Kinda sad to listen to his stories about the north shore in the 70', five hours to wait for a car to pass by, I can only imagine the lineups, what they looked like back then Fast forward to today and you realise where we're heading... 😢

What a treat to see and hear my surf idol,of my youth - $160 Lightening Bolt board (used) and lastly I use to attend gun shows in SoCal when I was in my teens, and lo and behold I saw Gerry Lopez with bunch of his buddies.. I am 100% sure I was the only person in the entire gun show who even knew who he was.. ah, kicks man. So glad to see him doing so well!

15 years ago I was in Mexico on my bodyboard which I use when the waves get double overhead and this guy comes out on his stand up paddle board mastering these waves. When I got on the beach some guy says to me “Did you know who you were sharing waves with?” It was Jerry Lopez! FYI it was a point break left, big giant slow waves.

After watching a recent documentary, I lost all respect for him. He’s all zen now, but was an arrogant, greedy prick back in his day. He built his career on being greedy, no aloha. The fin to the anus was karma coming home.

Jvlogging has become corporate and creepy. The whole concept now revolves around a fairly small but tight clique of expats in Tokyo who live like aristocrats. I miss the old, more humble and human content. Better it was honest than HD.

Spot! We meet again! This was linked in r/documentaries on Reddit. Back in the day, my older brother and a friend took the Seaflite (that's how long ago it was) to the Big Island to supposedly get jobs picking coffee. Well, the place wouldn't hire haoles so my brother was SOL. He had to pick beans as an independent for a week or two to make the money to take the Seaflite back to Oahu. We were not "fresh off the boat" all but my older sister had ages in the single digits when we moved to Hawaii but that's how it was. Maybe how it still is, not sure.
@SpotGoesHawaii2 ай бұрын
Small world Alex! A lot of the pickers there were on temporary work visas but some were from the mainland and just out in Hawaii for the season. Great story you have there. I am sure if you wanted to try your hand at picking coffee they would hire you.
@alexcarter88072 ай бұрын
@@SpotGoesHawaii I just turned 62 and have zero interest in picking coffee for $3 an hour or whatever it works out to. When my older brother picked coffee, we were living on the windward side on Oahu, were on welfare, and if we just had browner skin would be considered local. But you know how it is in Hawaii. If I were to return to Hawaii to retire, I'd have social security, plus busking as I've developed fairly decent music skills, plus I'm *really* good at shell picking. But I've realized the mainland has spoiled me. I can walk down the street, go into any store or bank or the post office, and never get hassled. To cops, I'm invisible. I don't fear my neighbors. I have a few habits from growing up in Hawaii and being a young adult there, like my "head on a swivel" skills are very good and I can't kick the habit of, when leaving a store, holding the receipt in my hand so it's visible. In Hawaii, as a "haole", one is presumed to be a thief. To be frank, to be "haole" in Hawaii is to get much of the same treatment a Black person gets on the mainland. And I'm not eager to go back to it. One of my heroes, Louis Armstrong, left New Orleans and he didn't go back. He settled down, when he settled down, in a neighborhood in New York with a lot of artists and musicians etc. where he was treated the same as everyone else. Going back to Hawaii would be a big step backward for me.

24 years ago I bought a 1991 VW Jetta for 1550 bucks. Today that car now has almost 400k miles on it. I kept it going by fixing it myself. Insurance is cheap. Only 43 bucks per month and that's for 300k coverage. About a year ago I started looking for a newer car because I wanted something with airbags and anti-lock brakes. About 6 months ago I bought a 2016 Toyota Yaris with low miles and now I'm planning on selling the old VW. I've had it for such a long time it's kinda become a member of the family, but I think it's time to let it go to someone else. Maybe the new owner will keep it going for another 300k+ miles. I get to keep all the memories I have about that car and I'm looking forward to making new memories with the Toyota. Maybe it'll last even longer than the old VW.
@SpotGoesHawaii2 ай бұрын
400k is maybe a new record for mileage that i've heard about. I also definitely understand the sentiment of a car becoming one of the family. You get so familiar with all the quirks of an old car you just accept it as normal just like in a relationship with another person.

You are absolutely correct on everything you said, I could not have said it better. I’ve driven beaters since I got out of high school, I’m 67 years old now. Lucky for me my beaters were either a Toyota or a Nissan. Simple and easy to fix. Some beaters were given to me, I bought a beater from a neighbor. I keep an eye out on my family and neighbors cars to see when they get a new car. Luckily I had interest in cars when I was young, that was the thing to do, work at a gas station and work on cars. That knowledge and skills is like gold today. I’ve saved a lot of money in 50 years. Beater cars will require attention because things will go wrong. It helps if you have some DIY skills. Today I much rather drive a newer vehicle, it’s just more comfortable and less maintenance. Everyone should have one beater in their life to know how a car works so you don't get screwed too bad by a mechanic or dealer.

You’ve got a few years on me but we’ve lived through a lot of similarities in our car ownership timeline. I am about to sell my CRV and get something a little newer and safer.

I went to grad school in Hawai’i back in the 80’s and would do this loop at least three times a week when I didn’t have time for longer rides. Usually would catch the descent about sunset and get some awesome views screaming down that hill at speeds approaching 50 mph. So glad I never had a blowout on those skinny tires pumped up to 120 psi at those speeds. Never gave it much thought back then. Thanks for the post.
