They play very beautiful. I think 'solo tuning scordatura' is not necessary in all solo works for double bass, like this.

This is slightly humorous: the one on the left looks as if he's stalking the one on the right and about to pounce at any moment! Having said that ... this music is quite amazing and very unusual. Thank you for posting.

you’re right of course.Extreme virtuosity like Edgar Meyers or Gary Karr is hard to acheive. I’ve heard Ron Carter play out of tune, ditto Paul Chambers, but these guys have a great blend and approach.

Anki ThreeSidedTriangle is right. I play the cello. This is a double bass. There are four string instruments. Sorted by size (descending) there are: Double bass, Cello, Viola, Violin.

Amazing job! However, why? More idiomatic compositions are needed. Valentine is the best piece I've heard for bass violin. We need more compositions, not in the same vein as Valentine, per-say, but more out of the box philosophy.

It depends. It’s definitely hard to pull off on the double bass, but it can be done. I love Joseph and Hal, but honestly the higher register intonation in this one is… a bit iffy, which is pretty normal for 99.9% of even very good bassists and part of what I expect you’re objecting to. But it is possible to do better. The best example for me is Mikyung Sung, for instance playing Kol Nidrei, Meditation from Thais, Salut d’Amour, The Swan, Moses Fantasy, Czardas (from 2018), Liebeslied, Arpeggione sonata, Franck Violin Sonata, cello sonatas by Mendelssohn and Rachmaninoff, or, perhaps most comparable to this performance, her quartet’s versions of Spring from the Four Seasons and Bach’s Air on the G string. Even Hal has a really beautiful quartet playing an arrangement of Urlucht which is fantastic, posted on the channels of Sharif Ibrahim and Jacob Warren. It sounds quite a bit better than this particular video IMO.

I've listened to 2:30 twice. Ther is nothing wrong with the intonation. I think you misread what the expression meant. I hear some sketchy intonation in the 2nd movement. Intonation on the contrabass is always a challenge , especially up there in thumb position. These guys are are playing beautifully.
