling on top of that, stacked as high as possible in a jenga style with gaps .this allows air to get around the fuel to get you going( Kindling is your best friend to warm the flue quickly) The first thing to learn is, a chimney will not pull till it is warm. Once it is warm most problems will be solved. Make sure you open all the vents ,usually one on a woodburner both on a multifuel .To get extra air to start the fire really quickly, crack the door slightly open For the first 5 minutes or so after lighting ,your kindling will be roaring away in no time. Then add another log or 2 whatever will fit in your stove after another few minutes you should have the fire blasting away now shut the door and leave with the vents open till you are up to temperature. If you have a stove thermometer (highly recommended) try not to let the dial get past the 2nd line on the dial. This is called overfiring your stove and can damage it. If you are using a multifuel stove shut the primary air control off this is usually the bottom one or the one on the right hand side (check your handbook) . You shouldnt really need it any more. The other control is the secondry air control which will now become your main control. Turn that down a little at a time. Waiting about 5 seconds at a time to allow the air in the box to burn off . Depending on the quality of the stove you have bought this should slow the burn down to a tick over setting. Then add a log at a time usually after about an hour when the flame has gone to a glow. To add a log, good practice is to crack open the door let the air in the stove equalise with the room before very slowly opening the door and add a log bark side down . Open the secondry air vent for about 20 to 30 seconds to get the log going and then turn the dial back down to the tick over setting. For a woodburner you generally have 1 control this is all you need and works exactly the same way. If you are burning wood. Permission not to clean too often . Wood likes to burn on a bed of ash of maybe 1/2 to 1in is perfect and achieves better combustion. For some extreme weather conditions sometimes this is not enough. I know this isnt what you want to hear but its true. I have invested, and I suggest you do ,in a blow torch ,which you can switch on and point at the baffle ,this will help to warm the flue much quicker and rather than panic when you have your room filling with smoke this helps puts you back in control. The 2nd thing to massively help is to crack open a door or a window in the room to get extra ventillation . Once you are going you will be fine. If all this fails then we need to look at the chimney maybe an anti downdraught cowl or if you want to go full belt and braces a flue cube . Expensive, about 3 to 400 pounds plus fitting but they guarantee to work. They have rescued every person I have dealt with who has reached this very unlucky stage. I hope this helps..

Also, fires will be slower in high pressure weather conditions. I agree with getting chimney as warm and as soon as possible. A couple of newspaper sheets - loose and not screwed up - usually does the job.
@angelahenson34262 ай бұрын
Thanks very much. I knew that it’s harder with a twin wall flue but I didn’t realise that our actual eco stove (Parkray Aspect) was contributing to the problem too! I’ve been burning top down but some days that fails even though it’s not that cold outside.

It's a con. The fan will spin typically from 50 or 60 degrees celsius in most models so it spinning proves nothing. A warming heat? Salespeak for 'warm' i.e. not hot. Come on, if around 3kw which is the usual claim then should be comparable to an electric bar heater or maybe 2 panels of e.g. a 4.2kw 3 panel butane gas heater - both of which do get significantly hot. It is in reality nothing like this. Maybe half or a third of the heat claimed. Usually recommended not as a primary heater but only to complement a real heating system in proper cold weather e.g. boiler/radiators - so what's the point of it as you'd be paying to run both? If you are fooled by the questionable reviews and sellers sales talk that it puts out significant heat, you buy one and try it then typically they won't take a return. No smoke, little heat, overpriced and they smell from the fuel. Don't be fooled.

@@karlbroberg1652 Then the Hampton 4 would be best in that case. The real world difference in efficiency will not really be noticeable. When stoves drop below 5kw, the efficiency naturally drops slightly, so it is hard to get a stove this size much higher efficiency wise. All the best

Oh dear I dunno what to do now, my stove is being fitted next month, originally I picked just wood burning stove, but then thought it would be better to have the option for wood and smokeless coal, as occasionally I might use a bag of coal, but the majority would be wood, so I've told the company I've changed my mind and I've gone for a multifuel, no I'm thinking I should have just stuck with the wood,
