Used is always better than new,,no car payment every month, minimal maintenance if you buy a decen car, insurance is cheap if a major problem pops up just go find another,,im financially secure just not paying for car payments for the last 40 years,,put that car payment into investments and have anything u want just from interest slone

I still have my 07 Taurus I bought new. I replaced the alternator twice, the starter twice, fuel pump once, valve covers once. AC still works great. No reason to buy a new car. Paint still looks good too. I do most of the work myself, unless it requires taking the engine apart then I take it to my mechanic.

Spot! We meet again! This was linked in r/documentaries on Reddit. Back in the day, my older brother and a friend took the Seaflite (that's how long ago it was) to the Big Island to supposedly get jobs picking coffee. Well, the place wouldn't hire haoles so my brother was SOL. He had to pick beans as an independent for a week or two to make the money to take the Seaflite back to Oahu. We were not "fresh off the boat" all but my older sister had ages in the single digits when we moved to Hawaii but that's how it was. Maybe how it still is, not sure.

Small world Alex! A lot of the pickers there were on temporary work visas but some were from the mainland and just out in Hawaii for the season. Great story you have there. I am sure if you wanted to try your hand at picking coffee they would hire you.

@@SpotGoesHawaii I just turned 62 and have zero interest in picking coffee for $3 an hour or whatever it works out to. When my older brother picked coffee, we were living on the windward side on Oahu, were on welfare, and if we just had browner skin would be considered local. But you know how it is in Hawaii. If I were to return to Hawaii to retire, I'd have social security, plus busking as I've developed fairly decent music skills, plus I'm *really* good at shell picking. But I've realized the mainland has spoiled me. I can walk down the street, go into any store or bank or the post office, and never get hassled. To cops, I'm invisible. I don't fear my neighbors. I have a few habits from growing up in Hawaii and being a young adult there, like my "head on a swivel" skills are very good and I can't kick the habit of, when leaving a store, holding the receipt in my hand so it's visible. In Hawaii, as a "haole", one is presumed to be a thief. To be frank, to be "haole" in Hawaii is to get much of the same treatment a Black person gets on the mainland. And I'm not eager to go back to it. One of my heroes, Louis Armstrong, left New Orleans and he didn't go back. He settled down, when he settled down, in a neighborhood in New York with a lot of artists and musicians etc. where he was treated the same as everyone else. Going back to Hawaii would be a big step backward for me.

24 years ago I bought a 1991 VW Jetta for 1550 bucks. Today that car now has almost 400k miles on it. I kept it going by fixing it myself. Insurance is cheap. Only 43 bucks per month and that's for 300k coverage. About a year ago I started looking for a newer car because I wanted something with airbags and anti-lock brakes. About 6 months ago I bought a 2016 Toyota Yaris with low miles and now I'm planning on selling the old VW. I've had it for such a long time it's kinda become a member of the family, but I think it's time to let it go to someone else. Maybe the new owner will keep it going for another 300k+ miles. I get to keep all the memories I have about that car and I'm looking forward to making new memories with the Toyota. Maybe it'll last even longer than the old VW.

400k is maybe a new record for mileage that i've heard about. I also definitely understand the sentiment of a car becoming one of the family. You get so familiar with all the quirks of an old car you just accept it as normal just like in a relationship with another person.

You are absolutely correct on everything you said, I could not have said it better. I’ve driven beaters since I got out of high school, I’m 67 years old now. Lucky for me my beaters were either a Toyota or a Nissan. Simple and easy to fix. Some beaters were given to me, I bought a beater from a neighbor. I keep an eye out on my family and neighbors cars to see when they get a new car. Luckily I had interest in cars when I was young, that was the thing to do, work at a gas station and work on cars. That knowledge and skills is like gold today. I’ve saved a lot of money in 50 years. Beater cars will require attention because things will go wrong. It helps if you have some DIY skills. Today I much rather drive a newer vehicle, it’s just more comfortable and less maintenance. Everyone should have one beater in their life to know how a car works so you don't get screwed too bad by a mechanic or dealer.

I went to grad school in Hawai’i back in the 80’s and would do this loop at least three times a week when I didn’t have time for longer rides. Usually would catch the descent about sunset and get some awesome views screaming down that hill at speeds approaching 50 mph. So glad I never had a blowout on those skinny tires pumped up to 120 psi at those speeds. Never gave it much thought back then. Thanks for the post.

Well, I have enough income to live in my own country. Difference is that with the same money I can live here as good and I can save money every month. In my country I had a mortgage, here my house is paid for. I live in Thailand, together with my Thai wife. But we don't live for less then 1000$. No need for. But we lead a normal life. No crazy things, but enjoy anyway.

I lived in Thailand for 15 months on a student visa. Got tired of the scams and bullshit. Sometimes you feel like a bug trying not to get stepped on. It was an interesting experience and I am glad that I did it, but Thailand is not my home. My Thai language skills are limited, so yes, becoming more fluent in the language can be very helpful. I read Thai very very slowly ha ha.

Very good advice. I would like to add that if you have a drug problem, please stay away from Southeast Asia. The drug dealers don't play games. The illegal drug laws are harsh with lengthy prison terms and up to a mandatory capital punishment for drug dealers and smugglers. Although I don't exactly know how bad the jail facilities are, I often heard that it makes the U.S. penitentiary system looks like Disneyland in comparison. I've seen several Locked Up Abroad documentaries. The prisons looked nasty as hell. However, if you're a decent and normal person with good intentions, then you will find good educated hard working people who are willing to be your friends. I'm a Vietnamese American, disabled U.S. Army veteran and a retired federal worker. Us Viet Kieu qualifies for a five years renewable visa. We can also apply for permanent residence after six months in the country. We built our retirement villa in 1999 and purchased additional lands in 2007. I'm now 60 but have retired from the federal government's early retirement program since 2021. We will be selling our home in the States and living full time in Vietnam ASAP. Living La Vida Loca, babeee!

If you were a loser barely getting by in your home country, you will be a loser here as well (Thailand, Cambodia, Philippines, Indonesia); if you had mental issues at home, you will have mental issues here; if your only friends are those who work or are customers in the red light district you will have low class friends who are unable to help enhance your quality of life; if you think living in a 25 SqM condo for less than $700 a month is great, just wait a couple months (or weeks) when you feel you have no room to live, accumulate things with no storage space, wish to invite friends over. I have about $5k a month earnings from pension & investments, no rent since I own my 135 SqM condo, low monthly expenses as I don't frequent the entertainment areas, have a daily routine that includes fitness, and all of my friends are locals. Been planning to retire here since 20 years ago, did not do this on a whim.

Nice video. Hit some good points people tend to ignore. In 10 years in Thailand I've met so many people who came over here and failed to stay long term because they didn't get the idea that it's their home now. Not a place to just party recklessly until everything turns to shit. Cheap living doesn't mean turning into a wannabe Dan Bilzerian. It should just mean getting ahead.
