solo like a horn player is exactly correct. John Patitucci is another great tub soloist. Learn the heads to standards.

Christian is telling the truth here. When I was 18 at Music school I went to the jazz jam in the hip part of town recommended by my Bass teacher Tom Hazlit. He said bring your fake book and stand you'll do great. So there I go walking into the classical joint jazz bar in gas town all confident ready to prove my greenhorn self with the big boys. Well I was greeted by the host and was noticed by everyone due to my age etc and was told no fake book if you know the tunes you play if you dont know one you get off the stage and someone else goes up. They took it easy on me for 2 tunes and then they said ok lets do joy spring well that was it I did the walk off the stage of shame. Humbled and grateful of a lesson learned.

Gotta say, the sound is so much better when he’s using the Nadine mic than when he’s using the piezo.

5:05: this is the rationale for a “full stack” in any setting. Unlike heavy rock, here it’s not about high volume. It’s about hearing yourself. Get your amp’s speaker up by your ears! Btw, in rock this can help you play at a lower overall volume.

"The peanut gallery" that is perfect.. ....I know those types.... here they wear leather berets and other weird shit.... bob their heads with errrrr jazz faces and talk in shitty beat poetry.... I squirm just thinking about those clowns. I love Christian's stories... I could listen for hours.

I do think the it's the player, the instrument, the pick up, the amp, the speaker and then the soundman. This legend would sound good good on an a complete budget set up in fairness though .

Ron has my ultimate respect. He's one of the reasons why I picked up bass guitar in the first place. When I heard those songs by A Tribe Called Quest on their album entitled The Low End Thoery I was freaking so blown out of the water,

The mic placement in this interview possibly speaks to who the interviewer is focusing on - good mic next to interviewer, can hear him clearly; Ron Carter - no mic, sounds like he's speaking through a potato.

I’m an old working pro. I spent a good part of my life in cover bands playing in bars 9:00-1:30, six days a week. However, on Sunday because I wanted to play jazz, I would head on up (I was in the OC) to LA to sit in with some jazz groups. I made a habit of sitting in on Sundays at Vina’s, a small club in LA. Vina had their own Hammond B-3 and drum set on stage and on one Sunday, the organist was trying to get rid of this sax player who kept playing blues licks over every single jazz tune, so he started playing Giant Steps. This is many years ago and I had never played the Coltrane tune…..and obviously, neither had the sax player and when the sax player started playing his blues licks, the organist moved the tune up a half-step. The saxophonist turned, gave the organist a nasty look and stopped playing. Then the organist looked at me like it’s my turn to blow…..and at that time I hadn’t played one note yet and shook my head “no” no solo for me. That was my introduction to Giant Steps.

I’ve seen George doing the “calling out random chords” thing as recently as a month or two ago, at Small’s - but with his regular band, not jammers.

I don't care how famous Ron Carter is --- I don't like the sound of his strings. There is no way nylon/steel bass strings for jazz bass sounds anywhere near as rich, deep, resonant, full and warm as classic gut strings that all the greatest jazz bass players have used since Day One.

I wish all players would knock off the hate towards learning theory especially with that attitude of "It hinders you from creativity" . You learn the rules to break them, you learn foundation in order to structure, and you practice it all so much so that you don't have to think about any of it anymore.
